Astronomers have never detected dark matter, but they believe it makes up about 85% of the total matter in the universe. Meanwhile, the existence of dark energy helps researchers explain why the universe is expanding — and why that expansion is speeding up. A prime example is the European Space Agency’s wide-angle Euclid telescope that launched in 2023 to investigate the riddles of dark energy and dark matter. Euclid this week delivered the first piece of a cosmic map — containing about 100 million stars and galaxies — that will take six years to create. These stunning 3D observations may help scientists see how dark matter warps light and curves space across galaxies.

She found exactly what she was looking for in the NBC missing persons procedural drama “Found,” which returns for its sophomore season on Thursday. That story cited the Black and Missing Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to bringing awareness to missing people of color. Okoro Carroll did not consult the organization until the end of the first season, but said the founders have given their seal of approval. Okoro Carroll began researching the role that public relations play in missing persons cases, which the Department of Justice has said can add up to 600,000 new missing people every year. Opinion: Credibility is the key at Trump trial

The idea that Cohen talked to Trump about Daniels on that call “was a lie,” Blanche alleged. Moreover, my experience has been that juries don’t decide based upon one moment — they base their judgment on an overall view.”There were allegedly three parties aware of the scheme to conceal the real reason Trump paid Cohen more than $400,000 in supposed legal fees: Trump, Cohen and Allen Weisselberg, then-chief financial officer of the Trump Organization. “Weisselberg could be the linchpin to validate Cohen’s claims about Trump agreeing to reimburse him through Trump Organization, as a business expense,” wrote attorney Stacy Schneider. Trump seems to be tempted to go mano a mano and show that he is better fit to be commander-in-chief. The new requirement for GOP politicians wanting to demonstrate their loyalty to Trump seems to be visiting the Manhattan courthouse where he’s on trial.

An Earthquake Startled the Northeast

A 4.8-magnitude earthquake sent tremors from Philadelphia to Boston this morning, rattling New York City skyscrapers and surprising many East Coasters. The earthquake struck at 10:23 a.m. Eastern, with an epicenter near Whitehouse Station, N.J. — about 40 miles west of New York City — according to the United States Geological Survey. It was the largest quake within 250 miles of Manhattan in more than 30 years, and the third largest since the data began in 1957. New Yorkers are more familiar with much smaller tremors, which usually go unnoticed in a city full of rumbles. The city is also filled with old brick buildings, and officials said they remained concerned about the aftereffects of the quake.

The high-stakes hearings nearly 900 miles apart speak to the extraordinary entanglement of the 2024 election and Trump’s legal quagmire that now spans multiple presidential elections. Thursday will not even be the first time this week that the ex-president’s legal plight is playing out in two separate cities. The ruling could remove Trump’s capacity to do business in New York — the city where he made his name. As the expected first criminal trial, the New York case could still have important political implications. But the impact of Trump’s legal problems on a wider electorate is still to be tested.

Apple and Meta are hoping that this virtual world will be so compelling that you won't just visit. Apple Vision Pro AppleThese are all, as the IT people say, known issues. When people adapt to a perceptual change for long enough, the real world starts to look wrong in the opposite direction. The economy can still grow without driving inflation, and that would be an ideal scenario for the stock market. AdvertisementAdvertisementThe latest economic data suggests a type of Goldilocks scenario is about to play out in both the economy and stock market. AdvertisementAdvertisement"We think the economy started a productivity growth boom in early 2016 that was interrupted by the pandemic. This year, our growth is being driven by productivity... productivity driven growth brings inflation down, it's good for earnings, but it does drive yields up. A fit and ruddy 19-year-old with blond hair and a sheepish smile, James Henderson is tanning on a beach in Magaluf, a town on the Spanish island Mallorca that has long been the destination of choice for young Britons in search of a boozy holiday in the sun. Asked to recount the revelry of the day before, he grins like a man who has just completed a decathlon and is pretty psyched about his performance. There was a few hours of “pre-drinking,” as he put it, at his hotel, then on to Punta Ballena, a crammed and gritty strip of pubs, tattoo parlors and lap dance emporiums that bursts with action until dawn every summer day. By the time he and his vacation buddy headed to bed, at 3 a.m., they had each knocked back roughly 20 drinks over the course of 15 hours. There are also G-rated home comforts, like kebab shops, Yorkshire pudding and pubs, all at strikingly affordable prices.

Around this time last year there was a lot of debate, some of it ill tempered, about who deserved blame for soaring inflation. Now most of that is gone, replaced by a debate, some of it ill tempered, about who deserves credit for the rapid decline in inflation. That is, they argue that inflation is falling because the economy is finally unsnarling the kinks created by the Covid-19 pandemic and its aftereffects. Here’s the reason for the argument: As I documented the other day, as of late last year most economists expected Fed rate hikes — which have driven mortgage rates to a 21-year high — to reduce inflation. But they expected this disinflation to come at the cost of a substantial rise in unemployment.

New York CNN —US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen ate a “magic mushroom” on a recent trip to Beijing, but the aftereffects don’t sound that special. CNN’s Erin Burnett spoke to her Monday, asking about the “mushroom experience” that set off a social media frenzy and dramatically boosted business for a Yunnan restaurant chain, where Yellen ate the local jian shou qing. I learned that later,” Yellen said about the group dinner that clarified that she didn’t organize nor did she do the ordering. Yellen’s July trip to the Yunnan restaurant chain, called Yi Zuo Yi Wang (In and Out), garnered attention for the highly sought-after mushroom prized for its unique properties. Rather, the chain specializes in Yunnan food, a popular regional cuisine from part of southwestern China that borders Vietnam, Laos and Myanmar.

Hübl: First off, trauma often gets conflated with adversity itself, but it’s actually how our nervous system responds to a distressing experience. Our nervous system is trying to keep us safe. When we go through an overwhelming experience that the nervous system cannot process, we lose our relationship to life in that moment. These reactions can get frozen into our nervous system so that triggering circumstances stir up trauma responses. This helps me train my nervous system to strengthen pathways for self-awareness, creating an inner mindfulness.

New research is exploring another dimension to the puzzle of how people experience this infection: genes. Hollenbach says it’s the job of HLA molecules to present pieces of proteins to the immune system so they can be recognized if they’re ever encountered again. The researchers then took a closer look at this group to see if there were any similarities in the genes that coded for their HLA molecules, and there were. So folks with these HLA molecules likely already had some preexisting immunity against SARS-CoV2 and were able to clear the virus before it caused symptoms, Hollenbach said. Genes, Zeberg said, are likely only one part of reason why someone develops long Covid, and there are probably a slew of genes involved.

With an agreement on the debt ceiling easing concerns on the macro level, the aftereffects of avoiding default could pose new challenges for bond exchange-traded fund investors. "Now [The Fed] is going to hit it with trillion dollars of sales that will make short-term Treasury rates rise," he said. Additionally, the trillion dollars taken out of the regional banking system and placed into money market funds added pressure on big and systemic banks, he said, increasing the Fed's constraint. As money market yields continue to rise, Lutnick said he sees capital continuing to flow out of equities and into money market funds and Treasury bond ETFs. "You're going to see the stock market go sideways, but the bond market is going to continue to draw in money and get a lot of power," Lutnick said.

Gale Brewer, a New York City council member, pointed to the growing number of unregulated vape shops in the city — using her own Upper West Side district as a barometer. NEW YORK, May 19 (Reuters) - Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell said Friday that the aftereffects of recent banking sector troubles takes some pressure off the U.S. central bank to raise rates. Southwest said that it lost about $350 million in ticket sales for January and February because people have avoided bookings on the airline.
