The president-elect voiced support for imposing the death penalty on convicted human traffickers and drug dealers, while also saying he would seek to have prosecutors pursue the death penalty for migrants who kill American citizens or anyone who kills a law enforcement officer. It also wants the federal death penalty broadened to include people convicted of sexually abusing children, an application found by the US Supreme Court to be unconstitutional. “We saw what he’s capable of,” Abraham Bonowitz, executive director of the abolitionist Death Penalty Action, said of Trump. The organization does not take a position for or against the death penalty but has been critical of its administration. Federal executions were rare – before TrumpThe federal government and the US military both retain the death penalty, as do 27 states – though executions are paused in six of those states by executive action, according to the Death Penalty Information Center.

Trekking Across Switzerland, Guided by Locals’ Hand-Drawn Maps Nostalgic for a time before ubiquitous connectivity, a writer ditched his phone and relied instead on serendipity — and maps made by people he met along the way. So perhaps the most difficult day was also the day I knew for sure that I would make it — that I’d find my way across Switzerland with nothing but the hand-drawn maps of strangers. The map I’m using was drawn by Susana, a Portuguese woman who married into a local family and now runs a mountain refuge near the village of Grindelwald. LOS ANGELES (AP) — New Jersey came to the West Coast to kick off Grammy Awards weekend, with native sons Jon Bon Jovi and Bruce Springsteen teaming up. Bon Jovi hailed Springsteen as “my hero, my friend, my mentor” to a crowd of 2,000 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Instead of performing at the end of the evening as is traditional for the honoree, Bon Jovi got the nearly three-hour show going. Comedian Jim Gaffigan hosted and relentlessly mocked Bon Jovi for his big hair and penchant for wearing short-shorts in the 1980s. “Livin' On a Prayer” became an all-star finale, with Bon Jovi joined onstage by the other performers for a singalong.

I tried to see the famous green comet in the night skies, far from the city, last weekend. The moon outshined most of the stars, and I couldn't locate the faint comet, even with binoculars. I've heard (and written) a lot of hype about this comet, called C/2022 E3 (ZTF), or Comet ZTF for short. Morgan McFall-JohnsenIf I had spotted the green comet, there's no way I would've been able to capture it on my iPhone X. Who knows, maybe I looked right at the green comet and didn't recognize it because it was too faint.
