Shai Weiss, chief executive officer of Virgin Atlantic Airways Ltd., on day two of the Farnborough International Airshow in Farnborough, UK, on Tuesday, July 23, 2024. LONDON – Virgin Atlantic CEO Shai Weiss on Monday said the U.K. Labour government's landmark October budget presented a "tax on growth" due to higher rates placed on the aviation industry. "I would call [the Budget] a tax on growth," Weiss said Monday, adding that while it was necessary to cover Britain's budget deficit, it was also important to recognize the contribution of aviation to the wider U.K. economy. For journeys between 2,001 and 5,500 miles, APD will rise to £102 from £90 in economy and to £244 from £216 in other classes. CNBC has contacted the U.K. Treasury for comment.

However, weather-related events like Hurricane Helene are generally considered to be outside an airline’s control, meaning passengers have relatively few rights to compensation, experts said. Airlines make concessions in some casesSome airlines are making concessions tied to Hurricane Helene, though they vary by carrier and geography. For example, American Airlines, Delta Airlines and United Airlines have alerts about flooding in the Southeast. American Airlines is also giving leeway to passengers scheduled to travel through Augusta, Georgia, between Sept. 29 and Oct. 4. Plus, policies bought after Helene became a named storm generally won’t cover claims related to it.

Both regular and enhanced seats will be available for selection at booking, starting in 2025 for flights in early 2026, Southwest said. Southwest AirlinesSouthwest has already announced an improved cabin with tablet holders, charging ports, upgraded overhead bins, and better WiFi. The cabin improvements come as Southwest plans to cut some short-haul flying in favor of more lucrative long-haul operations. Southwest left four airports altogether in August: Bellingham International Airport in Washington, Mexico's Cozumel International Airport, Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport, and Syracuse Hancock International Airport in New York. This means Icelandair passengers can connect in the US on Southwest flights, and vice versa.

China is expected to see a record-level of passenger air travel in 2024, according to the Civil Aviation Administration of China. China is expecting air passenger travel to hit a record in 2024, bouncing past pre-pandemic levels. In the first half of this year, total passenger trips rose nine percent from the same period in 2019, the State Council added, signaling that China's air travel sector has rebounded from the pandemic. The country's projection for 2024 comes in higher than the 619.6 million air passenger trips seen in 2023, according to data released in June by Chinese officials. Meanwhile, the broader Asia-Pacific region's travel sector has seen growth this year thanks to Chinese tourists.

The report ranked 239 airports from 69 countries, including the United States. India's aviation sector remains robust but external pressures pose the biggest risks for growth, according to the CEO of Vistara Airlines. Aviation demand in India is "still progressive" and headed in a positive direction, Vinod Kannan told CNBC in an exclusive interview. However, factors such as fuel costs as well as the strong U.S. dollar could impact growth, he added. The domestic air passenger traffic in India in the financial year ended March 2024 is estimated to stand at $154 million — up about 13% year-on-year, according to credit rating agency ICRA. "Outlook on the Indian aviation industry is stable, amid the continued recovery in domestic and international air passenger traffic, and relatively stable cost environment and expectations of the trend continuing in fiscal year 2024-25," it said.

In recent months, the United States and China have been steadily increasing flights between the countries, that are still far below 2019 levels. The United States lifted the unprecedented travel restrictions for fully vaccinated international visitors starting in November 2021, including from China. The United States rescinded a separate requirement air travelers test negative before arriving in June 2022. COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — Gale-force winds and floods struck several countries in Northern Europe as the region braced for more heavy rain on Friday. In Scotland, at least two people were reported dead and authorities searched for a man thought to be trapped in his vehicle. On Friday, the Met Office issued a new “red” warning for parts of eastern Scotland for further flooding throughout Saturday. Water levels were expected to begin dropping again on Saturday morning, Swedish meteorologists said. On Germany’s North Sea coast, the high winds had the opposite effect to the flooding on the Baltic coast, pushing the water further out and leading to very low water levels.

The marketing failure that's going to kill us all

A good example of bad climate marketing comes from the Irish budget airline Ryanair. Carbon offsets involve contributing money to a project that will help avoid, reduce, or remove carbon emissions from the atmosphere, such as planting trees or building wind farms. Some of the most successful corporate efforts at climate marketing place more emphasis on consumers' personal concerns. According to the International Energy Agency, global carbon emissions reached a record high last year. The more you focus on what everyday people care about, Berger said, the more effective your marketing campaign will be.

A Qantas plane takes off from Kingsford Smith International Airport, following the coronavirus outbreak, in Sydney, Australia, March 18, 2020. REUTERS/Loren Elliott Acquire Licensing RightsCompanies Qantas Airways Ltd FollowSYDNEY, Oct 18 (Reuters) - Australia will ask its competition watchdog to monitor domestic passenger flights in a bid to boost competition in a sector dominated by national carrier Qantas, which is under scrutiny for alleged anti-competitive behaviour. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) will monitor prices, costs and profits in the domestic air passenger sector, according to a joint statement from Treasurer Jim Chalmers and Transport Minister Catherine King on Wednesday. "A competitive airline industry helps to put downward pressure on prices and deliver more choice for Australians facing cost-of-living pressures," the statement said. "ACCC market scrutiny will help ensure airlines compete on their merits, bring to light any inappropriate market conduct should it occur, and provide continued transparency at a time when new and expanding airlines are still trying to establish themselves."
