We found so much to see, do, eat, and drink while exploring Germany and Austria. Some of my favorite experiences were Oktoberfest in Munich and a spa day in Baden-Baden. CNN —A small silver amulet discovered by archaeologists in Germany could transform our understanding of how Christianity spread under the Roman Empire, experts have said. However, it has taken until now for researchers to be able to examine a thin silver foil that was found inside it. The “hair-thin” foil inside the amulet was so brittle that it would have simply disintegrated if researchers had tried to unfurl it. At the time of the burial, Christianity was becoming an increasingly popular sect but identifying as a Christian was still risky. Markus Scholz, an archaeologist and expert in Latin inscriptions and professor at Frankfurt’s Goethe University, painstakingly deciphered the text of the “Frankfurt Silver Inscription,” as it is known.

CNN —Twelve people have been found dead at a ski resort in the former Soviet country of Georgia, police said. The bodies of 11 Indian nationals and one Georgian citizen were discovered on the second floor above an Indian restaurant in Gudauri, the largest ski resort in the country, local police said in a statement issued Saturday. The 12 people all worked in the building where their bodies were found, the statement added. More than 300,000 international travelers visited the Gudauri resort in 2023, according to a local consulting firm. The resort’s parking lot sits at 7,200 feet (2,195 meters) – higher than the tops of many slopes in the Alps.

Three mountain climbers from the United States and Canada are missing after they did not return from their planned summit of New Zealand’s tallest mountain, Aoraki, officials said Tuesday. The Canadian national is not being named by New Zealand Police until his family is notified. The search for them began Monday after they failed to show up for their morning flight out, police said. They said they were working with the U.S. and Canadian embassies to inform and support the families of the three men. Property companies say the quality of the skiing is not the only criteria for some Alpine buyers. Instead of winter sports, wellness is taking priority for many seeking an Alpine chalet. AdvertisementYet, for some wealthy chalet buyers in upmarket towns such as Gstaad and Courchevel, it seems skiing is no longer the only draw. Pristine slopes are not the only draw for Alpine chalet buyers. Rollason added that if the uber-wealthy are buying a chalet, "then it's not just a chalet — it's an all-encompassing leisure object."

Beneath the snowy slopes lay a prehistoric surprise: an ecosystem that predates the dinosaurs, revealed by melting snow before being stumbled upon by a hiker in the Italian Alps. Intrigued, she snapped photos and shared them with her friend, Elio Della Ferrera, a nature photographer. Della Ferrera then contacted Dal Sasso, at the museum in Milan, to learn more about the discovery. These environmental shifts contributed to the extinction of many species, which we may now encounter as fossils on a fortunate hike. “The past has much to teach us about what we risk doing to the world today,” the researchers warned.

Among other findings, it warns that several key climate tipping points appear more likely to be reached than previously thought. Ice loss from the Thwaites Glacier, also known as the “Doomsday” glacier because its collapse could precipitate rapid Antarctic ice loss, may be unstoppable. These are just a few of the stark findings from more than 50 leading snow and ice scientists, which are detailed in a new report from the International Cryosphere Climate Initiative. The report highlights a shift in consensus: Scientists once thought tipping points — like the collapse of AMOC — were distant or remote possibilities. Even if they were on track, those commitments are insufficient to reach global climate goals, the authors say.

CNN —Lost luggage is one of the major woes of the modern travel era, with rates of mishandled bags still up since the start of the pandemic. But travelers wanting their bags back will still have to move fast – the shareable tracking option is currently only available for a week. In 2023, airlines lost an average of 6.9 bags per 1,000 passengers, according to SITA, which offers solutions for the aviation industry. That’s an improvement on 2022, which saw a whopping 7.6 bags lost per 1,000 passengers — but still well up on pre-pandemic numbers. In 2019, 5.6 bags were lost per 1,000 flyers.

Elevator test towers can go higher still. Elevator test towers are “a bit like a test track for a Formula One team,” said Tomio Pihkala, chief technology officer at Finnish elevator manufacturer Kone, in a phone interview. Like all skyscrapers, elevator towers need to withstand strong winds that can cause swaying and affect test conditions. The resulting oscillation simulates wind and earthquakes, which are among the biggest challenges in elevator development, according to TK Elevator. Urolithin A supplement company Timeline has investments from both Nestlé and L'Oréal. This year, the conversation quickly turned to the supplement du jour, the compound that has drawn investment from both Nestlé and L'Oréal: Urolithin A. Starting in 2008, Rinch's supplement company, Amazentis, funded over a dozen studies on urolithin A, including some relatively large, placebo-controlled trials in people — a rarity in supplement research. Urolithin A has also captured the attention of longevity researchers, who are typically more skeptical about products promising to make you young again.
