These sects have coexisted in this region for hundreds of years, and no one has the right to eliminate them,” Jolani told CNN. For now, his leadership of HTS remains defined by military success, with the group growing into a formidable force against the Assad regime and its powerful backers, including Russia and Iran. Still, the question remains: Can HTS can evolve from a militant insurgency into a legitimate governing authority in post-Assad Syria? While the future of HTS and Syria remains uncertain, Jolani is steadfast. The rebel leader said Sunday there would be “no turning back” after toppling the Assad regime.

Rebel fighters claimed they captured the Syrian capital of Damascus early Sunday as government forces loyal to the country's president, Bashar al-Assad, were routed in a mater of days. The rebels' claim would open a new chapter in the 13-year-long civil war that has ravaged the ancient land. The Syrian government has detained thousands at the military prison on the outskirts of Damascus, according to Reuters. HTS rebels claimed Saturday that they had captured the city, a day after also claiming to have seized the city of Daraa. A 2020 ceasefire left Assad in control of 70% of Syria, but some 6.8 million Syrians have fled the country.

Syrian rebels claimed to have seized a key southwestern city close to the border with Jordan as on Saturday they pressed on with a lightning-fast offensive that threatens to further destabilize a region already convulsed by war. "Once they get Homs, then really Damascus is cut off and they'll all be centered around Damascus and Latakia on the coast." But Hellyer said there was not yet a definitive outcome to the conflict despite the rebels' rapid advance. The collapse of government control in Daraa and the threat to Homs signals a growing vulnerability in Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad’s hold on power. The observatory says more than 820 people, including 111 civilians, have been killed across the country since the rebels began their offensive.

Thousands of people have fled the Syrian city of Homs as rebel fighters pushed further south with their rapid assault on government forces, a leading monitoring group said. If the strategically important municipality were to fall, it would leave three of the country’s five largest cities in the hands of the forces led by the militant group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and no major cities between rebel forces and the Syrian capital of Damascus. In less than two weeks they have already captured the second city of Aleppo in the north, as well as the central city of Hama — where government forces were forced out Thursday. “Our forces continue to advance towards the city of Homs at a steady pace, thanks to God, after the arrival of convoys carrying hundreds of displaced people from Homs to deter Assad’s aggression against their city,” said Hassan Abdul-Ghani, senior commander of the HTS-led forces on Friday in a post on X. With his forces nearing, thousands of people had fled towards western coastal regions, a stronghold of the government where fighting has remained less fierce than in other parts of the country, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Friday.

Rebel forces entered the Syrian city of Hama and forced out government troops Thursday, in a development that may have significant consequences in the country's 14-year-long civil war. Military reinforcements being moved from Idlib to control Hama, Syria on Wednesday. The taking the city of Hama by HTS-led forces could prove pivotal in shifting the balance of the civil war. One feature of the battle for Hama — and the broader Syrian civil war — has been fierce aerial attacks from government forces. The air superiority of Assad’s forces — which have long received heavy backing from Russia and Iran — was on display Thursday before government forces left Hama.
