Boeing's 737 safety mess just got worse
  + stars: | 2024-10-01 | by ( Aditi Bharade | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +6 min
AdvertisementThe National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has flagged fresh concerns with Boeing's 737 planes, saying that at least 40 airlines outside the US may be operating aircraft with faulty components. The NTSB said that Boeing's 737 flight manual instructs pilots facing a jammed rudder to overpower the system by applying "maximum force." Their Max family has been plagued by safety concerns since the two crashes of its 737 Max jetliners in 2018 and 2019 that killed a total of 346 people. Some bombshell allegations were publicized in a sprawling 204-page report released on June 17 by the Senate subcommittee that investigated Boeing's safety and quality practices. AdvertisementMerle Meyers, a former Boeing quality manager, said that Boeing's manufacturing team regularly tried to retrieve bad parts from a "reclamation" area even after they were thrown out.

Adani group is one of the India's largest multinational company with a diversified business portfolio. Madhabi Puri Buch and Dhaval Buch both denied wrongdoing and said the report's claims were baseless. "The number of injured could be in the hundreds and the deaths could go up as well," Jajarkot district official Harish Chandra Sharma told Reuters by phone. Officials said 99 people were killed in Jajarkot and 38 in neighbouring Rukum West district, both in Karnali province. At least 85 people were injured in Rukum West and 55 in Jajarkot, an official in the prime minister's office said. Thousands of residents spent the entire night in cold, open grounds because they were too scared to go in into the cracked houses as aftershocks struck," Sharma said. Local TV channels showed rescuers digging through the rubble with their bare hands looking for survivors in the debris of collapsed houses.

In addition, moderate turbulence jumped from 70.0 to 96.1 hours, while light turbulence hit 546.8 hours, up from 466.5. "[This] doesn't necessarily mean planes are encountering turbulence, clear air turbulence, 55% more often because, of course, planes try and avoid it and they've been getting very good at avoiding it," he said. "Although the radar on the flight deck can't see … clear air turbulence, there's a related technology called LIDAR that stands for light detection and ranging," Williams said. "By using that different wavelength of light, we can see invisible clear air turbulence ahead," he said. "Unfortunately it's very expensive and also comes in a big heavy box, which you don't want really to go on a plane to add weight onto the aircraft," Williams said.

The broadcaster showed footage of jets from Taiwan's Eva Airways (2618.TW) and Thai Airways (THAI.BK) on the ground. Part of the wing of the Thai Airways plane looked to be broken, and what appeared to be fragments could be seen near the runway. Thai Airways said Japan's civil aviation authority was investigating the incident.

The Enduring Appeal of Magical Mystery Musicians
  + stars: | 2023-04-28 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Dear listeners,On Wednesday night, I witnessed something that I never expected to see: a live performance by the mysterious British vocalist and producer Jai Paul. Paul’s music — full of glitches, strangely compressed sounds and spliced-together samples — is unmistakably a product of the digital age, yet his artistic persona could not be further from the era of social-media oversharing and streaming-service savvy. He has given one known interview, in 2011. What is it that enthralls us about a musical enigma? The faster culture moves, the more we seem to revere these artists who have opted out of the musical rat race.
What it was like to pilot the supersonic Concorde jet

It’s said that during the aircraft’s 27 years of service, there were more qualified American astronauts than there were British Airways Concorde pilots. Concorde: When supersonic travel was a reality 02:32 - Source: CNNThe small pool of Concorde pilots also meant everyone knew everyone. It would take him back to the day he stood at Heathrow, watching the first commercial Concorde flight take off. Future of supersonic flightAlmost two decades since Concorde’s final flight, the allure of supersonic flight hasn’t waned, with companies such as Boom Supersonic plotting plans for Concorde’s successor.
Walsh added that while consumers are paying higher ticket prices, airlines are not necessarily making a profit. watch nowAirline ticket prices have spiked by 25% in the past year — the biggest annual jump since 1989. Russia-Ukraine warBut another factor could contribute to even higher ticket prices — Russia's announcement of a military mobilization, said Qatar Airways CEO Akbar Al Baker. Oil prices jumped by more than 2% after Putin's announcement, following concerns of an escalation of the war in Ukraine and squeezing oil and gas supplies. Hopes for affordable sustainable fuelAl Baker called for more investments in alternative fuel, and that Qatar Airlines is "ready to invest in sustainable aviation fuel" on the condition that it is "reasonably priced."
Suzanne Plunkett/CNN Restricted view: Concorde's windows were much smaller than those on a normal passenger airplane. Suzanne Plunkett/CNN Concorde cloakroom: Despite the space limitations, there was room for a closet to ensure Concorde's well-heeled passengers wouldn't crease their coats and garments. Suzanne Plunkett/CNN Work with perks: "The flight attendants loved being on it; the passengers loved being on it. Suzanne Plunkett/CNN Switches and dials: Meanwhile, in the cockpit, the pilots relied on simple analog dials and switches to control the super-fast jet. There are always rumors of new supersonic aircraft in the works, and I enjoy tracking the updates, but nothing seems concrete yet.

“During the Second World War, Vegemite captured the Australian market. Marmite was unobtainable and the Australian Army supplied Vegemite to its troops,” says the museum in a post highlighting defining symbols of Australia. “In the 1950s and 60s, despite acquisition by the American company Kraft, Vegemite became a distinctively ‘Australian’ food. 🥳No round-up of Aussie foods would be complete without this ubiquitous salty brown spread, which turns 100 on October 25.
