Israel was “closer to a ceasefire deal than we have ever been,” Defense Minister Israel Katz said during a closed-door parliamentary committee hearing Monday. Hamas would also see a large number of Palestinian prisoners released by Israel as part of the deal, the sources said. Hamas has not confirmed to NBC News or others’ reporting that it has agreed to Israeli troops in Gaza. "After the military and governmental power of Hamas in Gaza is defeated, Israel will securely control Gaza with full freedom of action" he posted on X, likening this outcome to Israel’s current control over the occupied West Bank. Katz did not immediately respond to NBC News’ request for details on what “full freedom of action” would mean.

“We will build American, buy American and hire American,” he said during a rally in August. Forbes first reported on Friday Trump’s businesses hired more foreign workers than ever in 2024. While thousands of US businesses use guest workers, the process of hiring them can be cumbersome. Dattolo said dozens of country clubs and businesses in the county use guest workers, though she said before hiring foreigners, companies must advertise the jobs to American workers. In that time, Trump businesses requested and received government approval to hire foreign laborers for more than 2,100 positions.

CNN —China has tripled the amount of time visitors can spend in the country without a visa in yet another move to entice more foreign tourists. Passport holders from 38 countries can enter China visa-free for up to 30 days, including France, Malaysia, New Zealand, Japan and Switzerland. Until 2023, US citizens seeking a China travel visa had to confirm a hotel booking, tour itinerary and flight reservation before applying for a visa, but those requirements have since been dropped. Foreigners eligible to visit under the new 240-hour transit policy do not have the freedom to travel throughout China. Meanwhile, Hong Kong and Macao both count as third destinations for those entering under the 240-hour visa-free transit program.

The same number of economists expect the Japanese central bank to raise rates in January. The BOJ, which last raised rates in July, has signaled its readiness to tighten further if wage growth and prices align with its projections. Japanese interest rates are the lowest among developed countries due to the BOJ's longstanding policy of supporting the country's moribund economy. These trends could reverse as Japanese interest rates rise while central banks elsewhere begin to lower rates. The BOJ has yet to gain confidence in its outlook, according to Akira Otani of Goldman Sachs Japan.

It is also not clear if Trump's team has communicated with Putin’s government about Ukraine, and if so, what has been conveyed by either side. The transition team declined to comment on whether a Putin ally, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, carried any message from Russia to Trump in his recent visit to Mar-a-Lago. Asked if Walz and others on Trump's transition team are working with the Biden administration on a ceasefire plan, transition spokesperson Brian Hughes said: “Congressman Waltz and National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan are in contact on many issues. “The atmosphere thus far in terms of the engagement between the Ukrainians and the incoming Trump team, including Zelenskyy and Trump himself, has been positive,” one of the sources said. The Trump transition team declined to comment on how Trump views the idea of barring Ukraine from joining NATO indefinitely or for some designated period of time.

Pressure from President-elect Donald Trump was a major factor in Hamas relenting on two key issues during cease-fire and hostage-release talks with Israel, a senior administration official told NBC News on Friday. The Wall Street Journal was the first to report on the concessions Hamas was prepared to make. Basem Naim, a member of Hamas' political wing, told NBC News that he was not aware that the group had recently made concessions during negotiations. National security adviser Jake Sullivan said Thursday that the Biden administration has had “very good consultation and coordination,” with the incoming Trump team. “And we’re going to keep working until we get it done.”The latest cease-fire proposal stems from U.S. proposals earlier this year, an Israeli official told NBC News.

Kyiv, Ukraine CNN —Russia launched a new widespread attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure overnight, forcing the country to implement emergency power outages, Ukrainian authorities said on Friday. Once again, the energy sector across Ukraine is under massive attack,” Ukrainian energy minister German Halushchenko said on his official Facebook page. Ukrenergo, Ukraine’s energy grid operator, said it was introducing emergency power outages across the country. Russia’s latest assault comes after Moscow vowed on Thursday to respond to a Ukrainian attack on a city in southwest Russia, which Russia claimed involved six US-made ATACMS ballistic missiles. WASHINGTON — The House of Representatives on Thursday passed a bipartisan bill backed by the federal judiciary that would create dozens of new judgeships despite President Joe Biden's pledge to veto it. House Democratic Whip Katherine Clark, of Massachusetts, sent a note before the vote Thursday urging colleagues to vote against the bill. The bill passed the House on a 236-173 vote Thursday, with 29 Democrats voting in favor and two Republicans voting against. “At that time, Democrats supported the bill — they thought Kamala Harris would win the presidency,” House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., said in a statement. Biden threatened to veto the legislation on Tuesday, with the White House saying it was "unnecessary to the efficient and effective administration of justice."

