“The fact that there could have been a South Asian woman in the White House … we’re not there yet, but it would have been very nice.
“There’s a great deal of disappointment in that sense,” said Shakeel Syed, executive director of the nonprofit South Asian Network.
She steeped her daughters in all things South Asian, said Harris, who grew up eating South Indian food, like potato curry and masala dosa, and hearing Gopalan speak Tamil.
Like many young and progressive Asian Americans, she said Israel’s war in the Gaza Strip has been an important issue for her.
In the meantime, South Asian voters say they have no choice but to keep pushing.
