How does a songwriter go about turning an iconic movie into a Broadway musical?
“You take the Hippocratic oath: First do no harm,” says Glen Ballard, the co-composer of the new stage version of “Back to the Future,” the beloved 1985 film about a time-traveling teenager.
For the show, which opened in New York last month, Ballard says he and his songwriting partner Alan Silvestri aimed to expand the audience’s relationships with the characters they love.
In movies, he notes, “we see people doing things, but we’re not exactly sure why.
Musical theater can provide that back story and make a great companion, but it is delicate surgery.”
