Read previewWhen Southwest Airlines announced Thursday it was dropping its unique plane seating system, I was among the (apparently small) group of people who reacted with disappointment. In announcing the policy change, Southwest said their research showed 80% of customers preferred an assigned seating system, while 86% of new customers did. AdvertisementIt also means navigating the chaos that can be found at essentially every other airline's gate besides Southwest. Some families also love Southwest's open seating policy for this reason. But without the open seating, the airline is losing part of what sets it apart — even if that means gaining new customers.

It sounded like a story ripped from a narco thriller: One of the biggest drug lords in Mexico was lured onto an airplane, flown across the border and presented to American federal agents by the son of his former partner in crime. As improbable as it may seem, that is exactly what appears to have happened on Thursday evening, when a Beechcraft King Air turboprop landed at a small municipal airport outside El Paso, and off stepped one of the most wanted men in Mexico: Ismael Zambada García, a founder of the notorious Sinaloa drug cartel. Mr. Zambada García, known as El Mayo, had for decades evaded capture by both Mexican and American officials, living a life of luxurious simplicity in the mountains of Sinaloa — despite the $15 million U.S. bounty on his head. But in the end, U.S. officials said, he was betrayed by an unlikely foe: a son of his closest criminal ally, Joaquín Guzmán Loera, the infamous drug lord known as El Chapo, who is now serving a life sentence in an American federal prison.

I've also started "quiet vacationing," which is when your employer is under the impression you're working but you're secretly taking time off. Although I've considered leaving my job, I'm in a golden cage. Because I spend a lot of time doing nothing, I started quietly taking time off for travel without taking PTO over the past two years. Why are we having regulations about the hours that I'm online or where I'm working from? The world can't function if no one has a job, but your job doesn't need to be your entire life.

A Southwest flight came dangerously close to the Courtney Campbell Causeway in Tampa. A dangerous patternIt's not the first time a Southwest flight has descended to a dangerously low altitude. As that happens, the Federal Reserve is preparing to cut interest rates. A huge burst of infrastructure spending under the Biden administration has taken time to ramp up, but projects both small and large are likely to break ground in earnest in 2025 and 2026. One clear answer: It won’t be the person who shepherded some of the policies that are laying the positive groundwork. President Biden announced on Sunday that he was ending his candidacy for re-election, passing the Democratic baton to Vice President Kamala Harris. White House officials play a relatively minor role in slowing inflation and exert no direct control over interest rates.

He believed Kurtz deserves credit for quickly engaging the media on Friday, apologizing, and promising solutions — even if social media users say the apology didn't come fast enough. The steps to take in a crisisGood crisis management can be boiled down to a few simple yet crucial steps, the two experts told BI. But as disruption from the CrowdStrike outage slowly lessens, many are still concerned by the in-built potential of technology-reliant systems crashing, bringing down all operations with them. Griffin said his company, which provides crisis management software, is now reviewing its plans and policies to prevent the kind of tech failure CrowdStrike experienced. "The bottom line is that crisis management is not a check the box; it is an evolution and requires continuous training, exercising, and learning to improve, especially as the nature of threats and types of incidents evolve."

An American Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft approaches San Diego International Airport for a landing from Phoenix on June 28, 2024 in San Diego, California. American Airlines is forecasting a drop in unit revenue of as much as 4.5% for the third quarter as high demand failed to make up for an industry-wide glut of flights that have forced airlines to slash fares. The carrier's profit fell 46% during the second quarter even though revenues rose. The carrier has been grappling with an industry-wide oversupply of flights and a direct-to-consumer sales strategy it adopted that backfired. It said in an earnings release Thursday that it has "taken swift and aggressive action to reorient its sales and distribution strategy" after complaints from travel agents and customers.

Jain's hypothetical seemed prescient when a quality control issue from cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike caused a worldwide IT outage that halted flights and freight, shuttered retail outlets, and caused hospitals to resort to charting on paper. "Insurers have been worried about something like what happened with CrowdStrike since cloud adoption happened," said Dale Gonzales, chief innovation officer at Axio, a cyber security risk analysis company. Fitch estimates that the number of insured losses will not exceed $10 billion, ending somewhere in the mid- to high-single billions and that the industry largely priced those in. The cybersecurity insurance market did get lucky, in some respects, with the CrowdStrike meltdown. "Cyber events that have more of a physical consequence would be much bigger in size or scope in terms of losses," Glombicki said.

After past trips to Tulum through Cancún and Cozumel, I was excited to see its brand-new airport. Cancún used to be the closest airport to Tulum.
