CNN —Dozens of people detained during protests over Venezuela’s disputed presidential election have been released, according to the local rights group Foro Penal. Video footage from outside one of the prisons shows some of those released hugging loved ones surrounded by cheering crowds. Human Rights Watch has said there are “credible” reports of 24 people being killed during the crackdown on the protests. Jesús Manuel Martínez Medina, a member of the opposition party Vente Venezuela, was detained on August 2 and had been in hospital since October 11. But tens of thousands of tallies published by the opposition suggested a win for opposition leader Edmundo Gonzalez.

My top two picks include Rao's and Classico. Rao's was my favorite flavor but Classico was the best overall choice. In terms of flavor alone, Rao's was the best. But because of its thin consistency, it fell just shy of being the best on the list. With a silky texture and great flavor, the Classico sauce is my overall favorite.

Mexico City Reuters —Eight of 11 justices on Mexico’s Supreme Court have resigned and declined to participate in an election for the court scheduled for June, the court said on Wednesday. Seven of the jurists’ resignations are effective August 31, 2025, while Aguilar will leave office on November 30. The slate of resignations heightens tensions between Mexico’s Supreme Court and the ruling bloc, increasing the risk of a constitutional crisis as Congress and the presidency remain at odds with the judiciary over the reform. In her letter to the Senate on Wednesday, Rios said her resignation “should not be seen as an implicit endorsement of a (reform) framework that remains controversial.”The 11-member Supreme Court will see its number reduced to nine as part of the reform. Three current justices have publicly backed the reform.

Madrid CNN —From exile in Spain, Venezuela’s opposition leader sat down with CNN en Español on Thursday where he spoke about the “nightmare” of his last days in Caracas and his hope to find a solution to Venezuela’s political crisis. In his first television interview since leaving Venezuela, Edmundo González Urrutia explained the role of the Spanish government in his departure from the Latin American country. Venezuela’s opposition and multiple Latin American leaders refused to recognize Maduro’s victory, which sparked deadly protests during which thousands were arrested. On September 18, the Spanish Senate approved by majority a motion presented by the Popular Party urging the Spanish government to recognize González as the elected president of Venezuela. Regarding the official figures, González says that “there is no evidence to prove they [Maduro’s regime] won.”The opposition candidate said that an inauguration in exile has not been considered.

The U.S. lawsuits filed in DC Superior Court Monday shine a spotlight on the supply chains of some U.S. companies operating in the Mexican avocado industry. Reuters could not independently verify the accounts from the local residents or Climate Rights International’s findings. “They have even gone to destroy avocado orchards,” said Claudia Alejandra Sanchez, an activist for Michoacán’s Purepecha Indigenous people. Reuters reviewed copies of letters shared by Climate Rights International. Most of those companies have publicly pledged to adhere to sustainable supply chains in compliance with local laws.

The crowd condemned long-time Venezuelan socialist president Nicolas Maduro after he said he beat opponent Edmundo González Urrutia in Sunday’s election. “It’s really, really, really a congregation that we see all around the world that we showed to the world that it was a fraud and Venezuela deserved freedom,” said Gabriel Duque. Many are hopeful their voices will be heard and they can go back to their home country again soon. If you ask a regular Venezuelan, he’s going to tell you that he wants Maduro to leave because we want to go back to our country. And as soon as we remove Nicolás Maduro, you’re going to see, you’re going to witness all Venezuelans going back to our country because we never want to left,” Morin said.

Thousands of Venezuelans marched across the South American country on Saturday over its contested election, as President Nicolas Maduro told supporters some 2,000 people had been arrested during protests against the results. The published election result sparked widespread allegations of fraud and protests. Subsequently security forces cracked down on protests which Maduro’s government labeled part of an attempted U.S.-backed coup. “This time there will be no forgiveness,” Maduro told supporters at a rally in Caracas, where he said some 2,000 people had been detained in connection to “crimes” during the protests. During the week, some Venezuelans have appeared outside police stations seeking news of their detained family members.

CNN —Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado says she’s in hiding, fears for her life, and can prove President Nicolas Maduro did not win Sunday’s contentious presidential election. “I am writing this from hiding, fearing for my life, my freedom,” Machado wrote in an opinion editorial published Thursday by The Wall Street Journal. Though the country’s Public Ministry later clarified that no arrest warrant had been issued for either opposition figure. The United States is among numerous countries that have called on Venezuelan electoral officials to publish detailed results from Sunday’s presidential election. It's the end of the world as we know it and I feed fine — because Costco has an emergency dinner kit, dubbed online as "the apocalypse bucket," that lasts 25 years. The Readywise Emergency Food Bucket boasts 150 freeze-dried and dehydrated meal servings and has caused a stir on social media. And, crucially for those preparing for an apocalypse, the bucket lasts up to 25 years on the shelf. Some talked about if there was a real apocalypse, it could be difficult to get water to prepare the meals. CNN —When two US avocado inspectors were assaulted and detained at a police roadblock in the Mexican state of Michoacán last month, it sparked a costly international crisis. ‘Green gold’Avocados, the creamy fruit with the industry nickname “green gold,” are big business. Nearly three-quarters of Mexican avocados come from Michoacán, a state along the country’s Pacific coast with a volcanic belt running through it that makes its soil ideal for farming. The office of the Michoacán state prosecutor told CNN last month that they’ve opened an investigation into the incident. In 2022, exports of Mexican avocados were similarly halted for several days after one of the US inspectors working in Michoacán received a threatening phone call.

The incredible oblivion of Judge Marvin Isgur

On a mild Houston day in March 2021, Judge Marvin Isgur prepared to oversee the only case on his docket that morning. In October 2023, the Fifth Circuit Court rebuked Judge David Jones but said that his longtime colleague, Judge Marvin Isgur, had been "unaware" of Jones' inappropriate relationship. "But only Judge Isgur knows what he knew or didn't know about the relationship." Much of this work was in cases before either Judge Isgur or Judge Jones. Isgur can continue to hear the case, he ruled, writing in the December 2023 opinion that lawyers for the creditor "failed to demonstrate much other than that former Judge Jones and Judge Isgur are close friends."
