But on Saturday, at the LACMA Art+Film Gala in Los Angeles, Kardashian debuted another cultural artifact — a diamond-lined cross pendant, once a favorite of Princess Diana. Alberto E. Rodriguez/WireImage/Getty ImagesKardashian bought the piece for £163,800 (around $212,000) in January 2023 during the final five minutes of a Sotheby’s auction. Her red carpet appearance over the weekend marked the first time the necklace has been worn in public since Diana’s death in 1997. Kardashian styled the necklace differently, shortening the pearl chain significantly, and wearing it alongside a stack of jewels, including a six-strand pearl choker. “Why are we still giving this woman precious heirlooms like Diana’s necklace after she broke Marilyn’s dress,” wrote one commenter on Instagram.

In Uruguay, Renato sets off an explosive to reveal an ancient, glittery stone: amethyst. In Italy, Enrico cuts slabs off of one of the most expensive marbles in the world: Calacatta. Stones, salts, crystals, and other natural resources are worth millions of dollars, but getting to them is no easy feat. All over the world, miners are setting off on dangerous and strenuous missions on mountaintops, in underground tunnels, and below the seas to excavate these precious resources. Our first stop is Scotland, where experienced stonemasons turn a rare granite into Olympic curling stones worth over $600 apiece.

Amethyst is one of the most abundant crystals in the world, but the most prized pieces can cost almost a million dollars. Some of the world's largest amethyst geodes come out of Artigas, Uruguay. The earth beneath this region is uniquely suited to producing amethyst. But other than size, what qualities do miners look for in a valuable amethyst? We explored why amethyst geodes are so expensive.

WHOEVER SAID a bird in the hand is better than two in the bush hasn’t been to the cloud forests of Colombia’s Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountains. As the 7 a.m. light breaks through the canopy near the town of Minca, I spy a keel-billed toucan croaking from a mossy pine tree. A flowerpecker darts around a giant fern, and a pair of military macaws fly in formation overhead. About a dozen species of amethyst, emerald and sapphire hummingbirds hover like bejeweled drones over a marmalade bush. In just 30 minutes, we’ve already seen more than 20 species, most of them “lifers” to me—i.e., birds spotted for the first time.

has a bumper crop!” — AmyIf you find eggplant inedible, either because of its texture or taste, you want recipes that use up as much produce as possible while making it largely undetectable. In Kay Chun’s eggplant and bean chili, eggplant is simmered in a garlicky tomato sauce until it collapses into a chile-spiced ragù. Pairing stewed eggplant with aromatics and protein-packed legumes is a solid strategy: Kay does it again in her recipe for eggplant dal, in which cumin, coriander, garlic, ginger and fresh chile season lentils and eggplant. Bitter eggplant is often undercooked eggplant. And if you’re frustrated with the results of sautéing and baking, try steaming: In about 10 minutes, strips of eggplant are rendered silky in Hetty Lui McKinnon’s recipe for liang ban qie zi, eggplant with garlic, ginger and scallions.

LONDON, May 5 (Reuters) - The ceremony for King Charles' coronation at Westminster Abbey in London on Saturday will involve historic regalia ranging from sceptres and maces to a ring and a spoon. It replaced an original crown believed to date back to the 11th century Anglo-Saxon king of England, Edward the Confessor. Once inside he will sit on the Coronation Chair, which is more than 700 years old and will temporarily house a block of Scottish sandstone known as the Stone of Destiny. He will put on, at some point, a 200-year-old cloak that is woven from gold cloth, embroidered with roses, thistles and shamrocks and lined with red silk. Britain’s monarchy and the country’s past are inextricably linked, and a coronation is an opportunity for the institution to nod at history and hope that history nods back. A successful coronation telegraphs to the world — and reflects back to as many Britons as possible — a version of who we’d like to think we are. The problem is that this coronation is arriving at a time when it’s not exactly clear what that is.
Ancient Romans Dropped Their Bling Down the Drain, Too

Down the drain is where British archaeologists recently discovered 36 artfully engraved semiprecious stones, in an ancient bathhouse at the site of a Roman fort near Hadrian’s Wall in Carlisle, England. The colorful intaglios — gems with incised carvings — likely fell out of signet rings worn by wealthy third-century bathers, and ended up trapped in the stone drains. The delicate intaglios, fashioned from amethyst, jasper and carnelian, range in diameter from 5 millimeters to 16 millimeters — bigger than a pencil eraser, smaller than a dime. Some bear images of Apollo, Mars, Bonus Eventus and other Roman deities symbolizing war or good fortune. How and why these stones were lost is a subject of some debate among classicists.

There’s nothing wrong with Valentine standbys like flowers or chocolate—opt for an arrangement with staying power like the paper creations conjured by Livia Cetti of the Green Vase (we’re partial to the jet-black hollyhock) or a box of single-origin truffles courtesy of San Francisco’s Dandelion Chocolate. But to fulfill Valentine’s expectations in a less expected way, we suggest going the beauty and wellness route, particularly with products that span the color spectrum (yes, the classic reds and pinks but also canary yellow and rich amethyst and pea green too). From indulgent face creams to artful makeup palettes to a Pilates machine that tucks away, here’s a list of products that are sure to become objects of affection. Painter’s Palettes…for the FaceThanks to a bounty of TikTok and YouTube tutorials, creative experimentation with makeup is trending. So go for a painterly palette—Dior’s is a leopard-encased nod to the brand’s muse Mitzah Bricard, the ’50s-era fashion icon known for her love of all things leopard; makeup artist Jo Baker’s credit card–size versions for her new line, Bakeup, are slim but pack serious pigment payoff; and the colors in Isamaya’s rhinestone-studded, punk-rock Wild Star compact live up to its moniker.
