They're trying to figure out what to do. They're trying to figure out what to do. Thanks to muscle memory from the tariffs Trump imposed in 2018, he says, many businesses are speeding up their shipping schedules — racing to get as many goods as possible into the country before any new tariffs are implemented. So did dryers, even though they weren't subject to tariffs — companies figured customers would assume that two related products were subject to the same inflationary forces. As any recent job-seeker can tell you, hiring has been sluggish for the better part of the year. But good news could be on its way: After many organizations seemed to pause their hiring efforts ahead of the U.S. presidential election, recruiters say they're already seeing an upswing of activity that could extend into the new year. "Now that there is a clear president-elect, we saw the hiring market, especially for the executive-level candidates, open up almost immediately," Boggs tells CNBC Make It. In the week after the election, four of her clients signed offers for new jobs. Job-seeking clients are also seeing an uptick in new roles being posted online, recruiter reach-outs and interviewing activity, she adds.

The biggest worry for allocators to hedge funds is crowding, according to a new Bank of America survey. AdvertisementAllocators are growing more worried about crowding at hedge funds. The survey — which spoke to 160 allocators with roughly $680 billion invested in around 4,300 hedge funds globally — found that the biggest hedge fund managers in the industry are still gobbling assets and market share despite their investors bickering about costs. This flavor of hedge fund brought in $10 billion in net flows in 2024's first six months, and the average multimanager firm runs $1.7 billion. Despite this, allocators, paradoxically, have grown even more concerned about crowding risks in their hedge fund portfolios.

It's time for the Fed to cut rates at the end of July. Add to that the moderation in the consumer price index , the producer price index and the personal consumption expenditures price index – the Fed's preferred inflation gauge – and the need to wait for further signs of improvement seems like overkill. Also, if the Fed dials back policy later – rather than sooner – there will be claims of political interference if it cut rates immediately before the presidential election. The central bank has been dealing with an economy-crashing pandemic, a surge in prices and uncertainty over how its policies would affect the broad economy, inflation and consumer behavior over time. This is a factor that will likely drive inflation rates lower.

NYSEIn 2018, British regulators sanctioned the UK arm of online gambling giant Flutter after it failed to catch an astonishing anomaly. The United States is Flutter's largest and fastest-growing market in terms of revenue. Both online sports betting and online casinos have been legal and regulated far longer in Britain than in the United States. But in the United States, Flutter doesn't place such limits on the age group. Around a decade ago, British politicians became concerned about a rise in gambling-linked fraud and suicides involving online VIP customers.

Even as the court is sometimes finding wider-than-expected majorities for relatively limited outcomes, the nine justices are regularly in conflict over the meaning of decisions. A number of lower-profile cases have also sparked deep doctrinal divisions, even when the final vote count is lopsided. “It does seem, at least anecdotally, unusual to have this many separate opinions in cases with relatively lower stakes,” said Steve Vladeck, CNN Supreme Court analyst and professor at the University of Texas School of Law. What Gen Z gets wrong about work

Gen Z wants to talk about mental health. In a 2023 survey of nearly 3,000 people, Gen Z was almost twice as likely as other generations to say they struggled with their mental health. Related storiesA healthy work environment is one where people feel supported and encouraged to do meaningful work — not one that fixates on their mental health. What does have a tangible impact on people's well-being at work is whether they find their work meaningful. Instead, employers should ensure their staff have access to mental-health care while building a positive culture that promotes meaningful work.

In conversations about these phenomena, social media has consistently been at the center, though mental health issues can have multiple contributing factors. Those with depression were more susceptible to social comparison and pressure to show their best selves on social media. Many young people reported an inability to control their use, social media distracting from other activities and unconsciously reaching for social media when bored. Ask the teens in your life what they like about these platforms and what types of connections or activities support their mental health, Lenhart said. Let them know you’re there to help figure out a solution if social media is upsetting them or interfering with other responsibilities.

While some reviews did laud Swift’s latest offering, the album failed to dazzle a healthy branch of critics. Had Swift’s run as a brilliant pop star finally run its course? It was with those reviews in mind that I hit play last Friday afternoon and visited “The Tortured Poets Department” for myself. Initially, “Tortured Poets” failed to resonate with me.
