Getting F-16s and long-awaited weaponsDelays in getting Western equipment have long been a source of frustration for Ukraine. Western allies lifted some restrictions in May, allowing Ukraine to strike Russian troops building up at its borders. AdvertisementTaking the war inside RussiaThe biggest change this year is that Ukraine altered the dynamics of the conflict by launching a surprise attack on Russia's Kursk region. In just two weeks, starting on August 6, Ukraine claims its forces took more territory in Kursk than Russia had since the beginning of 2024. Ukraine is "losing territory and may suffer a breakthrough," Benjamin Friedman, policy director at the Defense Priorities think tank, told BI.

Russia has increasingly fired glide bombs at Ukrainian territory in its invasion of the country. AdvertisementBut Russia has not been using the bombs at the same scale against Ukrainian forces that crossed the border into Russia earlier this month. Russia used 750 glide bombs on Ukrainian cities and villages last week alone, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy Sunday. It's also fewer than the 50 glide bombs Russia has reportedly been firing daily into Ukraine's Sumy region, which neighbors Kursk. But these were relatively isolated incidents rather than something that was happening as a result of a new strategy, such as using glide bombs in Kursk.

Ukrainian troops released footage appearing to show the total destruction of a Russian brigade. Ukrainian troops refer to the area as the 'road of death' because of Russia's continued losses in the region. Further clips appear to show Russian soldiers attempting to escape from strike drones, clambering out of their tanks and hiding behind mounds of soil. The warriors from the 72nd Mechanized Brigade, with the help of drones, turned a convoy of russian tanks and IFVs into a scrap metal army. The route in to the village was dubbed the "road of death" due to the number of Russian soldiers killed.

CNN —Ukraine’s Defence Intelligence claims it has confirmed the use of Starlink satellite communications by Russian forces in occupied areas. It says it has intercepted conversations which indicate the Starlink terminals are being used to provide internet access to Russia’s 83rd Air Assault Brigade operating in the Donetsk region. Elon Musk’s SpaceX company, which owns Starlink, says it does not do business of any kind with the Russian government or its military. Starlink, which uses a network of satellites to provide broadband, says its service will not work in Russia, although the statement didn’t address whether it would work in occupied Ukraine. As Ukrainian submarine drones strapped with explosives approached the Russian fleet, they “lost connectivity and washed ashore harmlessly,” Isaacson writes.

Ukrainian soldiers from the 82nd Air Assault Brigade described how the British Challenger 2 tank has helped give them an edge in the fighting against Russian forces. The UK announced in January 2023 that it would provide Ukraine with 14 Challenger 2 tanks as part of a military aid package. Zelenskyy praised Ukraine's wins in the Black Sea, noting they'd "be in history textbooks." Ukraine's success in the battle for the Black Sea is what will be in history textbooks, though it's not discussed as often now." Ukraine's forces followed up that attack with a later strike on the Black Sea Fleet headquarters. AdvertisementAdvertisementSevastopol has been the longstanding headquarters of the Russian Black Sea fleet, a key part of Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014. Whether or not those victories in the Black Sea are sufficient to call the counteroffensive a success is debatable.

Ukraine is adding an extra piece of armor to its British Challenger 2 tanks to protect a weak spot. AdvertisementAdvertisementUkraine appears to have added extra armor to its British-made Challenger 2 to protect a weak spot on the 69-ton battle tank. The UK sent just 14 of the powerful tanks to Ukraine in January, used exclusively by Ukraine's powerhouse 82nd Air Assault Brigade. AdvertisementAdvertisementIn early September, footage appeared to show the first, and so far only, Challenger 2 tank to be destroyed in Ukraine. Other analysts have noted that quantity is more important than quality when supplying weaponry to Ukraine, including Challenger 2 tanks.

Russia sent elite units to southern Ukraine to try to stop Ukraine advancing, a think tank said. It said Ukrainian armored vehicles appeared to have breached Russia's last line of defense. AdvertisementAdvertisement"Russian forces currently defending in western Zaporizhia Oblast have been unable to prevent Ukrainian forces from making gradual but steady advances since mid-August," it said. The ISW said it could not yet determine whether Ukrainian troops had completely broken through that last line of defense. A Ukrainian soldier, meanwhile, described Russian troops in the area to The Wall Street Journal as "poor quality" and "earth movers."

Troops appear to have used armored vehicles to get past trenches and "dragon's teeth" defenses. They were reacting to a video showing Marder and Stryker infantry fighting vehicles pushing towards Russian lines. Crucially, he said it showed the vehicles behind Russia's fearsome layers of defenses meant to keep heavy vehicles out. Stryker armored fighting vehicles are versatile eight-wheeled weapons that were sent to Ukraine by the US in January. Marder infantry fighting vehicles, which resemble light tanks and can carry up to six people, were sent to Ukraine by Germany several months later.

