Negotiations between Exxon and Pioneer are advanced but have not yet led to an agreement over the acquisition of the largest oil producer in Permian basin. So far, shareholders profited as the share price more than doubled since early 2021 when activist investors publicly pushed for changes. Big Oil is responsible for the bulk of human-induced greenhouse gas emissions and pressure for action is building. "Investor pressure has decreased; they're backtracking... the big investors are enabling this," said climate investment group Follow This founder Mark van Baal. Privately, investors worried if Exxon bowed out of production, someone else would pick up the slack and nothing would be gained for shareholders or energy transfer.

Keith Meister's Corvex Management placed a big new bet on drugmaker Catalent , among other moves in an active quarter for the fund manager. The fund also has a new position in Knife River , a construction materials and contracting company, leading to a $110.3 million holding. It's the seventh largest position in the fund and likely the result of a spin-off. In June, Knife River spun off from MDU Resources , which is the third largest holding in Corvex. Knife River is up more than 17% this quarter.

Aug 10 (Reuters) - Canada's Algonquin Power & Utilities (AQN.TO) on Thursday announced the resignation of CEO Arun Banskota and said it was considering a sale of its renewable energy unit, after activist firms urged action to reduce debt and boost earnings. The decision to divest comes months after the company initiated a strategic review of the renewable energy division, following a push for changes by activist firms including Corvex Management and Starboard Value. Algonquin said it had received interest for the renewable energy unit, but did not provide financial details or timelines for any potential deals. The company said on Thursday JPMorgan (JPM.N) would act as its financial advisor for the possible sale of the renewable energy unit, which includes all of the company's non-regulated operating and development power generation assets. Algonquin also posted a wider second-quarter loss of $253.2 million, compared with a loss of $33.4 million a year earlier.

Business: Algonquin Power is a renewable energy and utility company that provides energy and water solutions and services in North America and internationally. Algonquin Power is a utility company based in Canada with most of its assets in the United States. Instead, the acquisition would have added to an already over-leveraged balance sheet, putting Algonquin Power in an even less stable financial position. So, companies like Algonquin Power will close facilities and retire equipment and build new facilities and buy new equipment that can be added back into the rate base. Algonquin Power is a holding in the fund.

With only a small fraction of the S & P 500 left to report quarterly earnings, investors are now turning their focus to another major hurdle for the markets and economy: the debt ceiling crisis. Earlier this week, we looked back to debt limit crisis of 2011 for potential lessons. The protracted fight ultimately ended in an agreement in early August of that year, but it was a choppy summertime ride for investors. Within the portfolio, Wynn Resorts will report Tuesday, after the closing bell, and Disney will report on Wednesday, after the closing bell. Estee Lauder (EL) and Emerson Electric (EMR) reported earnings before the opening bell.
But PPI readings can predict the direction of future consumer price readings. High interest rates hurt because they increase monthly costs, but it's the lack of supply that contributes to elevated list prices. If we can get inflation down while seeing other economic indicators hold up, the likelihood of a soft landing increases. ET: Industrial Production & Capacity Utilization Looking back It was a tough week for stocks, with the Dow falling 4.4% in its worst showing since June. Under the hood, all sectors finished lower for the week, led down by financials and followed by materials and real estate.
