I spent the bulk of my Friday column summarizing early Republic and antebellum debates on the nature of the American Republic. The arguments run from Thomas Jefferson and James Madison in the 1790s to Abraham Lincoln in the 1860s. Speaking of Lincoln, researching that column gave me an excuse to read through a few of his most famous speeches and addresses. They organized speeches, debates, lectures and dramatic performances and brought in notable persons to participate. Some of these were tied to a particular town or city; others were operations that moved from place to place.

In North America, South America, Europe and elsewhere, those who consider themselves to be “conservatives” may or may not embrace liberal commitments. You can be, at once, a liberal, as understood here, and a conservative; you can be a leftist and illiberal. Historically, both Republicans and Democrats have been part of the liberal tradition. Many liberals have invoked an anticaste principle to combat entrenched forms of inequality on the basis of race, sex, and disability. The rule of law is not the same as a commitment to freedom of speech, freedom of religion or freedom from unreasonable searches and seizures.

LAS VEGAS, Oct 28 (Reuters) - U.S. Republican presidential candidates including frontrunner Donald Trump will address major Republican Jewish donors in Las Vegas on Saturday at a gathering that will seek their unequivocal commitment to wiping out Palestinian Hamas militants. A pro-DeSantis super PAC has attacked Haley on the Israel front, claiming she supports resettling refugees from Gaza in the United States. The RJC's Brooks said he was sure Trump would show "further commitment" to Israel on Saturday. To be sure, Israel is unlikely to be an election-defining issue and Republican voters are warier of foreign conflicts. "The growing isolationist movement in our party is dangerous," said Levine, who is supporting Senator Tim Scott and also likes Haley.

Ron DeSantis on Tuesday completed the full-scale reboot of his once-promising presidential campaign, reassigning his campaign manager and elevating a loyal hand from his governor's office. James Uthmeier, DeSantis' chief of staff in Tallahassee, will now lead his campaign, news first reported by The Messenger. DeSantis' former campaign manager Generra Peck, who also led DeSantis' midterm reelection romp, will remain as a chief strategist. Between the Dominion Voting Systems settlement and the Tucker Carlson firing, we’ve had a lot of real-world Fox drama lately, and the contrast between reality and fiction tells us something interesting about how art depicts our politics — and how the nature of democratic politics can resist successful dramatization. In the world of “Succession,” the key election-night dilemma is somewhat similar — when to call a crucial state — but the dynamics are quite different. The show’s presidential election is disrupted by a fire (arson?) at a Milwaukee precinct that destroys thousands of ballots, leaving the right-wing candidate ahead pending litigation, and his campaign wants ATN (the show’s Fox News) to call Wisconsin for him immediately. With two episodes left, the dice seem loaded for the second outcome: Failsons and a faildaughter lose their company and, oops, bring down the American republic along the way.

Arms dealer Viktor Bout, nicknamed the "Merchant of Death," is asking Trump to flee to Russia. He sent Trump a telegram, warning him to escape charges in New York and that his "life is in peril." Bout said Trump would find "safe haven" in Russia, where he could rebel against "globalists." They would sooner end your life than let you stand in their way," Bout's message read, Russian state media first reported. George Santos, R-N.Y., said claims that he performed as a drag queen are “categorically false.” His denial comes shortly after a Brazilian drag performer shared on social media an image of herself and another person in drag, whom she identified as the newly elected congressman. “The most recent obsession from the media claiming that I am a drag Queen or ‘performed’ as a drag Queen is categorically false,” Santos, who has been the subject of international headlines for weeks for fabricating parts of his résumé, tweeted Thursday morning. Rochard, who is identified as Eula Rorard in the photo, claims the other person in drag went by the stage name Kitara Ravache and is, in fact, Santos. As of Thursday afternoon, the images had been widely circulated on social media and news websites. A lawyer for Santos did not return NBC News’ request for comment regarding the congressman’s stance on the proposed policies related to drag performances.
