OTTAWA, Ontario — Canada expelled six Indian diplomats, including the high commissioner, on Monday, linking them to the murder of a Sikh separatist leader and alleging a broader effort to target Indian dissidents in Canada. Earlier in the day, India retaliated by ordering the expulsion of six high-ranking Canadian diplomats, including the acting high commissioner, and said it had withdrawn its envoy from Canada, contradicting Canada’s statement of expulsion. India said it had asked six Canadian diplomats to leave by Saturday. The ministry also said it had summoned Acting High Commissioner in India Stewart Wheeler, Canada’s top diplomat in the South Asian country. Therefore, the Government of India has decided to withdraw the High Commissioner and other targeted diplomats and officials,” India’s foreign ministry said in a statement.

CNN —Canada announced the expulsion of six Indian diplomats Monday, including the high commissioner, after the police accused agents of the Indian government of being linked to homicides, harassment and other “acts of violence” against Sikh separatists in the country. The Indian government has called the accusations “preposterous” and said it was withdrawing the officials expelled by the Canadian government. Earlier on Monday, the Royal Canada Mounted Police (RCMP) took the unusual step of publicly disclosing details of multiple investigations into the involvement of Indian government agents alleged to have taken part in “serious criminal activity” in Canada. RCMP Commissioner Mike Duheme, left, and Assistant Commissioner Brigitte Gauvin take part in a news conference at RCMP National Headquarters in Ottawa on Oct. 14, 2024. Earlier this year, Canada charged several Indian nationals with the alleged murder of Nijjar, a Canadian citizen.

Canada and India each expelled six diplomats Monday in tit-for-tat moves as part of an escalating dispute over the June 2023 assassination of a Sikh activist in Canada. Shortly afterward, the Indian foreign ministry said that it was expelling six Canadian diplomats, including the acting high commissioner and the deputy high commissioner. It said in a statement that the diplomats were told to leave India by the end of Saturday. A senior Canadian official said that Canada expelled the Indian diplomats first before they withdrew. In response to the allegations, India told Canada last year to remove 41 of its 62 diplomats in the country.

Ratan Tata, the former Tata Group chairman who put a staid and sprawling Indian conglomerate on the global stage with a string of high-profile acquisitions, has died, the Tata Group said in a statement late on Wednesday. Before she built what would become a billion-dollar company, Angie Hicks had to conquer one of her biggest fears: talking to strangers. Hicks — one of the two co-founders of Angi, formerly known as Angie's List — is a self-described introvert. But when the business launched in 1995, she wore many hats — often literally walking door-to-door to recruit Angi's first customers. In 1996, the company rebranded to Angie's List after customers began associating Hicks personally with the recommendations. The company, which went public in 2011, has consistently brought in over one billion dollars every year since 2018.

In younger women, rates have increased at a faster clip — by about 1.4% every year since 2021. Among Asian American and Pacific Islander women under 50, breast cancer diagnoses have increased by 50% since 2000. Today, Black women are 5% less likely to get breast cancer than white women, but are nearly 40% more likely to die from the disease. The American Cancer Society researchers noted that this disparity is seen in even the most treatable types of breast cancer. Each person’s family and personal history and genetics will also determine when they should start screening for breast cancer.

CNN —The US is returning 297 history-spanning antiquities stolen or smuggled from India, many dating back centuries. In July, the US and India signed an agreement to protect cultural property by preventing illegal trades and streamline the process to return stolen antiquities back to India. “Prime Minister (Modi) thanked President Biden for his support in the return of these artifacts,” the India’s Ministry of External Affairs said. India has faced an uphill battle in protecting its valuable cultural treasures from looters, though it has been making headway in recent years. In 2022, the US returned 307 stolen treasures to India as part of a 15-year investigation into international trafficking networks.

An employee of Amazon India walks toward a security gate at the company's newly launched fulfillment center on the outskirts of Bangalore. An Indian antitrust investigation has found U.S. e-commerce giant Amazon and Walmart's Flipkart violated local competition laws by giving preference to select sellers on their shopping websites, according to reports seen by Reuters. The Competition Commission of India in 2020 ordered an investigation into Amazon and Flipkart for allegedly promoting certain sellers with which they had business arrangements and giving priority to certain listings. Amazon and Flipkart, as well as the CCI, did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment. The two companies will now review the report and file any objections before CCI staff decide on any potential fines.

In 2022, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported more than 200,000 syphilis cases — the highest counts since 1950. A somber atmosphere pervades Ukraine’s 33rd Independence Day Saturday, as the nation’s war against Russia’s aggression reaches a 30-month milestone. No fireworks, parades or concerts are planned and instead Ukrainians will mark the day with commemorations for civilians and soldiers killed in the war. “Independence is the silence we experience when we lose our people,” President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said to the nation. “913 days ago, Russia launched its war against us, partly through Sumy region,” Zelenskyy said. Ukraine quickly seized considerable Russian territory, including scores of small towns, and captured hundreds of Russian soldiers, moves that may influence the war’s trajectory.

Modi Arrives in Kyiv as Ukraine Pushes Diplomacy

Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India arrived in Kyiv on Friday, furthering a long diplomatic effort by Ukraine to engage non-Western nations in potential settlement talks in the war with Russia. While many leaders of countries backing Ukraine, including President Biden, have visited Kyiv, Mr. Modi’s trip is the highest-profile wartime visit of a leader of a nation with a neutral stance on the conflict. Ukrainian officials have said that they do not see a mediating role for India, but they portrayed Mr. Modi’s visit as a welcome show of support for their country during the war. The visit is a first by an Indian leader since Ukraine gained independence in 1991. In comments to reporters in Poland before traveling into Ukraine, Mr. Modi said he intended to discuss the war.

But the widowed 78-year-old now has to skimp on her meals because her Social Security benefits haven’t kept up with the rising costs for food, housing and health care in recent years. Social Security benefits have lost 20% of their buying power since 2010, according to a recent analysis by The Senior Citizens League, an advocacy group. Every January, Social Security recipients get an annual cost-of-living adjustment, known as a COLA, but the increases often don’t keep up with the actual rise in prices – hurting senior citizens, many of whom live on fixed incomes and depend heavily on their Social Security benefits. Social Security benefits have risen by 58% between 2010 and 2024, but the cost of goods and services purchased by typical retirees jumped 73% during that time, the league said. For Albrecht, it feels like her Social Security benefits have lost more than 20% of their buying power.
