In 2023, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld an earlier ruling stating that Alabama’s district map likely discriminated against Black voters and mandated redrawing the 2nd District. The new area has a majority of Black voters — 47.6%, compared to 45% who are white. His late father, Michael Figures, was an Alabama state senator and his mother serves in that role now. But in an 18-page lawsuit filed in federal court in Alabama, the Justice Department argued that the so-called voter roll purge ran afoul of the National Voter Registration Act, which governs how and when most states can execute large-scale changes to their lists of registered voters. Nonpartisan election law experts say it’s almost always caught when it does happen, and that it isn’t a widespread problem plaguing US elections. Permanent residents who then become naturalized citizens will have had a noncitizen identification number at some point. The DOJ lawsuit comes as Alabama kicked off its general election this month, becoming the first state to start sending out mail ballots on Sept. 11.

The dispute involves land, known as Hickory Ground, that was home to the Muscogee Nation before removal to Oklahoma on the Trail of Tears. The Muscogee Nation is appealing a federal judge’s decision to dismiss their lawsuit over the casino construction. “Hickory Ground is sacred,” Mary Kathryn Nagle, an attorney representing the Muscogee Nation told the three-judge panel. The Poarch Band, which maintains their work preserved much of Hickory Ground, depicted the case as an attack on their sovereignty. Members of the Muscogee Nation marched to the Atlanta courthouse ahead of the arguments.

The number of Republican women in the House has tripled to a record 36, including two nonvoting members. Others involved in the effort to boost GOP women are also hopeful they can reach a new milestone this year. The number of House candidates has dropped overall since 2022, a redistricting year that brought a surge of new candidates. Some of the four people killed in a deadly Alabama shooting had "extensive criminal" histories and might have been killed in a "cowardly" murder-for-hire hit, authorities said Monday. Multiple shooters pulled up in a vehicle, got out and opened fire before they got back inside the vehicle and fled, authorities said. "Some of the individuals that were killed have extensive criminal histories," Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond told reporters. And so that’s that’s part of it." Holloman was from Bessemer and the other three were from Birmingham, officials said.

Georgia is favored over Alabama for the fourth straight time Saturday, but another loss would be three losses in those four games. A loss would turn the conversation from “Kirby Smart had a Nick Saban problem” to “Georgia has an Alabama problem.”Alabama beat Georgia in the SEC Championship Game and earned a spot in the College Football Playoff. It certainly was in last year’s SEC Championship Game and likely will be again this weekend. But an Alabama win would elevate his status early in his tenure, so in that regard, there’s a lot to gain. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer on Monday pressed for Republicans to join Democrats in voting to advance the IVF bill. Democratic Sen. Ron Wyden of Oregon objected, and instead urged their colleagues to support Democrats’ bill during Tuesday’s vote. Another Senate GOP bill aimed at addressing concerns about IVF was introduced earlier this year. On Tuesday, Democratic Sen. CNN —The South Alabama Jaguars racked up the most points scored by an FBS team in over 33 years on Thursday, as they thrashed the Northwestern State Demons 87-10. Remarkably, the Jaguars did so in just 51 minutes, as both head coaches agreed to shorten the fourth quarter to a six-minute running clock. South Alabama’s point total is the highest by an FBS team in a single game since Fresno State beat New Mexico 94-17 in October 1991. South Alabama dominated the running game with 363 yards on the ground to go with six touchdowns from four different players. Four touchdowns from South Alabama stretched the lead to an impressive 52-10 at halftime, but still the Jaguars did not let up.
