New York CNN —US stocks closed at record highs on Friday, notching their best week all year after Donald Trump’s victory in the US presidential election. Both the S&P and the Dow had their best week in a year. Investors are responding to how Trump’s victory might transform the business landscape in the US. Markets had a milestone week as investors adjusted to Trump’s victory and started to evaluate the policies touted by his campaign, such as his proposal to lower the corporate tax rate. Markets move based on investor sentiment, and the historic gains this week are not certain to last.

The wealth of the world’s 10 richest people also soared by a record amount, according to Bloomberg’s Billionaire Index. The biggest gainer was Elon Musk, the world’s richest person and one of Trump’s most outspoken and dedicated supporters, whose wealth jumped $26.5 billion to $290 billion Wednesday, according to Bloomberg. Truth Social owner Trump Media & Technology Group, Trump’s social media company, also cashed in with shares skyrocketing in value after CNN and other media outlets projected Trump won. Trump is the dominant shareholder in the conservative social media company, which has scant revenue and is losing money. The president-elect’s 114.75 million shares were worth about $5.3 billion briefly based on those early gains, up from $3.9 billion when trading ended on Election Day.

Truth Social owner Trump Media & Technology Group, Trump’s social media company, is skyrocketing in value this morning after CNN and other media outlets projected Trump won the election. Trump is the dominant shareholder in the conservative social media company, which has scant revenue and is losing money. When a stock price starts to rise sharply, traders who bet against it are forced to buy back the stock to limit their losses. That’s despite the fact that Trump Media makes very little revenue and Truth Social is a relatively small player in social media. Trump Media disclosed Tuesday afternoon that its third-quarter revenue dipped 5% to just $1 million.

New York CNN —Former President Donald Trump’s social media company is on fire on Wall Street. Up until very recently, Trump Media & Technology Group had been in meltdown mode. Its share price dropped to a record low of $12.15 on September 23, marking a stunning 82% crash from its high. Trump Media did not announce a sudden revenue stream or a flashy new product that could explain the move. “At today’s stock price of about $25, the stock is overvalued by 1,000% or so,” Ritter said, “suggesting a 90% drop will eventually occur.”

Yet investors remain unrelentingly bullish, bidding the US stock market further into uncharted territory. That’s the strongest start to a year since 1997, according to FactSet, when the US economy was surging during the dotcom boom under President Bill Clinton. Kristina Hooper, chief global market strategist at Invesco, said the “very impressive” market performance has been driven by “continued resilience” in the US economy and enthusiasm over Fed rate cuts. US stocks retreated Tuesday after the White House warned that Iran is preparing to launch an imminent ballistic missile attack on Iran. “The Iran report is the thing scaring everyone right now,” said Michael Block, co-founder and chief operating officer at AgentSmyth.

Investors swiftly penalized Trump’s social media business following the former president’s widely panned debate performance. Trump Media initially spiked 10% that day, before fizzling and ending in the red. Trump Media has at times become a way for traders to bet on the political fortunes of Trump and the chances he returns to the White House. Trump is not only the dominant shareholder in Trump Media, he is the most popular user on Truth Social, the company’s only significant product. The lock-up restrictions preventing Trump from selling his 114.75 million shares in Trump Media are set to expire later this month.
