On Election Day, Representative Barbara Lee, a California Democrat, joined some two dozen Black women outside a polling place in Prince George’s County, Md., to celebrate the rise of Vice President Kamala Harris. The ebullient group included Angela Alsobrooks, who later that day became one of two African American women elected to the U.S. Senate, which has never had more than one Black woman serving at a time. Dawn Moore, the first lady of Maryland, was there too, as was the mayor of Bladensburg, Takisha James, and members of the Town Council, all of whom are Black women. She had brought her grandson to witness history. Instead they left with “tears in our eyes,” she said.

CNN —Republicans flipped the Senate, but Democratic candidates often outran the top of the ticket, winning at least four battleground states that Vice President Kamala Harris lost. Harris lost all seven swing states to President-elect Donald Trump, while her party’s Senate candidates narrowly held Wisconsin, Nevada and open seats in Michigan and Arizona. In some races, the differences between the Senate candidates’ and Harris’ performances were more pronounced among subsections of the Democratic coalition. While Trump won independents by 2 points, Rosen won the group by 6. Overall, Democratic Senate candidates received more votes than Harris in about half of this year’s races, including in less competitive states such as Minnesota, Virginia and Missouri.

For the second time in eight years, the highest, hardest glass ceiling survived millions of tiny cracks, once again testing the optimism of those who hope to see the first female president elected. The late Rep. Shirley Chisholm, a former New York congresswoman, became the first Black woman to seek the office in 1972. “I’m ready for a female president, I just don’t think that most of America is yet, and I don’t know why,” she said. In the Senate, Angela Alsobrooks will be the first Black woman to represent Maryland and Lisa Blunt Rochester will be the first woman to represent Delaware. Together, the two Democrats will be the first two Black women to serve in the chamber at the same time.

Democrat Angela Alsobrooks has won Maryland’s Senate race, NBC News projects, defeating popular former Republican Gov. Larry Hogan and becoming the first Black woman elected to represent the state in the Senate. It also means that, for the first time in history, Maryland will have a Black senator, governor and mayor of its largest city, Baltimore. Hogan could never quite replicate the support he received from Democrats as governor in his Senate campaign. In Hogan, many Marylanders saw a Republican who represented an increasingly rare version of the party prior to Trump’s takeover.

CNN —Republicans will win the US Senate majority, CNN projects, shifting the balance of power in Washington. Should Harris prevail, she would face problems in confirming members of her Cabinet and judicial nominees, and the GOP Senate could thwart her domestic plans. Jim Justice was projected to pick up the Senate seat vacated by retiring Democrat-turned-independent Sen. Joe Manchin. And in Nebraska, CNN projects that Republican Sen. Deb Fischer will defeat a stronger-than-expected challenge from independent Dan Osborn, who, along with his allies, outspent Republican forces in the state. Alsobrooks will become just the fourth Black woman elected to the Senate after Democrat Lisa Blunt Rochester, the third, was projected to win Delaware’s open Senate seat earlier in the night.

CNN —The winners of several elections up and down the ballot will be making history this year, CNN projects. In the House, CNN projects North Dakota to make history with the election of its first woman, Republican Julie Fedorchak, to the state’s at-large district. DE-AL: Democrat Sarah McBride will be the first transgender member of Congress, CNN projects, winning the race for Delaware’s at-large congressional district. McBride, a state senator, will succeed Democratic Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester, who won election to the US Senate. Johnson, a state representative, will succeed Democratic Rep. Democrats outraised Republicans in all 11 competitive Senate races and in all but one of the 26 “toss-up” House races. Three Senate Democratic candidates — Ohio Sen. And they are long-shot races, especially during a presidential election, when ticket-splitting isn’t as common as it used to be. In Florida and Texas, Democrats are focusing on state abortion bans to try to push beyond their recent losses in those states.
