And in that sky, directly above this beach volleyball stadium, loomed the Eiffel Tower. Of all 32 sports being played in these Olympics, none has a location that rivals beach volleyball. Beach volleyball’s Olympic history dates back to 1996 and a simple artificial beach stadium in Clayton County Park outside Atlanta. It’s easy to feel impossibly small in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower. There are seven more sunsets over Eiffel Tower Stadium for beach volleyball.

Hens blush when excited or scared, study finds

To understand how hens visibly express emotion, researchers spent four weeks on a French farm observing 17 hens of two different breeds, Bertin said, filming their routine behaviors and their reactions to different stimuli. Researchers observed 17 hens on a French farm. INRAE Arnould BertinTo make their more general conclusions, researchers extracted images from every two seconds of film and selected ones that featured the hen in profile to best study them. Although researchers weren’t able to explain the mechanism by which hens blush in this study, they concluded that the cheeks and ear lobes were more revealing of the birds’ emotions than their comb or wattles. Building on the results of this study, Bertin hopes to investigate whether these displays of emotion are linked to the hens’ social interactions, as well the implications for animal welfare.

One possibility is the coding rounds of the typical tech job interview, where candidates are prompted by interviewers to solve technical problems. So, job candidates can easily use something like ChatGPT to effectively cheat their way to fast solutions, according to a recent experiment conducted by interviewing.io, a popular platform for mock tech interviews and industry recruiting. When coding problems were taken verbatim from LeetCode, job candidates using ChatGPT solved correctly 73% of the time, interviewing.io found. That’s far worse than how tech job candidates fare on their own. Relying on their own abilities, interviewing.io found that job candidates passed coding rounds of interviews 53% of the time.

The storm has put the migrant population in Tijuana in an even more vulnerable position, since most of the camps and shelters lack the basic conditions to withstand even light rain. While waiting for an asylum appointment in the border city of Tijuana, Mr. Torres found himself not only escaping violence but also a life-threatening tropical storm on Friday. Mexico warned the western state of Baja California on Saturday to brace for what could be life-threatening rain and floods from Hurricane Hilary, the Pacific storm barreling toward the peninsula and neighboring Southern California. State and federal authorities urged citizens to take precautions ahead of the storm, which was expected to make landfall early Sunday. Although Hilary weakened somewhat on Saturday, officials warned it remained lethally destructive. More than 6,500 soldiers were deployed Friday to the states of Baja California and Baja California Sur to help erect shelters, organize food banks and prepare for possible emergency rescues. Libia González, a meteorologist with Mexico’s national forecasting service, said that the storm would gradually decrease in strength and was expected to become a Category 1 by Sunday morning.

As Hurricane Hilary heads north, Southern California and Mexico are bracing for a rare and powerful storm that could produce dangerous flash flooding and sustained winds that have not been seen for decades. The Category 4 hurricane is so unusual that it has prompted the National Hurricane Center to issue a tropical storm watch for California for the first time in its history. In California, the desert and mountain communities are of particular concern. The National Weather Service warned of five to eight inches of rain for the Coachella Valley, about 120 miles east of Los Angeles. The tropical storm could force numerous evacuations and rescues, as well as deadly runoff that may “rage down valleys while increasing susceptibility to rockslides and mudslides,” the agency said.

Yes, R. Crumb Made a Yoga Mat

During the summer of 2022, I was lucky enough to visit the home of the comics artist couple Aline Kominsky-Crumb and Robert Crumb in a remote town in the south of France. Kominsky-Crumb, in good health at the time of our meeting, died of pancreatic cancer less than six months later. She was, with apologies to Crumb, the more personable of the two. Which brings us to this, Crumb’s touching tribute to his wife in the form of a yoga mat, with art based on an old flier he’d made for one of Kominsky-Crumb’s classes. It’s not something Crumb himself would ever use, but it’s the contrast in their personalities that makes their work so captivating.

Summary Eight of 10 accused convictedSentencing to follow in SeptemberBRUSSELS, July 25 (Reuters) - A Belgian court convicted six men of murder and two others of terrorism charges on Tuesday after the country's largest ever trial involving the 2016 Islamist bombings in Brussels that killed 32 people. The six, of 10 facing charges, were found guilty of murder and attempted murder in a terrorist context for their part in the twin bombings at Brussels airport and third bomb on the city's metro on March 22, 2016. Among those convicted was Salah Abdeslam, the main suspect in the trial over the Paris attacks that killed 130 people. The four are among six accused already convicted in France over the November 2015 Paris attacks. The 12 jury members reached a decision on Monday after two weeks in isolation at the end of a seven-month trial at the former headquarters of NATO specially set up to host the Brussels bombings trial.

CNN —Astronomers have detected a crucial carbon molecule in space for the first time using the James Webb Space Telescope. Methyl cation is considered a key component that helps form more complex carbon-based molecules. The space observatory detected methyl cation in a protoplanetary disk, called d203-506, swirling around a young red dwarf star. ESA/Webb/NASA/CSAWhile methyl cation doesn’t react efficiently with hydrogen, the most abundant molecule in the universe, it reacts well with a wide range of other molecules. But methyl cation wasn’t detected in space until now.

Big Tech is losing its appeal for new graduates and young tech workers starting to look elsewhere to launch their careers. Peers and mentors warn them to avoid the trappings of embarking on a Big Tech career. Based on conversations with students and companies, even students from top schools including Stanford and MIT and junior engineers from top tech companies are "feeling the crunch now," Lerner said. Tech students are applying to jobs in other fieldsWhile students and young engineers are still interested in pursuing tech-focused careers, where they want to put in their time is changing. The impact of waning interest in Big Tech among students on major companies remains to be seen.

Hassan Bouchouf received fines on more than two dozen occasions, according to the town’s fine data. The Essonne police department didn’t respond to questions about the fines received by Assam and Bouchouf. After learning of the April 2020 fines, Assam verbally confronted Dumas on the street later that same month, according to both men and a witness. That prompted a review by the prosecutor’s office, which found that police had issued fines to Assam remotely, that person said. The watchdog is investigating about 10 complaints alleging improper police fines, mostly from Paris, according to a person familiar with the matter.
