The modern 40 means having toddlers running around, buying your first home, and, at last, catching up on retirement savings. "By the time you're 40, 45, you can't sing, and you can't play guitar; maybe it's time to give up on your aspirations of being a rock star." At work, you realize you're protected from age discrimination, which you feel like you're still much too young for. When we're young, we're happy — and then that declines, bottoming out in middle age, about 40 to 50. The question isn't just whether my 40 will look like my parents' 40 — it's also whether it will look like the 40 of everyone from my high school.

Facebook wants to win back Gen Z users by transforming itself into more of a tool for young people to navigate adulthood better. The social media platform announced a redesign last week that caters to what execs believe younger people want to see more of. But Meta, the parent company of Facebook, noticed that young adults active on the platform tend to use its community-centric features like Facebook Marketplace and groups. “One is just: What do young people want — particularly young adults, Gen Z, ages 18 through 29 — from a social app these days? “Nearly all Facebook users are telling us they’re there to keep up with friends and family.

Editor’s note: If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health, help is available. But what I really admire is her commitment to keeping her mental health in the limelight right alongside her gymnastics accomplishments. I learned to prioritize the trifecta of mental health: eating, sleeping, breathing. It also normalizes prioritizing our mental health, reducing the stigma, shame and isolation that surround mental illness. Your mental health is where health begins, and you deserve to take care of your mental health as much as Biles or any other Olympic athlete.

Millennials are losing their cool

Millennials may not be there yet on pants, or at least that's what I, as a millennial, tell myself. The internet is fueling the millennials vs. Gen Z discourse, but underlying it is something deeper: millennials raging against the dying of the light. "It's really beneficial for brands that at least the online discourse has millennials looking to Gen Z for trends. The nature of internet culture, much of which was created by millennials, puts a unique bent on the discourse and how creators and influencers address millennials. Gen Z, be nice to your friendly millennial next door, and vice versa.

Looking back over a longer period, the report said as many as 43% of adults purchased a toy for themselves in the past year, with the top reasons being for personal fun, socialization and for collecting. Trading cards, Squishmallows (which are a rage across age groups), Lego sets and sports toys were among the most sought-after toy products in the period, the report said. As adults play with toys more and more, the trend bodes well to counter the decline in overall toy sales. Circana said toy industry dollar sales declined by 1% through April, versus the same period a year ago but are still up 38% compared to 2019. “Tailwinds, like the growing adult toy market and spending power of higher income households and grandparents, drive positive trends,” Juli Lennett, vice president and toy industry advisor at Circana, said in the report.

‘Babes’ Review: Adulting, With Babies

Alas: That’s what happened with “Babes.” The elements that promised joy were all there, starting with two very funny comic talents in Ilana Glazer and Michelle Buteau. There’s a screenplay by Glazer and Josh Rabinowitz, who was a producer on “Broad City,” the kooky, beloved show in which Glazer co-starred. But sometimes a pile of good ingredients doesn’t make something delicious, and I guess that’s what happened here. The marketing for “Babes” suggests something akin to “Bridesmaids,” the runaway 2011 hit that reminded Hollywood that raunchy comedies starring women can be hilarious and profitable. Dawn and Marty’s second baby is born on Thanksgiving Day, and on the way home from the hospital Eden meets Claude (Stephan James) on the subway.

Compared with Millennials, especially, who entered the workforce in the Dark Ages known as the Great Recession, the Gen Z experience is a dream. But Gen Z isn’t having an easy go of it either. Gen Z hasn’t had a chance to get a foot in the door. “Many Gen Zers also indicated their first step in managing behavioral-health challenges was going to TikTok or Reddit for advice,” the report said. It’s hard to blame them: Many in Gen Z had their formative school years blown up by a global pandemic.

Younger adults are less worried about financial fraud than are older generations, a recent study found. Only 15% of Gen Z and 20% of millennials are concerned about falling victim to stolen money or assets through deceptive tactics, according to a Bank of America Better Money Habits survey of 1,000 respondents. By comparison, about 27% of Gen X and 27% of baby boomers feel at risk of fraud. But that doesn't mean younger generations can't experience severe consequences, said Matt Schulz, chief credit analyst at LendingTree. Financial fraud is a really big deal and can be really impactful," Schulz said.

Most of my college friends are scattered across the country, so I largely have long-distance pals. I felt anticipatory loneliness when some college friends came to town for a weekend — all of them long-distance friends, as many of mine are. Whenever I meet someone my age in person, they're quick to tell me that they're lonely as well. It has lessened with joining volunteer cohorts, going to yoga classes, and scheduling regular phone calls with those close long-distance friends. I've started to appreciate them that much more when I get to see them — virtually or in person.

Can I afford more than the mortgage payment? When buying a home, there is always a focus on the down payment, mortgage interest rate, and monthly mortgage payments. But there is more to owning a home than simply the mortgage payment. That was several thousand dollars — more than my mortgage payment at the time. Issues of all kinds arise when owning a home, so you have to really be able to afford more than just the mortgage payment.

Hannah Hood got passed up for a promotion she wanted while working from home — twice. While her career took a hit, she loved the flexibility in her personal life and even got her MBA virtually. The first promotion that I got passed up for took place when we were 100% remote, in the thick of COVID. Now I'm about three months into a 100% remote job as a corporate marketing manager at ServicePower, where most of my coworkers are over 500 miles away. I'm not worried about getting passed up for opportunities because we're all in this remote environment together.
