Burberry, the British luxury brand, on Monday reported falling sales, suspended its dividend and replaced its chief executive, as it grapples with a pullback in spending by consumers on high-end fashion and related goods. Burberry said revenue fell more than 20 percent in its latest quarter, which ended June 29. To bolster its balance sheet, Burberry paused its dividend. The company named Joshua Schulman as its new chief executive, replacing Jonathan Akeroyd, who is leaving the company immediately. The abrupt departure of Mr. Akeroyd, a fashion industry veteran who was previously chief executive of Versace and Alexander McQueen, came less than two and a half years after he was tapped to run Burberry.

"We are seeing a material increase in client demand for committed acquisition financing, which we expect to continue on the back of increasing M&A activity," he said. "We're seeing it in our dialogue with sponsors," Solomon said. On the strategic side, Goldman advised on the roughly $60 billion sale of the oil and gas company Pioneer to Exxon. Solomon said Goldman also expects to benefit from the uptick in demand through its lending capabilities. "When there are more M&A transactions, whether it was financial sponsors or big corporates, there is more financing attached to that," he said.

When it comes to surviving the apocalypse, you could do a lot worse than the West Virginia branch of Fortitude Ranch, a constellation of five survivalist compounds across the United States and one of a growing number of businesses aiming to seize on Americans’ deepening anxieties about the future. Set on a rise above the lush valley cradling the Lost River in eastern West Virginia, about two hours from Washington, D.C., the 50-acre property backs up against the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests. A handsome guesthouse, built of dark timber slats, anchors the property. Two large, boxy dormitories, also timber but more rustic, as well as a bare-bones bunker, are designed to house more than 100 members. On a tabletop sits a 50-caliber rifle, which could be used to take out the engine block of an approaching vehicle.

Most people don’t use mail the way they used to – if they send out mail at all. And, most of all, businesses still depend on the mail to help them reach customers and keep the economy going. A history older than AmericaThe postal service and the United States have grown side by side since before the country’s birth – quite literally. The band The Postal Service was an indie-pop darling near the turn of the century. While stamp prices have doubled in that time, most experts point the finger at technology instead.

CNN —England reached its second successive European Championship semifinals after a 5-3 penalty shootout victory over Switzerland at Euro 2024 on Saturday after the quarterfinal had ended 1-1. Trent Alexander-Arnold scored the decisive penalty to seal the win for England as it booked its spot in the final four having lost in the final at the last edition of the tournament. Nothing could separate the two teams in extra-time and so the game went to penalties. Switzerland’s first penalty from Manuel Akanji was saved by Jordan Pickford and that miss proved pivotal as England’s players dispatched their attempts with aplomb. England will face the Netherlands or Turkey in the semifinals, with the two team’s facing off later on Saturday in Berlin.

London CNN —A twice-stolen painting by Italian Renaissance master Titian, which was once found in a plastic bag at a bus stop in London, sold for $22.3 million at auction on Tuesday. Titian, whose real name was Tiziano Vecellio, made the work in the first decade of the 16th century, at the beginning of his career. Measuring just 18.25 inches by 24.75 inches (46.2 centimeters x 62.9 centimeters), the painting is tiny compared with some of the massive works for which Titian became known later in his life. In 1995, it was stolen from Longleat, the home of Thynne’s descendants, and disappeared for seven years, before it was found at a bus stop in London by art detective Charles Hill. “This picture has captured the imaginations of audiences for more than half a millennia and will no doubt continue to do so,” he added.

The niqab ban is to take place until “the identified threats are eliminated and a new theological conclusion is issued,” deputy head of the Mufti of Dagestan Abdulla Salimov said in a video message Wednesday. The duration of the ban depends on the development of the situation in the region,” he said. Bastrykin blamed “Islamist terrorists” for the deadly shooting in Dagestan.
