☆ Philippines Closes Schools as Heat Soars to ‘Danger’ Level

The Philippines closed all public schools on Monday and Tuesday because of dangerously high temperatures, moving classes online in a country where schools are typically shut because of tropical storms. Over the past week, average temperatures in many parts of the country topped 40 degrees Celsius, or 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Extreme heat is forecast this week to blanket almost the entire country, with the heat index in some regions rising to at least 42 degrees Celsius, or “danger” level, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration. That designation is the second highest on the agency’s heat index scale. It advised people to avoid exposure to the sun or risk heat stroke, heat exhaustion and cramps.

Ford Motor said on Friday it will recall 169,000 U.S. vehicles to replace rearview cameras and update software and is taking a $270 million charge to address the callback. It was the latest in a series of recalls for rear camera-related recalls by the No. The Detroit automaker in May issued a recall of 422,000 vehicles in the United States because the rearview camera display might fail following an earlier camera recall in January of 462,000 vehicles worldwide. Ford said in the latest recall it has 3,486 warranty reports alleging rear camera failures and reports of two minor crashes but no injuries. Since 2021, NHTSA has been investigating if Ford delayed a 2020 recall of 620,000 vehicles for a rear camera issue and if it recalled enough vehicles.

But now, the thought of supersonic travel has been mooted again – by none other than NASA, which reckons that New York-London flight could take as little as 90 minutes in the future. However, NASA is developing “quiet” supersonic aircraft, called X-59s, as part of its Quesst mission. It’s an airship, and French aeronautics company Flying Whales hopes its hybrid-electric, helium-lift vessel will change the shape of sustainable transport. Flying Whales' airships, pictured here in a render, could access remote locations without roads, railways or airports. That’s why most companies, including Flying Whales and LTA Research, are using helium, which is non-flammable. Prentice is also the founder and president of BASI, a Manitoba-based company specializing in airships adapted for cold climates. Flying Whales expects to test its first airship at the end of 2025, with commercial operations beginning in 2027 once the airship is certified.

WASHINGTON, Jan 27 (Reuters) - Ford Motor Co (F.N) said Friday it is recalling 462,000 vehicles worldwide because video output may fail, preventing the rearview camera image from displaying. The recall expands and replaces a 2021 recall of 228,000 vehicles. NHTSA in August 2021 opened an investigation after Ford in 2020 recalled 620,246 vehicles for another rear camera issue. The investigation is reviewing if Ford had recalled the vehicles in a timely fashion and if it recalled enough vehicles. Ford has issued other rear camera related recalls in recent years including recalling 47,000 U.S. 2021-2022 Bronco vehicles because the rearview camera image may still be displayed after a backing event has ended, which could distract the driver.
