CNN —The Iranian election committee has approved a slate of mostly hardline candidates to run in the presidential election on June 28, following the helicopter crash that killed President Ebrahim Raisi and other officials last month. Out of 80 initial candidates, only six individuals were approved in a vetting process by Iran’s Guardian Council, a powerful 12-member body charged with overseeing elections and legislation. The slate includes hardline parliament speaker and former Revolutionary Guards commander Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf and Saeed Jalili, ex-chief nuclear negotiator and former head of the Supreme National Security Council, Iran’s top security body. Competition is expected to be fierce between Qalibaf and Jalili, both of whom backed Raisi in the 2021 presidential election. The Guardian Council has, however, also approved Masoud Pezeshkian, a reformist lawmaker who served as parliament deputy speaker from 2016 to 2020.

“They are both full of life and passion, and they were fighting with their journalism to improve women’s lives and status in Iran,” said Amir Hossein, a Tehran-based journalist. “Instead of investigating the causes and the people behind Mahsa Amini’s death,” he added, “the regime began blaming the journalists who brought it to light in the first place.”“What can I say?” Mr. Hossein said. But for many of those involved, an official reckoning goes on: The authorities have executed seven protesters, and at least eight more are on death row. At least 95 journalists have been arrested, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists. “We rarely hear the details” of the abuses of Iranian citizens by the authorities, the citation read.

Several hours after the Justice Department unsealed the indictments, the Treasury Department announced new sanctions against 10 Iranian nationals and two Iranian tech companies. Treasury officials described all 10 of the sanctioned individuals as "affiliated with Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps." The IRGC is an elite branch of the Iranian military that oversees Iran's international cyber warfare and espionage operations. According to a notice from the Treasury Department, this particular group of Iranians is not obviously aligned with one of the existing IRGC proxy gangs. The Justice Department has struggled for decades to convince institutional victims of cyberattacks that they would be better served by reporting the attack than by covering it up.
