CNN —The Vatican Bank has fired two employees whose recent wedding violates a newly-introduced ban on marriages between staff. The bank said that its policy is designed to prevent conflicts of interest at an institution with only around 100 employees, all of whom work at the same location. Sgro said the couple, who have three children, were told that their employment had been terminated on October 1. The Vatican Bank has a history of financial scandals and in 2013 Pope Francis set up an expert committee to recommend reforms to the economic and administrative structures of the Holy See to combat the problem. He’s the first cardinal to be convicted and sentenced by a Vatican court.

Before he was fired by Pope Francis over another issue, Becciu was one of the most powerful men in the Vatican. The Vatican sold the building last year, taking an estimated loss of about 140 million euros. The others on trial include several Vatican employees and two outside brokers who the Vatican has accused of extortion. He asked the court to confiscate 172 million euros of Mincione's assets and 71 million euros of Torzi's. At the time of Becciu's firing, he was also stripped of what the Vatican then said were his "rights associated with being a cardinal".

REUTERS/Guglielmo Mangiapane/File PhotoVATICAN CITY, Feb 9 (Reuters) - Pope Francis, in a surprise move, on Thursday granted an official private audience to Cardinal Angelo Becciu, the once-powerful Vatican prelate who is on trial for corruption and embezzlement. Becciu is one of 10 defendants at the corruption trial, which revolves around the purchase of a building in London by the Secretariat of State. Pope Francis fired Becciu from another senior clerical post in 2020 for alleged nepotism, an accusation he also denies. This included the right to enter a secret conclave to elect the next pope after Francis's death or resignation. In one of the most recent hearings of the trial, last November, the court heard a secretly recorded telephone call between Becciu and the pope.
Vatican Media/Handout via REUTERS/File PhotoVATICAN CITY, Nov 24 (Reuters) - A court at a Vatican corruption trial on Thursday heard a secretly recorded telephone call between the main defendant, embattled Cardinal Angelo Becciu, and Pope Francis. The money was sent to a company she had set up in Slovenia and she received some in cash, the court has been told. He told the court how he was ordered to make payments he considered unusual. The trial revolves around the purchase of a building in London by the Secretariat of State. The 10 defendants include former Vatican employees and Italian middle men who the prosecution says extorted the Vatican.
Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said on Thursday he had no comment on the lawsuit, which was filed last week with the Vatican prosecutor's office by lawyers for Libero Milone and Ferruccio Panicco. Becciu told Reuters in 2017 that Milone "went against all the rules and was spying on the private lives of his superiors and staff, including me". Milone denies this, saying he just was seeking information he had a right to see as auditor general. The Vatican's prosecutor's office said it had recently re-opened an investigation about events at the time of the sacking in 2017. Becciu's lawyers said Milone had given a "a completely unfounded reconstruction" of events in the legal filing.
Decizie istorică a papei Francisc.
