Zuckerberg's reveal of Orion late last month has triggered a level of enthusiasm that's unfamiliar in the metaverse. He showed off the gadget — a pair of black, thick-framed AR glasses — to the live audience before placing it on his face. In the meantime, Meta is looking to build on the success of its second-generation Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses. The smart glasses went viral on TikTok during the holiday shopping season, and sales exceeded both companies' expectations. Meta is also opening a pop-up shop to showcase the smart glasses and to get them in front of more consumers.

There are signs across AI models, chips, and new form factors that the market is getting frothy. Investors spent the summer wondering if top AI stocks could continue to justify soaring valuations in the face of absent returns from their massive AI spending. Now, signs have emerged that they're not yet done with generative AI mania. OpenAI reaches dizzying new heightsSam Altman's OpenAI secured a $157 billion valuation after raising $6.6 billion in its latest funding round. In short, a lossmaking startup must justify its $157 billion valuation.

More important: Unlike other face-computing tech I've tried over the years — Google's Glass, Apple's Vision Pro, Meta's own line of Quest goggles — this is one I can actually imagine buying, and using, in real life. Meta's Orion glasses can serve many of the same purposes as a smartphone. Meta's Orion glasses are connected to a wristband that reads muscle movements. If Orion, or any other device Meta makes, becomes the future of computing, then Zuckerberg can operate his business on his devices.

She said she uses the tool "all the time for efficiency gains," — and companies that don't have their own internal AI tool are "already behind the curve." Any sizable company operating without an internal AI tool is already behind the curve. The company's internal AI tool, which is called VaultBot, answers "around 32% of all engineering questions," according to a company announcement from January. Other big tech giants are also developing internal AI tools alongside consumer-facing products.

Aravind Srinivas, the CEO of the AI company Perplexity, said it can be difficult to compete with the Tesla CEO when recruiting. Musk launched his own AI startup, xAI, last year and Srinivas said it has since become one of the highest-paying companies for AI talent — on par with OpenAI. In January, Financial Times reported that Musk's AI venture was in talks to raise $6 billion at around a $20 billion valuation.

Wait. Why is Reddit losing so much money?
  + stars: | 2024-02-27 | by ( Peter Kafka | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +4 min
Last year, according to Reddit's newly filed IPO documents, the company generated $804 million in revenue and lost nearly $91 million. But it's still a lot of money to lose selling a free product. AdvertisementOne big, obvious answer: It has been hiring a lot of engineers and spending a lot of money on their salaries. (Note: There are some dumb stories floating out there about Reddit CEO Steve Huffman getting paid $193 million last year. The best argument I can make in their defense is that Reddit is still adding a lot of users and that more users equals more ad money.

Zuckerberg said a world full of people walking around in VR headsets is "certainly not the future that I'm hoping we get to." Instead, his goal is for the AR glasses to become a smart phone replacement. "That's certainly not the future that I'm hoping we get to," Zuckerberg told neuroscientist and podcast host Andrew Huberman during an episode of Huberman's show that aired on Monday. In the conversation, Zuckerberg said he viewed Meta's new Quest 3 VR headsets as a successor to people's desktop-based workstations. Last year, one former Meta employee told the Verge's Alex Heath that Zuckerberg's ego is intertwined with the glasses.

Linda Yaccarino apparently doesn't have the X app on her home screen. AdvertisementAdvertisementElon Musk might run X from his phone ; Linda Yaccarino, on the hand, might not. She doesn't even appear to have the X app on her iPhone home screen at all. At least that's what a newly surfaced video of the X CEO's car-crash interview at Code Conference appears to show. During a bizarre segment, Yaccarino waved her phone screen to attendees as a way of symbolizing X.

Last week, Meta launched its latest social media venture, a Twitter alternative called Threads. For social media start-ups, attracting an audience is crucial to scaling a new product — but it can be near impossible to lure loyal users away from other platforms. New Threads accounts can easily migrate their information from Instagram, sharing their account data and username between the platforms. They have this pattern now of either launching or creating spin-off social media networks based on what's most popular at the time, then do it under their brand," Caraballo said. "It just is so dystopian to have one single person basically who oversees the entirety of all social media, at least in the Western world," Caraballo told Insider.

Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg remain at each others' throats following the launch of Threads. The squabble has ramped up a notch after Twitter threatened to take Meta to court over Threads. It's getting a bit pitiful for Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg as their feud continues to escalate, following the launch of Threads. In Musk's case, Twitter CEO Linda Yaccarino should bring a level-headedness that her colleague is clearly lacking. These include hashtags, a "following" feed, and a messaging function, which means Threads is still a skeletal project.

Central banks to Wall Street: More pain is coming

New York CNN —Market euphoria in early June, spurred on by a pause in interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve, is well behind us now. What’s happening: It’s been just over a week since the Federal Reserve paused its 14-month regimen of interest rate hikes to fight inflation. The Bank of England, meanwhile, surprised investors by raising interest rates in the UK by an outsized half of a percentage point. Central banks had been making smaller interest rate moves as inflation began to ease off of recent highs. Elsewhere in Europe, central banks in Norway and Switzerland also hiked rates to decade-high levels on Thursday.

Now Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg say they want to settle their scores in a cage fight. Twitter owner and Tesla (TSLA) CEO Musk recently tweeted that he would be “up for a cage fight” with Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta. A spokesperson for the company told Verge: “The [Instagram] story speaks for itself.”It remains unclear whether Zuckerberg and Musk are serious or having a laugh. Quite who would win in a cage fight, however, remains to be seen. Musk is physically bigger than Zuckerberg, but the Meta chief practices jiu-jitsu, the Brazilian martial art, and won gold and silver in a tournament in May.

Mark Zuckerberg says Apple's new headset will make everyone lonelier. But even Meta's headset is, in the end, someone sitting alone on a couch too. As he pushes Meta's efforts to build out this alternative internet, naturally he's been keeping an eye on Apple's $3,500 Vision Pro goggles. That the Vision Pro is an isolating device isn't wrong. But where he's misguided is thinking Meta's vision is any better.

Apple revealed its new headset, the Vision Pro, at its developer conference. But this comparison forgets that the two headsets are built around differing visions of future. Apple this week revealed its new Vision Pro mixed-reality headset, and comparisons were instantly drawn with Meta's own Quest headset. Then the price of Apple's headset, at $3,499, has been compared with the $500 cost of the Quest headset. Apple didn't mention the metaverse once when it unveiled the Vision Pro at WWDC, and barely mentioned gaming.
