New York CNN —If you’ve got money in the market, you might own a little piece of Trump Media — without even knowing it. Trump Media (DJT), the owner of conservative social media platform Truth Social, announced its addition to the Russell family on Monday. As a result, countless retail investors will now own a piece of Trump Media. These include the $14 billion iShares Russell 3000 ETF (IWV) and the $2.5 billion Vanguard Russell 3000 ETF (VTHR). LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman, a vocal critic of former President Donald Trump, believes Trump Media is really worth just $40 million.

And it still remains the case that bitcoin futures are regulated, and spot bitcoin is not," Simeon Hyman, head of the investment strategy group at ProShares, told CNBC. One theory for why the futures ETF has continued to have success is that there are listed options for bitcoin futures products, but not for the spot products, said Aniket Ullal, head of ETF data and analytics at CFRA. The ProShares futures ETF may also be getting helped by increased action in the futures market itself. To be sure, not all bitcoin futures products are going strong. VanEck announced Jan. 17 that it was liquidating its bitcoin futures ETF.

The newly launched bitcoin exchange-traded funds are showing early signs of success, but they have so far fallen short of being the massive boost for crypto some bulls predicted. BTC.CM= YTD mountain Bitcoin has retreated since the launch of the bitcoin ETFs. This fall comes after some crypto investors had cited the ETF launches as a catalyst that could propel bitcoin to $100,000 in 2024. That discount likely attracted arbitrage players who used the ETF launch as an opportunity to close out their trade. Yesterday, all Bitcoin ETFs combined traded $2.2Bn, IBIT traded $340Mn.

Traders work on the floor at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in New York City, U.S., November 17, 2023. And should they, given the many risks that come with such a fast-paced strategy? Bank of Montreal launched the Max SPX 500 4x leveraged ETNs, which will be the highest leveraged exchange traded product in the U.S., according to CFRA. The notes are based on the S&P 500 Total Return Index and will trade under the ticker "XXXX" beginning on Tuesday. AI (Artificial Intelligence) letters and robot hand miniature in this illustration taken, June 23, 2023. The Global X Robotics & Artificial Intelligence ETF (BOTZ.O) received $35.5 million in net inflows in the week ending on Wednesday, its strongest since June earlier this year, according to Lipper data. "Improved inflation data and the likelihood of rate cuts in the second half of 2024 have maintained market optimism throughout November, contributing to investor interest," said Tejas Dessai, AVP, Research Analyst at Global X. So far this year, the Global X fund has gained 27.7% year-to-date, supported by the 233% rally in shares of its top holding Nvidia (NVDA.O), whose graphics processing units (GPUs) dominate the market for AI. The Global X fund, which has total net assets of $2.2 billion, has seen net inflows of $554.8 million so far this year.

The list of top-performing exchange-traded funds since Sept. 19 — the day before the Federal Reserve released new projections that showed fewer rate cuts in 2024 — is dominated by leveraged and leveraged inverse products. The performance and increased interest shows that the inverse funds are doing their jobs, but there are important caveats for investors to know. The universe of inverse and leveraged inverse funds has grown widely, including sector-specific funds and even some single-stock products. Of course, the leveraged inverse funds can suffer massive losses if the market rebounds. Ullal also pointed out that some inverse products are technically exchange traded notes, not ETFs, which can introduce some credit risk in a trade.

By contrast, both funds received their highest monthly net inflows of 2023 in June, gaining $265.5 million and $29.74 million, respectively, according to Lipper data. But AI stocks have suffered along with broader markets in recent weeks, as Treasury yields hovering around 16-year highs dull investors' risk appetite. Retail investor flows into the sector have also cooled as the initial fervor surrounding AI wanes. September saw the lowest net monthly retail flows of $1.96 billion into AI-linked stocks since April, according to Vanda Research. "It is possible this negative sentiment could reverse again in Q4, particularly if large cap tech stocks like Nvidia held in AI-themed tech ETFs continue to show strong earnings growth," CFRA's Ullal added.

The VanEck Office and Commercial REIT ETF fell 4.8% on Thursday after the U.S. Federal Reserve stiffened its hawkish monetary policy stance, slamming the real estate sector and the Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) that invest in them. Real estate stocks have struggled this year as the Fed's rapid rate hikes make financing properties more expensive, curbing demand. ETFs tracking broader REITs such as Schwab US REIT and Vanguard Real Estate Index have fallen 4.4% and 5%, respectively, so far this week, while the S&P 500 real estate index (.5SP60) is on track to post weekly losses of 4.7%. "For the discerning investor, the current situation might just be the contrarian opportunity they've been waiting for," said VanEck in its blog about the ETF. Office REITs like Boston Properties (BXP.N) and Kilroy Realty (KRC.N) are down 10% and 15%, respectively, so far this year.

