However, weather-related events like Hurricane Helene are generally considered to be outside an airline’s control, meaning passengers have relatively few rights to compensation, experts said. Airlines make concessions in some casesSome airlines are making concessions tied to Hurricane Helene, though they vary by carrier and geography. For example, American Airlines, Delta Airlines and United Airlines have alerts about flooding in the Southeast. American Airlines is also giving leeway to passengers scheduled to travel through Augusta, Georgia, between Sept. 29 and Oct. 4. Plus, policies bought after Helene became a named storm generally won’t cover claims related to it.

AirHelp, an air passenger rights company, released its 2024 AirHelp Score report on the best and worst airports around the world. The report ranked 239 airports from 69 countries, including the United States. To rank the airports, the company used data, partially based on the claims it processes worldwide, to calculate how often flights departed as scheduled in airports across the country and surveyed passengers about wait times, cleanliness, retail stores, and restaurants. Airports were scored based on flights from May 1, 2023, to April 30, 2024. AirHelp determined an airport's final ranking based on three factors:

Airports have many bells and whistles these days. But most travelers would gladly trade them for flights that consistently arrive on time. The passenger rights company AirHelp ranked 239 airports in 69 countries, with an emphasis on the on-time performance of flights operating from May 2023 to April 2024. That measure accounted for 60% of each airport's total score, with on-time performance defined as flights that arrive within 15 minutes of their published arrival times. Passenger opinions of each airport, along with traveler ratings of its food and shops, accounted for the remaining 40% of the score, according to AirHelp's website.

Labor shortagesAs the pandemic swooped in, air travel was among the industries most affected, as more than 90% of flights were grounded. Today, labor shortages exist throughout the economy, but the problem drags on in the air travel sector, where more extensive employee training is usually required. Steven Senne / APOutdated technology and infrastructureThere is near-universal agreement that the infrastructure underpinning segments of America's air travel system is outdated and vulnerable. Rep. Sam Graves, R-Montana, said the incident highlighted "a huge vulnerability in our air transportation system."
