My high-achieving high school senior had been avoiding her college applications. AdvertisementMy high school senior is typically a happy, easygoing kid who set her sights on graduating in the top 50 of her class before her first day of freshman year. Many high school graduates in our small city go to the local college for two years, then transfer to a University of California or California State school. It's an affordable route that would relieve the pressure, but she said no; she wanted a four-year college experience. My goal was to talk about college only during those scheduled times unless a deadline needed to be met during the week.

I tried chocolate-chip cookies from the bakery section of Kroger, Safeway, Walmart, and Costco. As a pro baker, I had high expectations — but Safeway and Walmart didn't impress me much. Costco's cookies were soft and not too sweet with lots of chocolate chunks. AdvertisementAs a professional baker, I've probably made thousands of chocolate-chip cookies from scratch. So, I tried chocolate-chip cookies from the bakery section at four national chains near me in Seattle — Costco, Kroger, Safeway, and Walmart.

And we got a lot of bad genes in our country right now. Two law enforcement officials also told NBC News that many of them crossed the border before Biden was president (including during Trump's tenure). In 2020 he praised a nearly all-white crowd at a rally in Minnesota for having “good genes,” pointing to a belief that has been touted by white supremacists called “racehorse theory.”“You have good genes. You have good genes. You have good genes in Minnesota,” Trump said at the 2020 rally.

The mood was cautiously optimistic and the message was simple: Drug decriminalization saves lives. People who used or carried small quantities of illegal drugs in plain sight would no longer face arrest in British Columbia, the nexus of Canada’s opioid crisis, officials announced two years ago. So bold was the experiment, even in a province known for pioneering addiction policies, that its public health officer said she was in disbelief the day had actually come. But decriminalization, a policy introduced as a way of alleviating the opioid crisis, has instead been blamed for deepening it. “Our goal was to save lives,” British Columbia’s premier, David Eby, said at a recent news conference.

I knew I had to quitMy coworker's behavior was making me miserable. AdvertisementI also realized that in my personal life, I'm creative, a little messy, and wear my heart on my sleeve. I don't know what happened in my coworker's life to cause her intense dislike for me. While compassion is not a reason to tolerate bad behavior, I also learned to set clear boundaries for how people treat me. I learned all this by simply stepping back from my job, taking a break, and immersing myself in an entirely new field.

I was drawn to his sense of humor, the way he put words on the page, and the bad boy glint in his dark brown eyes. I lacked confidence; I was in an industry that shredded what little I had, like last night's roast chicken. The man who left trash on the street for someone else to pick up was not a man whose values matched mine. When we met again months after the breakup, I didn't make the same mistake.

I compared Pillsbury's Moist Supreme, Duncan Hines' Perfectly Moist, and Betty Crocker's Super Moist white cake mixes. It's great to make a cake from scratch, but a boxed mix is perfect in a pinch. Alana Al-HatlaniWhite cake is the most versatile of cake flavors, ready to be filled or iced with any flavor. It can also easily be bland, making the mix used crucial to the success of the final cake. All of the cake layers were baked on the center rack of my oven and mixed according to the directions on each box.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — A video taken by a high school student shows an Indiana lawmaker flash a gun to students who were visiting the statehouse to talk to legislators about gun control. Alana Trissel, 17, said state Rep. Jim Lucas asked the students what brought them to the Capitol and began to defend gun rights. A student off camera asked Lucas if he means carrying a firearm. Just over six minutes into the 10-minute video, Lucas said, “I'm carrying right now," and holds open his suit jacket exposing a holstered handgun. It was not immediately clear what kind of gun Lucas was carrying.

For fudgy, chocolaty, and moist brownies, Pillsbury is the way to go. The brownies from Pillsbury and Ghirardelli had a rich, chocolaty flavor but weren't overly sweet. Alana Al-HatlaniWhen I'm making brownies, I aim for a result that's fudgy, rather than cakey, with a noticeable chocolate flavor that isn't overly sweet or dry. They baked off evenly, weren't overly sweet, and had a shiny crackled crust and tender edges that didn't dry out. Ghirardelli perhaps had a better chocolate flavor than Pillsbury but had dry edges.

Hours after a Sikh community leader was assassinated by two masked men in the parking lot of his temple in Canada, a senior Indian security officer sent a drug trafficker he knew a video of the blood-covered victim slumped over in his truck. An hour later, he followed that up with the New York address of another Sikh activist he wanted killed. The trafficker got right on it, according to U.S. prosecutors. He passed on the video and other messages to a purported hit man who had already accepted a $15,000 advance payment for the contract killing on U.S. soil, and suggested there could be more such work. “We have so many targets,” he told the hired gun, who he didn’t know was really an undercover U.S. law-enforcement officer.

I spent the day waiting for news from my family in Israel. I wake up each morning only to remember again my family is being held hostage by terrorists. So maybe you can imagine my surprise the first time I heard my Israeli family called “white colonizers.” When did we become white? Everyone in my large extended family has mobilized alongside me, demanding the safe return of our loved ones and of all the hostages. We’ve been told by the Israel Defense Forces that my family is alive in Gaza, and for now, this gives us a glimmer of hope.

In Dag Hammarskjöld Plaza, just steps away from the United Nations headquarters, pro-Israel demonstrators on Tuesday laid out some 200 pairs of shoes — one for each person held hostage by Hamas. “We’re not satisfied knowing that it’s been 17 days and nothing seems to be moving,” said Orna Neutra, whose son, Omer Neutra, is being held in Gaza. Omer was serving as a soldier in the Israeli military on the border with Gaza when he was abducted, but he grew up in New York. “The world is very divided, but I’m not an expert on that,” Ms. Zeitchik said.

LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) — The death toll for the deadliest U.S. wildfire in more than a century has increased by one, to 99, after Maui County police found additional remains. The remains were recovered on Oct. 12 in Lahaina, police spokesperson Alana Pico said in an email Friday. So far police have identified the remains of 97 people from the Aug. 8 fire that wiped out much of Lahaina, a historic town on Maui's west coast. Powerful winds related to a hurricane passing to Hawaii's south carried embers from house to house and hampered firefighting efforts. More than 2,000 buildings were destroyed, and some 8,000 people were forced to move to hotels and other temporary shelter.

Hawaiian Electric, the state’s primary electric utility company, has acknowledged its power lines started a wildfire on Maui that morning. One caller said cars were being routed into a gated parking lot and were forced to turn around. A third caller told dispatchers they needed to open a road on the south side of town, warning that the blocked exit would result in people dying. One dispatcher told a caller stuck in traffic that emergency workers were busy “because Lahaina has a couple of house fires going on right now.”“If you’re safe, you need to stay there,” she said. Associated Press writers Lisa Baumann in Seattle; Chris Keller in Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Claire Rush in Portland, Oregon, contributed.

A recent report highlighted the pay penalty between teachers and college graduates in other roles. The author found this pay penalty was at a record in 2022 when controlling for education and other factors. There's also a total compensation penalty for teachers when factoring in benefits like healthcare and retirement plans. Before the pandemic, the total compensation penalty was 10.2% in 2019 — with a benefits advantage of 9.0% and a wage penalty of 19.2%. At the same time teachers face a pay penalty, many use what they make to buy supplies and other items for their classrooms.
