☆ Spirit Airlines shares plunge on bankruptcy speculation

A Wall Street Journal report Tuesday evening said a bankruptcy filing is expected to happen within weeks, as talks with Frontier Airlines to possibly buy Spirit (SAVE) broke down recently. Because of those discussions, the company said, Spirit is unable able to complete its third-quarter financial report by the prescribed time. While Spirit management tried to move ahead with the Frontier deal, its shareholders rejected the offer and Spirit ultimately agreed to the JetBlue deal instead. It argued such a combination would hurt airline passengers because it would reduce the number of inexpensive airline tickets — putting upward pressure on airfares overall. In January 2024 a federal judge agreed with DOJ’s argument and blocked the JetBlue deal.

Search interest for "Travel Tuesday" rose more than 500% from 2021 to 2023, according to a report published by McKinsey & Company on Thursday. Searches are highest among American and Canadian consumers, but interest is also rising in Australia, the United Kingdom, Netherlands and Spain, according to McKinsey. "European travel companies can anticipate the possibility that Travel Tuesday will become a growing phenomenon in their region," McKinsey's report notes. Searches for "Cyber Monday" are far greater than "Travel Tuesday," but interest in the former is declining, it showed. "But unlike some of the impulse purchases consumers make on Black Friday, travel bookings can require more planning."

London CNN —Ryanair said Monday that it expects airfares during the busy summer travel season to be “materially lower” than last year as the low-cost carrier reported a plunge in profits. Europe’s biggest airline by passenger numbers, comparable in size to Delta Air Lines in the United States, said its average fare fell nearly 15% in the April-to-June quarter from the same period in 2023, to €41.93 ($45.65) from €49.07 ($53.42). Ryanair (RYAAY) attributed that dip in the first quarter of its financial year, in part, to the timing of the Easter break this year, some of which fell over March. The airline previously thought fares would be “flat to modestly up,” he added. The tighter-than-expected supply of jets is forcing airlines to adjust their expansion plans, even as they deal with record demand for air travel. That means that passengers could find fewer available seats and fares that are higher than they would be otherwise. But airlines that use Airbus planes have not been without problems, as a number of A320neo jets have been grounded due to problems with their engines. New York CNN —Titanium that was distributed with fake documentation has been found in commercial Boeing and Airbus jets. Now the Federal Aviation Administration, the aircraft manufacturers and supplier Spirit AeroSystems are investigating whether those components pose a safety hazard to the public. The FAA and Boeing confirmed that they are investigating the matter. Boeing said the questionable parts come from a limited set of suppliers, and tests performed to date have indicated that the correct titanium alloy was used. Airbus has also had problems with some of the engines that have grounded some of its planes owned by different airlines.
