The era of freeloading is officially over

But thanks to the fine-tuning of the tech that Corporate America uses to police subscriptions, those freeloading days are over. Costco and Disney this month took a page from the Netflix playbook and announced they are cracking down on account sharers. Disney’s streaming business — Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ — only became profitable in the second quarter this year. Like Netflix, Costco is betting that you’re already emotionally invested in the routine and the satisfaction of getting a closet’s worth of toilet paper that can last the whole year. Last year, the store reported $4.6 billion in revenue from membership fees, and that accounts for the majority of its profit.

In the court document filed Monday, Sheil denied allegations of copyright infringement made in Gifford’s lawsuit. In her lawsuit, Gifford alleges that Sheil had blocked her on Instagram and TikTok in January 2023 after the two met for a photo shoot collaboration. In her lawsuit, Gifford listed multiple examples of Sheil’s posts that she argues are similar to her own and shared screenshots of the examples as exhibits. “Neutral colors have been in for some time,” Sheil’s attorneys argue, citing Chip and Joanna Gaines’ HGTV programs and celebrities such as Hailey Bieber, who tap into the same aesthetic. Gifford’s lawsuit also noted that the creators use Amazon Storefront, which creators often use as a one-stop shop for their followers to browse their product recommendations.

US stocks fell after a weak July jobs report raised concerns of a slowing economy. The US added 114,000 jobs in July, below estimates of 175,000, and the unemployment rate unexpectedly rose to 4.3%. Read previewLate last year, Amazon projected its healthcare businesses to lose more than $1 billion for 2024, according to an internal planning document obtained by Business Insider. Although the company doesn't breakout financials on the healthcare business, investors will be looking for signs of success when it reports results on Thursday. That was mostly thanks to Amazon Pharmacy, which was projected to generate $1.81 billion in 2024 sales, a 45% surge. Amazon healthcare is slowing investments in smaller initiatives by delaying hiring for certain projects and reducing contractor spend, it added. It's upgrading the signup process, such as insurance card capture technology, and simplifying the linking between One Medical and Amazon Pharmacy accounts.

While working there, I never felt indifferent toward the company; I either loved or hated it. Amazon felt like an engineer-driven company because technical engineers had control over entire projects versus being assigned small tasks by non-technical managers. As a senior engineer, I ran a training on "customer obsession," one of the main "leadership principles" that define Amazon employees. Because there are so many principles, managers could use them in contradictory ways. Amazon on-call shifts were frustrating and exhaustingAt Amazon, most of our product decisions were based on customers.

The two Texas-based creators met up to talk about potentially producing content together given their similar fashion niches, according to a lawsuit filed by Gifford. Lawyers told BI that if Gifford wins any or all of the counts, the case could set a new precedent for the creator economy. It could drastically change how influencers create content online and protect their rights. She said this case could spark a fire in the creator community regardless of whether Gifford wins or loses. "The audience online is really smart though, and they'll figure it who the original creator is eventually," Puri said.

Amazon is a buy ahead of its annual Prime Day starting Tuesday — even as the stock has rallied hard this year. One potential catalyst for the stock is Amazon's annual Prime Day event and its ripple effects. JPMorgan, for one, said Prime Day will help Amazon "rationalize inventory levels" ahead of higher consumer demand in the second half of the year. They also said Prime Day should be a driver for Amazon's advertising business, particularly on Amazon Prime Video ad spend. Fifty-one percent of respondents, a survey record, said they opted for Amazon's same-day delivery option.
