Evacuation orders and an alarm sound were mistakenly sent to cellphones of residents all over Los Angeles County and beyond on Thursday afternoon. The text message warning was sent to millions of people around 4 p.m. local time, including in places far from where wildfires are burning out of control. “An EVACUATION WARNING has been issued in your area,” the text message read, in part. “My entire area just got an evacuation Amber alert, which turned out to be for West Hills, not Beverly Hills,” a user wrote on X. As if we’re not already anxiety-ridden enough.”“I got an evacuation warning phone alert in DTLA for a fire 20+ miles away,” another X user wrote.

At just 30 and 27 years old, Quinn and Brittney Sturgis, a married couple serving in the Air Force, are on track to retire in their early 40s — if they choose to. "We're not necessarily focused on trying to hit a certain number by a certain age to completely retire," says Quinn, an Air Force pilot. Both officers are stationed at Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield, California, earning just over $263,000 in combined salary and paid military benefits. Of course, military service comes with trade-offs. The rest of their contributions are split between individual Roth IRA accounts, a taxable brokerage account and a 529 college savings plan.

Times Insider explains who we are and what we do and delivers behind-the-scenes insights into how our journalism comes together. In August, Julia Jacobs visited a Mediterranean-style mansion in Agoura Hills, Calif., the backdrop of “The Golden Bachelor.” The show is a spinoff of the popular “Bachelor” reality TV franchise, with a surprising twist: Participants are at least 60 years old. In the show’s premiere on Sept. 28, viewers met Gerry Turner (pronounced Gary), a 72-year-old widowed retiree from Indiana looking for romance, and nearly two dozen women hoping to court him on national television. Their relationships unfold on-air every Thursday. Audiences seem to be loving it: The series premiere was the most watched debut for a “Bachelor” franchise season since 2021 and the most watched of any “Bachelor” premiere on the streaming platform Hulu.

Editor’s note: Oona Hanson is a parent coach in private practice and a family mentor at Equip, an eating disorder treatment program. In my work supporting parents and guardians whose children have eating disorders, the process of navigating school nutrition units can be particularly fraught. Most teachers don’t realize that delivering a nutrition lesson can be “leading an expedition into a minefield,” according to Zoë Bisbing, an eating disorder therapist in New York City. Nutrition curriculum has an effect on students, but families play a major role in helping children learn about food. Following typical “healthy eating” guidance to try to lose weight can mean “missing much-needed nutrition at a time when teens have a high need for calories and nutrients for growth and development.”Triggering an eating disorder isn’t the only unintended impact of nutrition lessons.

And Mr. Adams, an executive director in cybersecurity for Comcast, was tied down by his job. The pandemic, too, had changed the landscape: Mr Adams was largely working remotely and was free to move. “We thought, are we going to be able to swing it?” Ms. Adams said. “We needed to be near Pepperdine,” Ms. Adams said, adding that other requirements included ample parking (the family has several cars), storage space and a yard. They also wanted at least three bedrooms, two bathrooms and enough space for Mr. Adams to work from home.
