Newly released federal data shows the US tech workforce is younger than the workforce at large and getting younger still. Tech workers under 25 are becoming more common, while the proportion of workers older than 40 shrinks. There's an age-old perception that tech workers should be young so they can move fast and break things. One of the top qualifications to land a tech job, it seems, is to possess a birth certificate dated after 1990. Women make up just 22% of tech workers — the same proportion of jobs they held in 2005.

Chatterton, 27, recalls one of her first jobs after graduating college, as a marketing operations role at a small tech startup in Chicago, Illinois. Conventional wisdom holds that older women have the most to contend with in regards to ageism, or unfair treatment based on a person's age. However, new research from LeanIn and McKinsey & Co. suggests that younger women are more susceptible to ageism in the workplace than their older colleagues. Ageism impacts older employees at fairly similar rates for women and men. Yet women in their 20s and 30s report much higher instances of ageism than older women and their young, male colleagues.

The NewsAs more places legalize marijuana, policymakers and health officials have worried about the health risks that the drug may pose to adolescents. But a new study suggests that an additional demographic is at risk: seniors. The study, published Monday in JAMA Internal Medicine, found that after Canada legalized marijuana, the number of emergency room visits for cannabis poisoning rose sharply among people ages 65 and older. Poisonings doubled after Canada legalized sale of the cannabis flower, and then tripled just 15 months later, when Canada legalized the sale of edibles. Stall said, and showed that more attention needed to be paid to drug use by seniors, and to the health effects.

The question for some of us is, why some people want to keep working decades beyond retirement age? So last October, at the age of 80, Murray ended her retirement and got a job giving out samples at Costco. Forecasters expect that cohort of older , working Americans to double over the next decade. “More people are working at desk jobs that don’t require much physical labor,” said Gal Wettstein, a senior research economist at the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College. “That’s people who are changing jobs, younger workers and non-college educated workers.” Older workers tend not to change jobs, and they’re more likely to have a college degree.
