Read previewLate last year, Amazon projected its healthcare businesses to lose more than $1 billion for 2024, according to an internal planning document obtained by Business Insider. Although the company doesn't breakout financials on the healthcare business, investors will be looking for signs of success when it reports results on Thursday. That was mostly thanks to Amazon Pharmacy, which was projected to generate $1.81 billion in 2024 sales, a 45% surge. Amazon healthcare is slowing investments in smaller initiatives by delaying hiring for certain projects and reducing contractor spend, it added. It's upgrading the signup process, such as insurance card capture technology, and simplifying the linking between One Medical and Amazon Pharmacy accounts.

The head of Amazon's healthcare business wants employees to know Tuesday's layoffs are part of a normal business cycle, not a sign of underperformance. He noted that other companies have also made similar job cuts lately, urging employees not to believe the "pundits" who may say negative things about Amazon's healthcare business. "As often happens with changes like this, some pundits may speculate that we're eliminating roles because our health care business is underperforming — don't believe this speculation. In a separate email on Tuesday , Lindsay highlighted the growth of Amazon's healthcare business, saying the layoffs were intended to "reposition resources" so the company can better invest in other growth areas. He also said Amazon integrated One Medical's finance, legal, and tech teams into Amazon's healthcare business as it looks to "realign resources."

Amazon is beefing up its mainstay Prime subscription program with a new benefit that gives members access to discounted One Medical memberships. Prime members can add up to five additional memberships on the same plan at a rate of $6 per person, Amazon said. Amazon is integrating One Medical into its Prime membership service after acquiring the primary health-care provider in July 2022 for roughly $3.9 billion. The tech giant has steadily added a buffet of benefits to its Prime membership program over the years as a way to lure more subscribers. Launched in 2005, Amazon Prime gives members access to free two-day shipping, as well as access to exclusive movies and TV shows, among other perks.

Amir Dan Rubin, CEO of primary care provider One Medical, which Amazon acquired about a year ago, is leaving the company later this year. Twitch CEO Emmett Shear resigned from Amazon in March, and Whole Foods CEO John Mackey retired last year. Amazon has looked to shore up its presence in health care through the One Medical and PillPack deals, as well as by developing services in-house. Last August, the company shuttered its Amazon Care telehealth service amid broader cost-cutting efforts. Haven, a joint venture intended to disrupt health care, disbanded in 202.

Further, as machine learning adoption has continued to accelerate, customers have yearned for lower-cost GPUs (the chips most commonly used for machine learning). While some areas of the economy have struggled over the past few years, Amazon Business has thrived. Some people have never heard of Amazon Business, but, our business customers love it. For years, Amazon customers had asked us when we'd offer them an online pharmacy as their frustrations mounted with current providers. More recently, a newer form of machine learning, called Generative AI, has burst onto the scene and promises to significantly accelerate machine learning adoption.

Many employees in the Slack channel expressed shock and surprise.
Amazon is expanding its healthcare offerings following its deal to buy One Medical, this time by opening a new virtual care option to help with common conditions like allergies, acne and hair loss. The service does not yet accept insurance, but customers can use insurance to help pay for medications prescribed by a licensed clinician through the platform. To use the service, customers select the condition they're interested in speaking about and then choose a preferred provider. Customers can also use money from flexible spending accounts and healthcare spending accounts to pay for the service. The new program comes just a few months after Amazon announced it was shutting down Amazon Care, a different telehealth service, by the end of the year.
Early last month, members of Amazon's secretive in-house research lab, Grand Challenge, were called into an unexpected video meeting. Weibel announced 3 of the 5 projects Grand Challenge was working on would shut down, effective immediately. When other team employees wanted to collaborate with the team, they needed additional approvals from its leadership. Amazon Glow was among the Grand Challenge projects to be discontinued at the end of this year. Getting support promoting Grand Challenge projects was a challenge too.
Amazon hired many positions in healthcare informatics last quarter, according to H-1B visa filings. The new positions include nursing-informatics specialists, who typically manage patient data, and medical laboratory technicians. But the end of Amazon Care, which failed to gain as much traction as Amazon had hoped, coincides with an expansion of Amazon's healthcare ambitions. The company announced plans in July to purchase the One Medical chain of medical clinics for $3.9 billion. Data-privacy activists have registered concerns about the company's planned acquisition of One Medical, which would give Amazon control of huge amounts of patient data.
It's part of the cloud giant's plan to curb labor costs that insiders say is starting to hurt morale. Oracle is steering clear of job-seekers in major tech hubs. These guidelines come amid other hiring restrictions implemented at the cloud giant, which employees say are further tanking already low morale. In some cases, hiring managers are being asked to backfill formerly US-based roles with candidates from Eastern Europe to save money. Oracle is trying to cut $1 billion in costs and has already had two rounds of layoffs in recent months.
