By Thursday evening, after a series of court battles and escalating appeals, the Texas Supreme Court had issued a temporary stay of execution. The AG is representing TDCJ, and is calling the shots, while simultaneously attacking the underlying subpoena before the Texas Supreme Court. We expected that the subpoena would be honored pursuant to Texas law and the Committee’s intent. “It’s the entire case, and that is Mr. Roberson’s case,” Keith Findley, professor emeritus with the University of Wisconsin Law School, testified before the Texas Committee on Criminal Jurisprudence last week. The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals previously issued a stay of execution in Roberson’s case in 2016, sending a claim under Article 11.073 (among others) back to the trial court.

Former President Donald Trump called rival Kamala Harris a "s--- vice president" during a rally in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, Saturday evening, punctuating his broader argument that she is too liberal in a more aggressive fashion and with fresh vulgarity. "And then, so you have to tell Kamala Harris that you’ve had enough, that you just can’t take it anymore. You’re a s--- vice president." Trump added the catchphrase from his bygone television show "The Apprentice" to cheers: "Kamala, you're fired," he said. The Harris campaign quickly pounced on the anecdote.

And the Harris campaign said it’s placing ads on sports talk radio and is taking advantage of major NFL, MLB and college football games. The ads end with the tag line: “Kamala is for they/them; President Trump is for you.”These efforts come amid the backdrop of a massive gender gap between the two candidates. The prosecution also plans to call witnesses who said they saw Allen at the trail. Allen, 52, dressed in a long-sleeve button-down shirt and khakis, shook his head at times during McLeland's opening statement. One key piece of evidence — video retrieved from Libby's cellphone that was found underneath Abby's body — showed the apparent suspect. As the trial opened this week, the defense lawyers withdrew a request for jurors to be able to visit the crime scene, which prosecutors had opposed. Defense lawyers, however, may still get to argue during the trial why certain evidence is admissible.

Seven years ago, the bodies of two teenage girls were discovered near a hiking trail outside the small Indiana town of Delphi. Allen worked at a CVS in Delphi and had processed photos for Libby’s family without charging them, her grandparents have said. Investigators found the images on Libby’s cellphone and released them days after the girls' bodies were discovered in a bid to identify a possible suspect. Allen, who was interviewed by authorities in 2017 and admitted being at the trail the day the teens vanished, was arrested in 2022. In a request for a search warrant in 2017, an FBI agent said the girls' bodies appeared to have been moved and staged.

A former Olympic snowboarder has been charged with running a drug smuggling operation that allegedly shipped huge amounts of narcotics across borders and killed four people, the FBI said Thursday. He was previously charged with running a continuing criminal enterprise, murder, and conspiring to possess, distribute, and export cocaine. "The cocaine trafficking organization’s operatives would store the cocaine in stash houses, before delivering it to the transportation network couriers for transportation to Canada using long-haul semi-trucks," prosecutors said. Wedding, top left, is pictured alongside 15 other defendants during a press conference at the FBI offices in Los Angeles on Thursday. "As alleged in the indictment, an Olympic athlete-turned-drug lord is now charged with leading a transnational organized crime group that engaged in cocaine trafficking and murder, including of innocent civilians," Estrada said.

Michelle Lujan Grisham said she will not renew a public health order that temporarily banned carrying firearms in public parks and playgrounds in Albuquerque, the state's largest city. Lujan Grisham said in a news release Wednesday that more than 1,700 firearms were collected in gun buybacks over the past year because of the order. So there’s no way we could enforce that order.”Lujan Grisham issued the temporary order, originally a 30-day ban, in September 2023 after an 11-year-old boy was shot and killed in an Albuquerque park. In addition to restricting firearms in public parks and playgrounds in Bernalillo County, it strengthened oversight of firearm sales and implemented wastewater testing for fentanyl in public schools. The Game: Denver (3-3) at New Orleans (2-4)The Storyline: Denver coach Sean Payton returns to New Orleans for the first time since 2022, when he stepped down after 15 seasons as the Saints’ coach, a run that included the franchise’s only Super Bowl title. Payton has downplayed the effect the emotions of the visit will have on the game itself, as has Dennis Allen, the longtime Saints assistant who succeeded Payton. New Orleans has converted 47% of its third-down opportunities, the NFL’s third-highest rate, while the Broncos rank second worst at 25%. Saints rookie quarterback Spencer Rattler completed 22 of his 40 passes against Tampa Bay with a touchdown and two interceptions Sunday in his pro debut. That could spell trouble against a New Orleans defense with 10 interceptions, second most in the league.

A federal judge on Wednesday temporarily blocked Alabama’s voter removal program that flagged thousands of registered voters and accused them of illegally registering in the state. The Justice Department sued the state of Alabama challenging the program aimed at removing voters from its election rolls, arguing it was too close to the Nov. 5 election. Allen announced a process for purging 3,251 registered Alabama voters in August, 84 days before Election Day. The case is among several instances of voter purges in Republican-led states ahead of this fall’s presidential election. The Justice Department lawsuit said it has already been determined that legal voters were mistakenly purged from the voter rolls.

"There's a belief that movable voters move late," said one Harris campaign official, who described the thinking behind her approach on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak for her. Trump often derides nonpartisan media as "fake news" and an "enemy of the public," but he hasn't completely abandoned those platforms. Since she took over as the Democratic candidate for President Joe Biden, Harris' media strategy has evolved. A second Harris campaign official said her team believes it is now in a very small window where undecided voters are paying attention, and she can actually break through. Specifically, this official said Harris’ appearance on Fox News is indicative of the fact that she needs white working-class women.

CNN —A federal judge ordered Alabama’s Republican secretary of state on Wednesday to reverse a program that purged more than 3,000 names from the state’s voter rolls, agreeing with the Biden administration’s argument that the purge took place too close to the election. “For decades, federal law has given states a hard deadline to complete systematic purges of ineligible persons from voter rolls: no later than ninety days before a federal election. This year, Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen blew the deadline when he announced a purge program to begin eighty-four days before the 2024 General Election,” US District Judge Anna Manasco wrote in a 5-page preliminary injunction. Nonpartisan election law experts say it’s almost always caught when it does happen, and that it isn’t a widespread problem plaguing US elections. In a similar lawsuit brought last week in Virginia, the Justice Department alleged that state officials violated the NVRA “quiet period” by recently purging voters flagged as potential noncitizens.
