But the Covid-19 vaccines provided 54% protection against symptomatic infection last season, CDC data shows, despite new variants that cropped up. The updated Covid-19 vaccines are available now, but ideal timing for getting the shot may differ based on individual circumstances. Unlike the flu and Covid-19 vaccines, the RSV vaccine is one-time dose. The CDC says it’s also acceptable to get Covid-19, flu and RSV shots at one time, for those who are eligible. Covid-19, flu and RSV vaccines are widely available at pharmacies across the US.

Ron DeSantis’ administration is once again advising against the mRNA vaccines: this time in the most vulnerable residents. In updated guidance for health care providers released Thursday, the Florida Health Department and state Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo questioned the safety and effectiveness of the mRNA Covid vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna, including for older adults and people with underlying health problems. Dr. Paul Offit, a vaccine expert at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, said the Florida surgeon general's guidance is unnecessarily alarming people about the Covid vaccines. "The mRNA vaccines are remarkably safe," he added. The CDC currently recommends everyone ages 6 months and older get an updated Covid vaccine this fall from any of the three options.

CNN —Newly updated vaccines against Covid-19 will be in pharmacies soon, just as the US is experiencing a surge of infections. Experts say it depends on your health, whether you’ve recently had Covid-19, which vaccine you plan to get and when it’s convenient for you. For that reason, he’s going to hold off on getting the updated shot. Ranney noted that the updated mRNA shots from Pfizer and Moderna will probably be available first, with Novavax’s vaccine coming in a few weeks. “The reality is that we’ve had waves of Covid every summer for the last few years, and so I think we have to kind of do a reset or rethink about how we’re doing Covid vaccine delivery,” Hotez said.

CNN —The judge overseeing Donald Trump’s criminal trial related to hush money payments said he will not recuse himself from the case, rejecting the former president’s latest attempt to remove him ahead of his sentencing next month. Trump has repeatedly sought to remove Judge Juan Merchan from the proceedings, citing work the judge’s daughter has done for Democratic campaigns. In denying Trump’s motion, the judge wrote, “this court now reiterates for the third time, that which should already be clear – innuendo and mischaracterization do not a conflict create.”The judge said Trump has offered no new facts to warrant another review. “Counsel has merely repeated arguments that have already been denied by this and higher courts,” Merchan wrote in his decision. “President Trump will continue to fight this scam, and will always do all he can to save this great country from the dangerously liberal Harris-Biden mess.”This story has been updated with additional reaction.

The initial application from Lykos presented positive data from two late-stage clinical trials that used MDMA in combination with talk therapy to treat PTSD. The advisers said it was also difficult to parse how much the accompanying talk therapy — an area that the FDA does not regulate — contributed to outcomes. Advocates for the treatment, including some veterans groups, said they were “incredibly disappointed” by the FDA decision. Dozens of clinical trials involving psychedelics are in various stages, and additional scrutiny can help strengthen the findings and build confidence. Psychopharmacology did not allow the study authors to publish a correction with data that excluded findings from one study site, said Allison Feduccia, an author in all three retracted studies.

Vaccine experts select the Covid strain in the spring for a vaccination campaign in the fall. The campaign is tapping state political directors to lead outreach to Republicans in their regions, the source told NBC News. However, the source said the campaign is having a difficult time locking in support from certain state leadership teams to head GOP outreach. As part of Sunday’s announcement, the Harris campaign said it will unveil a digital campaign where Republican Harris supporters make “their case online to fellow Republicans.”During the 2020 election, the Biden-Harris campaign relied on independent, never-Trump groups to court GOP voters. That source believes former Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., will eventually endorse Vice President Kamala Harris, though she was not included in Sunday’s rollout of campaign endorsements. The source also said they suggested that the Harris campaign court the endorsement of former Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., who endorsed President Joe Biden in 2020.

Unfortunately, nobody from the emergency management team had told the accessible transportation provider that they were part of the plan. CNN —Covid-19 levels have been rising in the United States for weeks as new variants drive what’s become an annual summer surge. That’s enough time to offer protection during the winter respiratory virus season but probably after this summer’s wave has ebbed. On Thursday, the CDC recommended that everyone ages 6 months and older receive an updated Covid-19 vaccine for the 2024-25 season. Unlike flu and RSV, Covid-19 is constantly circulating; it doesn’t offer a reprieve. The changes are meant to “simplify RSV vaccine decision-making for clinicians and the public,” the agency said.

All Americans ages 6 months and older should receive one of the new Covid-19 vaccines when they become available this fall, scientific advisers to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Thursday. The recommendation comes as the nation faces a summer wave of Covid, with the number of infections rising in at least 39 states and territories. Most Americans have acquired layers of immunity against the coronavirus from repeat infections or vaccine doses, or both. The vaccines now offer an incremental boost, remaining effective for only a few months as immunity wanes and the virus continues to evolve. Still, across every age group, a vast majority of Americans who were hospitalized for Covid did not receive one of the shots offered last fall, according to data presented at a meeting of the C.D.C.’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices.

CNBC's Jim Cramer on Tuesday explained why he continues to be bullish about pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly . Continually confident about Eli Lilly because of the enormous success of its weight loss and diabetes drugs, he said the company's new Alzheimer's treatment has the potential to further boost business. On Monday, a panel of advisors to the Food and Drug Administration unanimously recommended Eli Lilly's Alzheimer's drug, currently known as donanemab. "I think this advisory committee decision on their Alzheimer's drug does precisely that." Eli Lilly did not immediately respond to request for comment.

Over the last three years, a new class of Alzheimer’s drug, the first to treat a root cause of the disease, has set off a roller coaster of hope and disappointment. Lecanemab (brand name Leqembi; pronounced le-KEM-bee) was given full approval by the Food and Drug Administration in July 2023 and is currently the only one of its class available to Alzheimer’s patients, outside clinical trials. The drug has been shown to slow the progression of the disease, but its benefits are fairly modest. With lecanemab having been approved for nearly a year — and with a similar drug, donanemab, being reviewed by an F.D.A. There are strict requirements for patients to be eligible for lecanemab; by one estimate, fewer than 20 percent met the qualifications for the medication.

FLiRT variants are offshoots of the JN.1 variant — all part of the broader Omicron family — that caused this winter’s wave. The mutations of the FLiRT variants make increased transmissibility — and a possible summer wave — a real threat. “We learned from the laboratories that FLiRT variants appeared, so far, to be as transmissible as the other Omicron subvariants, which means they’re really quite contagious. As of May 1, the requirement for all hospitals to report Covid-19 data to the federal government has expired. While the FLiRT variants pose some risk this summer, experts remain focused on what might happen in the fall.
