Did Thursday’s debate change voters’ minds about who should be president? Times Opinion asked our columnists and contributors to weigh in on who won and lost last night, and we’ve asked our readers to do the same. “If the purpose was to talk policy and answer the moderators’ questions, Biden won. “Is this seriously the best we have? A convicted felon and an old guy who has a bad cold and looks exhausted?” asked Danielle Aiko Werts of Socorro, N.M. “Who let this go forward?

Anyone expecting the Japanese royal family’s new Instagram account to generate memes or showcase a new side of the world’s oldest continuous monarchy should lower their expectations. Just some royals politely posing for pictures in their usual, formal way. The new Instagram page for Japan’s Imperial Household Agency — its first on any social media platform — posted its first image early Monday morning. By Tuesday evening, it had uploaded 19 more and collected nearly half a million followers. The page mostly shows Emperor Naruhito, Empress Masako and sometimes their daughter, Princess Aiko, standing up, sitting down or bowing at formal events over the past three months.

Read previewSome fans of Ariana Grande are calling out Big Sean and Jhené Aiko following the release of her new album, "Eternal Sunshine." Grande admonished her fans in an Instagram Stories post on Saturday, just one day after the album hit streaming sites. "Eternal Sunshine" is Grande's seventh album and her first one since 2020, prompting substantial fanfare from her fans. Business Insider's Callie Ahlgrim reported that the album's name derives from Michel Gondry's 2004 film "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind." Big Sean has been romantically linked to both women — and Grande's album shares the same name as a song from Aiko's 2014 album, "Souled Out."

Eugene Hoshiko/Pool via REUTERSTOKYO, Feb 23 (Reuters) - Japanese Emperor Naruhito on Thursday gave his first public birthday address since ascending the throne almost four years ago, after delays due to the COVID-19 outbreak, and urged support for people struggling with inflation and the pandemic. Naruhito, who turned 63, was crowned emperor on May 1, 2019, after his father Akihito became the first emperor to abdicate in two centuries. Public birthday appearances by the emperor are an annual tradition but the event had been suspended from 2020 due to the pandemic. "I feel very happy to have my birthday celebrated before the public for the first time," Naruhito said.

PHILIP FONG/Pool via REUTERSTOKYO, Jan 2 (Reuters) - Japan's Emperor Naruhito on Monday gave a New Year's address and greeted members of the public for the first time in three years as the country eases COVID-19 pandemic restrictions amid a year-end surge in infections. Naruhito, 62, was joined by other royals, including his wife, Empress Masako, 59, and his father, Emperor Emeritus Akihito, 89, who abdicated in 2019. About 9,600 people, split into six groups over the course of the day, were chosen by lottery to attend the New Year's event, a much smaller number than the tens of thousands that usually gather for the traditional royal greeting. Since the start of the pandemic, the country has registered about 30 million infections and almost 60,000 deaths.