The U.S. government condemned the Taliban on Wednesday for reportedly ordering the suspension of medical education for women and girls in Afghanistan. In August, the Taliban published vice laws that ban women’s voices and bare faces in public in an effort to completely erase Afghan women and girls from public life. Medical education, including nursing and midwifery, was one of the only forms of education still available to women in the country. “These directives, now coupled with excluding women from obtaining a medical education, further jeopardize the health, well-being, safety and lives of not just Afghan women and girls, but all Afghans,” Blinken said. The group said the availability of health care was already affected by an insufficient number of female health care workers in the country, where hospital wards are segregated by gender.

CNN —FBI Director Christopher Wray’s resignation announcement was the latest, and inevitable, step in the accumulation of massive and unusual power around President-elect Donald Trump. For Trump’s supporters, Wray’s exit will represent another moment of triumph following the president-elect’s political comeback amid criminal cases that once threatened not just his political career but his liberty. They insist that Kash Patel, Trump’s pick to replace Wray, will purge what they see as the politicization of the FBI. An internal Justice Department report found that there were serious errors made in Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court applications on Carter Page, a former Trump 2016 campaign adviser. In many presidencies, tensions erupt between the bureau and Justice Department and the White House, since the agencies are regarded as quasi-independent.

This is what 4 of Trump’s cabinet picks think of the agencies they would lead. If confirmed, Ms. Gabbard would oversee more than a dozen spy agencies and have access to highly sensitive intelligence. by firing its top officials, closing its headquarters in Washington and going after Mr. Trump’s rivals. Oil prices were little changed in early Asian trade on Thursday as forecasts of weak demand and a higher-than-expected rise in U.S. gasoline and distillate inventories stemmed gains from an additional round of European Union sanctions that threatened Russian oil flows. OPEC cut its demand growth forecasts for 2025 for the fifth straight month on Wednesday and by the largest amount yet. Weak demand, particularly in top importer China, and non-OPEC+ supply growth were two factors behind the move. However, investors anticipate a rise in Chinese demand, after Beijing unveiled plans this week to adopt an "appropriately loose" monetary policy in 2025, which could spur oil demand. The Kremlin said that reports of a possible tightening of U.S. sanctions on Russian oil suggested the administration of President Joe Biden wants to leave a difficult legacy for U.S.-Russia relations.

In the latest show of support for Ukraine, the Biden administration plans to announce an expected $500 million aid package in coming days that will pull equipment out of the US military’s stocks. And the senior administration official told CNN that the administration is pouring resources into getting previously announced weapons for Ukraine into Kyiv’s hands before Biden leaves office. “DoD is undertaking a historic effort to move massive quantities of weapons into Ukraine in the next five weeks,” the senior administration official said. He said in the interview that he “vehemently” disagreed with the decision by the Biden administration to allow Ukraine to strike inside Russia with US-provided weapons. But still, the biggest challenge facing Ukraine is not its weapons stocks, the senior administration official said — it’s manpower.

Biden administration officials said Wednesday they have no current plans to authorize a stockpiled bird flu vaccine, despite an escalating outbreak among livestock in the U.S. and at least 58 human infections across seven states. Almost all bird flu cases in the U.S. have been in farmworkers who have had contact with infected animals — either dairy cows or poultry — aside from a patient in Missouri and a child in California. The federal government has two bird flu vaccine candidates available in limited quantities in the nation’s Strategic National Stockpile, though they need to be authorized by the Food and Drug Administration before they can be used. Still, some public health experts believe the time for vaccination is now, particularly for farmworkers. In 1976, at the first signs of an H1N1 swine flu outbreak in the U.S., public health officials quickly initiated a nationwide vaccine campaign.

When Syria’s new interim prime minister, Mohammad al-Bashir, chaired a Cabinet meeting in Damascus on Tuesday, hanging behind him was the flag of the country’s suddenly victorious opposition. That path will largely depend on Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, the rebel organization that led the charge into Damascus and is now stewarding Syria’s political overhaul. Washington CNN —President Joe Biden is facing mounting pressure from Democratic lawmakers and allies to extend protections to immigrants in the United States amid party fears over President-elect Donald Trump’s promise of mass deportations. Some administration officials are skeptical that expanding or redesignating TPS would pass muster under an incoming administration beyond those that will already be up for renewal. Temporary protections for El Salvadorans in the United States, for example, are set to expire in early March. Just before leaving office in 2021, Trump provided Venezuelans already in the United States temporary protection from deportation. “People are on the edge of their seat,” one immigrant advocate told CNN, referring to immigrants in the United States.