Get to Cover. New soldiers were rotating in, and others were rotating out. Then orders came in, and several Ukrainian soldiers went to their SPG-9 recoilless rifle. They repeated the process several more times, removing spent propellant charges from the rear of the gun, tossing them aside and sliding in fresh projectiles. Russia has sent elements of an elite paratrooper division to the south of Ukraine, reports say. Ukraine recently sent its powerhouse 82nd Air Assault Brigade into battle in Robotyne, which helped it achieve its breakthrough, per Forbes. Using the 76th in the south suggests Russia lacks reserves, experts sayElements of Russia's elite 76th Guard Air Assault Division have been deployed in key parts of Ukraine throughout the conflict. Russia's decision to redeploy elements of these units to the south suggests that Russian forces lack sizable operational reserves, the ISW said. The units sent to Robotyne appear to have been moved from the Kremmina area in eastern Ukraine, ISW noted.

Ukraine's arduous counteroffensive is "far from over," General David Petraeus has said. Nonetheless, with enough pressure the Russian line can "suddenly break," he wrote. Faced with this, even the US would struggle, Petraeus told CNN. "Ukraine is applying pressure on their opponent until something breaks, at which point they will commit their reserves and strike," Petraeus and Kagan wrote. "When the conditions are right, they're picking their way through these minefields now," Petraeus told CNN.

Ukraine's elite 82nd Air Assault Brigade appears to have joined its counteroffensive fight. Ukraine's 82nd Air Assault Brigade created a stir when it joined the attack. The area has been the scene of intense fighting and where Ukraine says it has made small gains, Ukraine's Kyiv Post reported. This would mean that the 82nd battalion alone would have half of Ukraine's best infantry armored vehicles from its NATO allies, the Kyiv Post reported. And the Kyiv Post reported that the infantry vehicle component only began training in March.

Ukraine's 82nd Air Assault Brigade has officially joined the counteroffensive against the Russian invasion forces, the Kyiv Post reports. Leaked documents from earlier this year revealed the 82nd Brigade was a formidable unit with about 150 NATO-supplied armored infantry carriers. Forbes called the 82nd Brigade "almost comically powerful" as it represents half of its best NATO-delivered infantry armored vehicles. The 82nd Brigade, and its sister air-assault unit, the 46th Brigade, had previously been held in reserve. The 82nd Brigade is reportedly active in the village of Robotyne, in the southern Zaporizhzhia Region of Ukraine.

A video shows a Russian T-90 tank falling off a small cliff and becoming stuck. Ukraine has been rigging cheap drones with explosives and striking expensive Russian equipment. The next shot shows the vehicle being struck by a drone, which causes it to explode. The cost of a single FPV drone tends to be around $400 to $500, or roughly the cost of a new Playstation. [1/2] Ukrainian service members fire a mortar towards Russian troops outside the frontline town of Bakhmut, amid Russia's attack on Ukraine, in Donetsk region, Ukraine March 6, 2023. Reuters reporters heard dozens of shells being fired from Ukrainian positions near Chasiv Yar and Bakhmut on Thursday alone. Ihor, a 36-year-old soldier at the mortar position, said they had been targeted by air strikes, mortar fire and tank shelling. In the next door town of Chasiv Yar, a volunteer evacuation team drove a minibus through potholed lanes between small homes, many of them in ruins as artillery shelling shook the ground. On the side of the next street a man prepared a fire to make shashlik while a woman sat nearby chatting.

Eight Russian armored vehicles lie smouldering thanks to one Ukrainian soldier, Ukraine's MOD says. He took out five tanks and three other vehicles in a single day in Donetsk, according to Ukraine. A social media post of the apparent feat included praise for the US-provided Javelin missiles used. During the fighting, the paratrooper took out the five tanks, as well as three infantry fighting vehicles known as BMPs. The Ukrainian MOD's video post was accompanied by text that said: "American weapon in Ukrainian hands works wonders."
Of at least 36 missiles that Russia fired about 16 were shot down, the air force said, a lower rate than normal. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, French President Emmanuel Macron and U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris are among many top officials attending the Munich Security Conference. As Russian troops massed on Ukraine's borders, Western leaders in Munich urged President Vladimir Putin not to invade and warned of dire consequences if he did. Russian leaders will be notable by their absence at the conference, which runs until Sunday, but senior Ukrainian officials are expected to address it. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said in his nightly video address his priority was to hold off Russian attacks and get ready for an eventual Ukrainian counter-offensive.
Following a pattern of heavy bombardments after Ukrainian battlefield or diplomatic gains, Russia launched 36 missiles in the early hours, Ukraine's Air Force said. The Russian missiles triggered air-raid sirens and landed across Ukraine, including at the Kremenchuk refinery, where the extent of damage was unclear. Ukraine said the barrage included three KH-31 missiles and one Oniks anti-ship cruise missile, which its air defences cannot shoot down.
