Gary Wang, a former executive of bankrupt cryptocurrency exchange FTX, who testified against founder Sam Bankman-Fried, attends his sentencing on fraud charges at the United States District Court in Manhattan in New York City, U.S., November 20, 2024. Wang was also ordered to forfeit $11 billion, the same as the other co-defendants. When given the opportunity to address the court, Wang said he was deeply sorry to all the customers and investors in FTX. Roos also noted that Wang was the first FTX employee to walk through the government's door but the last to be sentenced, as the FTX criminal proceedings come to a close. In March, Bankman-Fried was sentenced to 25 years in prison and ordered to pay $11 billion — the harshest punishment from Judge Kaplan.

California health officials on Tuesday reported a possible case of bird flu in a child with mild symptoms. A bird flu test on the child four days after the positive result came back negative. Bird flu has been spreading rampantly in poultry since 2022 in the worst such outbreak the U.S. has ever experienced. California represents the largest share of human bird flu cases in the U.S. so far, with 27 confirmed, not counting the child in Alameda County. In Canada, health officials reported the country's first human case of bird flu last week, in a teenager hospitalized and in critical condition.

The recall last week of two Bay Area officials who both championed progressive crime policies reflects long-held frustrations around a previous increase in violence targeting the Asian American community, experts say. The vote is indicative of Asian Americans’ rightward shift toward tougher crime policies like much of the state, analysts say. From March 2020 to December 2021, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders across the country reported nearly 11,000 hate incidents, including verbal and physical abuse, being coughed at or spat on, and facing discrimination in the workplace. “And a lot of people say, ‘Oh, we’ve moved on from that era.’ I don’t think Asian Americans have,” said James Zarsadiaz, author of “Resisting Change in Suburbia,” whose research focuses on Asian American conservatism. In San Francisco, for example, officials received 60 reports of hate crimes against Asian Americans in 2021, compared with the nine in 2020.

The estate of collapsed crypto exchange FTX has filed a suit against Binance and its former CEO Changpeng Zhao in an effort to wrest back at least $1.76 billion, citing a "fraudulent" share deal. The FTX estate alleges that the share repurchase was funded by FTX's Alameda Research division through a combination of the company's and Binance's exchange tokens, as well as Binance's dollar-pegged stablecoin. Binance denies the allegations, saying in an emailed statement: "The claims are meritless, and we will vigorously defend ourselves." That same month, Binance's Zhao pleaded guilty to charges of violating the Bank Secrecy Act for failing to put in motion an effective anti-money laundering program and for breaching U.S. economic sanctions. In another post cited, he said: "As part of Binance's exit from FTX equity last year, Binance received roughly $2.1 billion USD equivalent in cash (BUSD and FTT).

Caroline Ellison, the star witness in the prosecution of FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried, reported to a low-security federal prison in Connecticut on Thursday, according to a spokesman for the Bureau of Prisons. The federal Probation Department had recommended that Judge Lewis Kaplan sentence Ellison to three years of supervised release, with no time behind bars. Kaplan allowed Ellison to remain free on bail until surrendering to prison either on or after Nov. 7. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison in March and also was ordered to pay $11 billion in forfeiture by Kaplan. Both Bankman-Fried and Ellison had faced the same statutory maximum sentence of about 110 years in prison for their crimes.

But nearly 16 years after Lambert’s murder, the case remains unfinished. (Niroula was fatally assaulted in jail while awaiting a new trial; two defendants previously pleaded guilty, and their convictions weren’t overturned.) Then, he and Niroula began developing a plot to defraud and murder Lambert, the prosecutor said. Four of them, including Niroula and Garcia, were charged with murder, conspiracy, grand theft and other crimes, court records show. Less than a month later, a judge overturned the four murder convictions and set the cases for retrial.

At that point, she set up a makeshift home office and started having multiple calls with the new FTX management. CNN —Donald Trump is pulling one of the most iconic American companies – McDonald’s – into the political arena in the final days of his third White House bid. “I’m going to McDonald’s to work the french fry,” Trump told supporters Saturday at a rally in the Pittsburgh area. A campaign official told CNN that Harris worked at a McDonald’s in Alameda, California, during the summer of 1983 when she was still a student at Howard University in Washington. It’s unclear why Trump has latched on to Harris’ McDonald’s employment or why a visit there was warranted during one of his few remaining weekends before Election Day. “I think my father knows the McDonald’s menu much better than Kamala Harris ever did,” Trump Jr. said.

Donald Trump visited a McDonald's in a key Pennsylvania county on Sunday. Kamala Harris said she once worked at a McDonald's, which is a key part of her biography. For weeks, Trump has attempted to sow doubt — without providing evidence — that Vice President Kamala Harris ever worked at McDonald's, which has become a key part of her biography. Trump senior advisor Jason Miller also cast doubt on Harris' McDonald's employment on Saturday, telling reporters that Trump was going to the restaurant "so that one candidate in this race could have actually worked at McDonald's." But former FTX executive Ryan Salame made an unorthodox update to his profile on the site Thursday, as he began a prison sentence following the collapse of the cryptocurrency exchange. Ryan Salame leaves a Manhattan court after pleading guilty to criminal charges in September 2023. In September last year, Salame pleaded guilty to making tens of millions of dollars’ worth of unlawful campaign donations to causes supported by his boss. Prosecutors said Salame, Bankman-Fried and former FTX engineering chief Nishad Singh used FTX customer funds to donate to political candidates supporting crypto-friendly legislation. Salame pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to make unlawful political contributions and one count of conspiracy to operate an unlicensed money transmitting business.

Almost all of the creditors of failed crypto company FTX will end up profiting from the money they put into the exchange, a federal bankruptcy judge ruled Monday. Ray, who also shepherded Enron through bankruptcy, added that the estate is working to finalize arrangements to make distributions to creditors around the world. FTX previously estimated that it owes creditors around $11.2 billion. According to the plan approved by Delaware bankruptcy Judge John Dorsey, 98% of FTX's creditors will get 119% of the amount of their allowed claim as of November 2022, when the exchange filed for bankruptcy protection. The bankruptcy estate says it will make a separate announcement about the date the payout plan will go into effect and when it anticipates the start of distributions.
