CNN —More than half a million people have been evacuated from their homes as Super Typhoon Man-yi made landfall along the eastern coast of Catanduanes, Philippines on Saturday. A further 18,000 were preemptively evacuated from the Eastern Samar and Samar provinces, PNA reported, with patients and staff members of Eastern Samar’s Arteche District Hospital being evacuated to the area’s municipal hall. Man-yi underwent rapid intensification on Friday, jumping from a tropical storm early Friday to a super typhoon early Saturday. Hundreds of thousands of people were evacuated from their homes as others made preparations for the typhoon ahead of its landfall on Saturday. After crossing Catanduanes, Man-yi is expected to make another landfall about 70 miles (110 km) northeast of Manila Sunday afternoon.

In just one hour, nearly a month’s worth of rainfall inundated the city of Malaga, in Spain’s Andalusia region, according to the country’s meteorological agency AEMet. The southern Spanish province picked up roughly 100 millimeters (4 inches) of rain so far on Wednesday, 78 millimeters (3 inches) of which fell within an hour. The Malaga City Council issued evacuation orders Wednesday near the Campanillas River due to the risk of overflowing. The coastal area of Valencia province has now been issued a red weather warning for Thursday. The City Council of Valencia announced that school activities are suspended throughout Valencia city and its districts this Wednesday and Thursday to avoid risks.

A hurricane watch has been issued for the Cayman Islands: Grand Cayman, Little Cayman and Cayman Brac. Potential Tropical Cyclone Eighteen is forecast to become a tropical storm as it approaches Jamaica by Monday, with hurricane conditions possible in the Cayman Islands Tuesday into Wednesday. “This system is expected to become a tropical depression tonight and steady strengthening is forecast,” the National Hurricane Center says. Regardless of tropical storm development, this system will bring very heavy rain, tropical storm-force winds, storm surge, and high surf to Jamaica, the Cayman Islands and southern Cuba over the next several days. For Tampa that would equal more than five months’ worth of rain – the average for October is 2.34 inches. More than 10 inches of rain could also break monthly records for some cities in central Florida. The heavy rainfall combined with high storm surge could create an especially dangerous situation. Flood watches remain for nearly 20 million people across Florida, and over 5 million people are under storm surge alerts.

The storm is quickly strengthening, already boasting winds of 65 mph, according to an update Sunday morning from the National Hurricane Center. Tropical Storm Milton formed in the western Gulf on Saturday morning just hours after it became a tropical depression, the National Hurricane Center said in a special alert. Milton is forecast to strengthen and bring life-threatening impacts to portions of the west coast of Florida next week. Hurricane watches, as well as storm surge watches, will likely be issued for portions of the Florida coast on Sunday – a dangerous storm surge is expected for some areas that were just affected by Helene. CNN —Less than 10 days after Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida, the state is now bracing for another potential storm brewing in the Gulf of Mexico. Tropical Depression 14 formed in the western Gulf on Saturday morning and is expected to become Tropical Storm Milton in the next 24 hours, the National Hurricane Center said. Hurricane watches, as well as storm surge watches, will likely be issued for portions of the Florida coast on Sunday. There is also an increasing risk of storm surge for the western Florida Peninsula as early as late Tuesday or Wednesday. A multi-day system will slide across much of the country and bring the potential for tornadoes, large hail, flooding and even snow. Snow and freezing rain will fall to the north, while heavy rain and severe thunderstorms unfold on the warmer side of the system. By Tuesday, the severe threat shifts east into an area from northern Mississippi to southern Pennsylvania. One of the elements fueling the severe threat is the clash of cold air behind the system with the warm air out ahead. CNN —At least 27 people have been killed in southeast Brazil as rainfall continues to ravage parts of the country, according to CNN affiliate CNN Brasil citing state authorities. The death toll in the Brazilian state of Espirito Santo rose to 19, and at least eight people have been killed in neighboring state Rio de Janeiro, CNN Brasil reported citing each state’s respective Civil Defense. At least six people are still missing, and more than 7,000 people were forced to flee their homes in Espirito Santo, according to CNN Brasil. Flooding and landslides remain one of the main concerns as rainfall has yet to cease through the week.

CNN —A stronger and longer-lasting atmospheric river event is set to hit California this weekend, bringing a considerable risk for flash flooding, mudslides, damaging winds, and heavy mountain snow. Nearly 40 million people are under flood watches including San Francisco, Sacramento, Los Angeles, and San Diego. In Southern California, widespread rainfall totals of 3 to 6 inches are expected – more than a month’s worth of rain for most. A more widespread Level 2 exists for much of coastal California including San Francisco down through Los Angeles. On Monday, the Level 3 of 4 risk expands farther south to include Los Angeles.

CNN —Residents of the central United States experienced poor air quality and smoke over the weekend. The effects of the fires extend far beyond Canada, with poor air quality emerging in states as far away as Missouri and New York. Several states, including Nebraska, Washington, Montana and Wisconsin, announced air quality alerts early Friday. The service in Tacoma reported the smoke would be “pushed eastward in time for the weekend.”As of Sunday afternoon, the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Air Quality Index reported “unhealthy” levels of air quality in parts of Montana and North and South Dakota. Poor air quality caused by the smoke would mostly affect those “that are particularly sensitive to particle pollution,” they said.

CNN —An atmospheric river event, bringing ample amounts of moisture to the West this weekend, will gradually move across the country and bring hazardous weather to millions. The blockbuster storm will begin in the West with heavy snow, gusty winds, and coastal flooding, then move eastward, threatening potential blizzard conditions in the Midwest and tornadoes in the South. More than a dozen western states are under winter weather alerts this weekend as the potent storm system moves across the region. Heavy rain will also be notable up and down the West Coast, particularly in California, where flooding concerns exist through Sunday. Similar to a fire hose, it shoots moisture into one area for an extended period of time, resulting in very heavy rain or snow.
