CNN —Tiny plastic shards and fibers were found in the nose tissue of human cadavers, according to a small new study. The threads and microplastic pieces were discovered in the olfactory bulb, the part of the nose responsible for detecting odors that sits at the base of the brain. Microplastics are polymer fragments that can range from less than 0.2 inch (5 millimeters) down to 1/25,000th of an inch (1 micrometer). However, an April 2023 study found that microplastics made of polypropylene appeared to exacerbate the advance of breast cancer. The nose is one of many ways through which microplastics can enter the body, experts say.

But after falling during her routine — as many other gymnasts did, too — Biles ended up in fifth. Alice D’Amato of Italy won the gold medal, with 14.366 points, and Zhou Yaqin of China won the silver, with 14.1 points. Another Italian, Manila Esposito, won the bronze, with 14.0 points. Of the eight gymnasts competing, four fell off the beam, including Sunisa Lee, the other American in the event, who finished sixth. Zhou lost her balance and had to grab the beam to steady herself, miscalculating one of the easier skills in an otherwise stellar routine.

The competition began with a commanding lead for Biles, who scored 15.766 for her namesake Yurchenko double pike, the hardest vault in the world. And Sunisa Lee, the defending Olympic all-around champion, trailed after the first three rotations but came back to win the bronze with a solid performance on floor. Paris CNN —Simone Biles is once again the Olympic gold medalist in individual all-around gymnastics after winning one of the most dramatic finals of these Paris Olympics. Biles held off a spirited challenge from brilliant Brazilian Rebeca Andrade, who once again won silver and Biles’ teammate Suni Lee took the bronze. Her artistry and rhythm were infectious and, until her final floor exercise penalty, she turned in an incredibly solid, well-rounded performance. Young was best known for his role as Rocky Balboa’s brother-in-law Paulie in the “Rocky” movie franchise. Sylvester Stallone, who starred as Rocky, paid tribute to Young on Wednesday. “I was on the MGM lot when Sly Stallone came over and introduced himself to me, told me he wrote ‘Rocky’ and said ‘you gotta do it,’” Young recalled. He has a real eyeball for what’s going on in the world.”It helped establish Young as an actor who could play the heavy, but also be complex.

But one recent PR campaign has centered on Justice Clarence Thomas, The Washington Post reported. But one more recent campaign was directed at Justice Thomas, who had already spent about three decades on the Court's bench. According to the Post, a nonprofit called the Judicial Education Project paid the lawyer about $300,000 in 2016 for "media projects." "Since his confirmation on October 15, 1991, Justice Thomas has been a stalwart defender of the original meaning of the Constitution." The comment was made years ago in a 2007 biography of Thomas, "Supreme Discomfort: The Divided Soul of Clarence Thomas."

About 33.8 million Americans didn't have adequate access to food, according to the latest report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. "Food inflation, as we've seen during the pandemic, has gone up, driven in large part by supply chain disruptions and shortages of food supply during the pandemic," according to Erika Thiem, chief supply chain officer at the nonprofit Feeding America. Food deserts, where access to affordable and healthy foods is limited, have also been widely blamed as a major cause of hunger in the U.S. He continued, "it's food prices that matter, not food access." "I think part of this is how problems compound problems," according to Stacy Dean, deputy under secretary at the USDA.
