The Food and Drug Administration recently approved a heart stent made specifically for infants and young children, a device that could help kids born with certain congenital heart defects avoid a series of open heart operations over their childhoods. In some cases, those defects are treated with stents, which prop open blood vessels, ensuring that blood can properly flow through them. “You can imagine that is less than ideal — they’re too big.”This means that as the child grows older and their blood vessels get bigger, stents have to be replaced, often with open heart surgery, Zahn said. “It’s not unusual to have kids who are going into middle school who’ve had four or five or even six open heart surgeries,” he said. Taking a high dose of ADHD drugs is linked to more than five times greater risk of developing psychosis or mania, according to a new study published Thursday in the American Journal of Psychiatry. The research is among the first to find a relationship between escalating doses of the drugs — amphetamines, in particular — and a greater likelihood of psychotic symptoms. The drugs include Adderall, Vyvanse and generic amphetamines, such as dextroamphetamine. The medium dosage — 20 mg to 40 mg of Adderall, 50 mg to 100 mg of Vyvanse or 15 mg to 30 mg of dextroamphetamine — was linked to a 3.5 times higher risk. There was no increased risk of psychosis with another ADHD drug, Ritalin, which isn’t an amphetamine.

Long Covid continues to evade a clear diagnostic test, researchers reported in a study published Monday in the Annals of Internal Medicine. They found no differences between those with long Covid and those without the condition. Different symptoms were assigned different scores, and a long Covid diagnosis was met if the score reached a level of 12. There was no time cutoff for symptoms and a positive Covid test was not required for diagnosis. Dr. Nisha Viswanathan, the director of the long Covid clinic at UCLA Health, was not surprised with the results based on her experience working with long Covid patients for three years.

Goldman Sachs announced its 2023 class of managing directors Thursday afternoon, giving 608 employees the coveted title. It's a smaller cohort than the bank's 2021 MD class, down 5% amid a dealmaking slowdown. Still, Goldman appears to have taken pains to promote employees in revenue-generating divisions like investment banking and trading. Goldman says the percentage of women it promoted as part of the 2023 MD class sets a record, up 1% from 2021. The European Central Bank has likely pressed pause on its rate hiking cycle, the chief financial officer of Commerzbank told CNBC on Friday. The ECB raised interest rates in July, completing a full year of rate increases. ECB President Christine Lagarde flagged that the central bank could continue or pause rate hikes at its next meeting in September, but definitely will not cut. Commerzbank is the second largest lender in Germany by market capitalization, and its performance is closely linked to the interest rate environment. Tesla, which accounted for more than 60% of U.S. EV sales last year, has the largest network of fast-chargers with almost 18,000 Superchargers. Tesla said earlier this year it would open part of that charging network to EVs from rivals in order to be eligible for a share of funding from $7.5 billion in federal subsidies. June 21 (Reuters) - A former Goldman Sachs (GS.N) banker was convicted of insider trading by a New York jury on Wednesday, after prosecutors said he passed tips about potential mergers to a friend. He was convicted on four counts of securities fraud, conspiracy and obstruction of justice. Goel took the stand in his own defense during the trial and denied that he shared confidential information about the transactions. The case was one of several U.S. Attorney Damien Williams announced last summer as part of an insider trading crackdown. The average sentence in federal fraud, theft and embezzlement cases in the U.S. last year was 22 months in prison.
