Professor Yoshua Bengio, at the One Young World Summit in Montreal, Canada, on Friday, Sept. 20, 2024Famed computer scientist Yoshua Bengio — an artificial intelligence pioneer — has warned of the nascent technology's potential negative effects on society and called for more research to mitigate its risks. Machines could soon have most of the cognitive abilities of humans, he said — artificial general intelligence (AGI) is a type of AI technology that aims to equal or better human intellect. Yoshua Bengio Head of the Montreal Institute for Learning AlgorithmsSuch outcomes are possible within decades, he said. There are arguments to suggest that the way AI machines are currently being trained "would lead to systems that turn against humans," Bengio said. Yoshua Bengio Head of the Montreal Institute for Learning AlgorithmsCompanies developing AI must also be liable for their actions, according to the computer scientist.

Business spending on generative AI surged 500% this year, from $2.3 billion in 2023 to $13.8 billion, according to data released by Menlo Ventures on Wednesday. The report also found that OpenAI ceded market share in enterprise AI, declining from 50% to 34%. Anthropic doubled its market share from 12% to 24%. Although OpenAI and Anthropic dominated companies' AI model use, he said, people are "juggling models" and that habit is "not a well-understood piece of data." Meta 's market share stayed at 16% and Cohere's share remained at 3%.

There could be a misalignment in how an employee thinks they're doing and how management thinks they're doing, most likely due to a lack of feedback. These things surface when it comes time for a promotion, but they're hard to fix when you're unaware it's a problem. Ask your manager what you need to work on to move on to the next level. Major tech companies have cracked down on fully remote work, including Amazon, Google, and Meta. Get into the office and soak up the knowledge within its walls, Google's former CEO says. Studies have also suggested that being fully remote decreases workers' productivity. Companies, including Amazon, JPMorgan, and Goldman Sachs, have ditched their remote work policies for full return-to-office mandates, with some even threatening to track performance or terminate those who don't comply. However, Google assured workers in October that it would not follow Amazon's expectations for staff to come into the office five days a week.

But the idea of electing the first female president didn't strongly motivate people to turn out. They don't expect that America will have to wait much longer for a female president. "I voted for Vice President Harris, but there was so much pause in that decision — I debated it for weeks," she says. The Japanese government has unlocked billions of dollars in subsidies for its domestic chip sector. One likely beneficiary of the funding announced Monday will be Japan-based Rapidus, a state-backed chip venture at the heart of the country's chip revitalization efforts. In the 1980s, Japan was the world's dominant chip player and occupied more than half of the global semiconductor market. Through its chip subsidies, which have mostly been geared toward increasing manufacturing capacity, the country should be able to expand into other aspects of the supply and enhance its position, Yang added.

Many historians of women’s equality movements through the decades say that the gains won by women often didn’t benefit all women; rather, they helped privileged women secure more opportunities in society. The fight for legal equality allowed women with the necessary means to pay for college and find jobs with good salaries, for instance. In last week’s election, some women said they specifically appreciated Mr. Trump’s support for their role as mothers. Some believe Mr. Trump will support their position that parents, not the government should decide whether children are vaccinated. And they said they saw the rising cost of groceries as an affront to women trying to feed their families, and something they think Mr. Trump can stem.

Generative AI wasn't part of the lexicon for most of us during President-elect Donald Trump 's first four years in the White House. At a high level, generative AI is a cutting-edge form of technology that will shape the next decade and beyond. While the AI field has been around for decades, generative AI applications can create new content, including computer code, human-like text and images, in response to user prompts. Those that lead in generative AI will very likely shape the world as we know it. With 5G, Trump didn't just hope the U.S. could just fun faster than everyone else.

The ICBM launched Thursday flew higher and for a longer duration than any other weapon North Korea has tested. As the transporter-erector launchers get bigger, their mobility decreases," Lee Sangmin, an expert at South Korea's Korea Institute for Defense Analyses. Lee Illwoo, an expert with the Korea Defense Network in South Korea, said North Korea may have developed a larger missile to carry bigger and more destructive warheads or multi-warheads. If that's the case, Lee said North Korea could have used liquid fuels as they generate higher thrust than solid fuels. watch nowLee said North Korea may have placed a dummy, empty warhead on the Hwasong-19 to make it fly higher.

There are questions on whether North Korea has acquired the technology to shield warheads from the high-temperature, high-stress environment of atmospheric reentry. Many foreign analysts say North Korea also must have improved altitude control and guidance systems for missiles. They say North Korea needs an ability to place multiple warheads on a single missile to defeat its rivals’ missile defenses. All of North Korea’s known ICBM tests, including Thursday’s, have been performed on steep angles to avoid neighboring countries. North Korea’s reported troop dispatch highlights the expanding military cooperation between North Korea and Russia.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton sued an El Paso doctor on Tuesday, accusing him of providing transition-related medical care to nearly two dozen minors in violation of state law. Texas enacted a law, Senate Bill 14, last year banning gender-affirming care for anyone under 18. Laws restricting access to transition-related care for minors exist in 26 states, according to the Movement Advancement Project, an LGBTQ think tank. The Texas lawsuits come just ahead of the presidential election, where transition-related care has become somewhat of a flashpoint.