The dollar index dipped below the 100 level on July 14, marking its lowest level since mid-April 2022. "So there's just a dynamic where the overall access to capital funding improves when there's a weaker dollar in emerging markets, and vice versa. The Swiss bank found that the MSCI Emerging Markets index is trading near a 36% discount to the S & P 500. The three largest are: Vanguard FTSE Emerging Markets ETF , iShares Core MSCI Emerging Markets ETF and iShares MSCI Emerging Markets ETF . Core MSCI is higher by 9.6% in 2023, iShares MSCI Emerging Markets is up 8.2% and Vanguard FTSE Emerging Markets has gained 7.4%.

The quickly expanding world of buffer funds now has an option for investors who want 100% downside protection. The Innovator Equity Defined Protection ETF (TJUL) was introduced on Tuesday, the latest in the firm's defined outcome suite of funds. This one is designed to give investors full downside protection over a two-year period, in exchange for capped upside participation of roughly 16.6%. Money market funds have seen huge inflows this year, suggesting many investors are still reluctant to to take on risky investments. The fund is essentially a three-pronged options strategy, using flex options.

Financials ETFs are getting hit hard by fear that the collapses of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank will ripple throughout the banking system. According to a March 2 summary of the changes from BMO strategist Brian Belski, the biggest names moving to the financials industry are Visa , Mastercard and PayPal . The changes will filter through to many passive sector funds that track indexes, particularly those that use indexes from MSCI and S & P Dow Jones. While the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank has rattled the entire equity market, the payments stocks have held up much better than the financials sector funds. Mastercard, Visa and PayPal all have buy ratings from the majority of Wall Street analysts, according to Refinitiv.
Most investors would say it's a growth stock, because it has the traditional characteristics of a growth stock: earnings are growing. But Microsoft is now being classified as partly a growth stock by Standard & Poors, and partly a value stock. S&P growth and value criteria: It's not that simpleThe S&P rebalances its growth and value indexes every year at the end of December. Growth ETFs in 2023 (year to date)Vanguard Growth (VUG) up 11.30%iShares S&P Growth ETF (IVW) up 5.6%iShares Russell 1000 Growth (IVW) up 9.2%However, these are unusually large discrepancies, Ullal said. But 30 years ago, issues like what is a value stock and what is a growth stock were largely determined by specialized stock pickers who set up mutual funds and hedge funds to attract investors.
The Vanguard Growth ETF (VUG) has blown past one of its closest competitor from iShares, the S & P 500 Growth ETF (IVW) . The Vanguard fund has a total return of 7.96% this year, while the iShares fund has returned just 3.15%, according to FactSet. The Vanguard funds track the growth indexes from CRSP, while iShares S & P 500 follows products from S & P Dow Jones. Since IT has done well this year and energy has not, ETFs tracking S & P indices have underperformed growth ETFs tracking other indices," Ullal wrote. Meanwhile, the iShares S & P fund has more than a 4% combined weighting in ExxonMobil and Chevron .

The iShares MSCI emerging market Asia exchange traded fund is up 11% and the iShares core MSCI emerging markets ETF is up more than 10% since the year began. For Kotler, it's emerging market bonds, where his firm has an overweight rating as opposed to a neutral rating on equities. One other factor that should help emerging market countries outperform in 2023 is the winding down of the strength of the U.S. dollar. Some top emerging market bond funds include the iShares JP Morgan USD Emerging Markets Bond ETF , the Vanguard Emerging Markets Government Bond ETF and the VanEck JP Morgan EM Local Currency Bond ETF. Of course, the downside to large emerging market funds is that they tend to be most heavily weighted to China, as it's the largest emerging market country.
The nascent single-stock ETFs have reached a key period to prove their worth after a slow start for the group in the United States. I know we're in the first inning here, but it has not been a very good start for single-stock ETFs," Aniket said. However, the issuers of the funds — AXS, Direxion and GraniteShares, so far — have stressed that trading volume is a key test for these short-term focused funds. But if investors don't follow the daily trading prescribed for the funds, performance can suffer. What comes next Single-stock funds are already well established in Europe.
