Nicholas Sparks’s sprawling home in New Bern, N.C., didn’t always look like a museum. For close to 10 years, the three-story, riverfront house was overrun with the author’s five children, who threw footballs in the living room and completed their homework at the now fully dressed dining room table custom-built for 10. “It was an active, busy household for a long time,” Mr. Sparks said. “At one point, there were four dogs and about 13 people living here — myself, my now ex-wife, our five children, an exchange student, and friends.”

Thorn estimated that about 75 percent of all Negro Leagues box scores have been documented, and that MLB would update the records as more are uncovered. To some extent, Negro League numbers will always be a work in progress. Barnstorming games, essential as a financial lifeline to Negro League teams, are not included in the statistics. Kristi Noem paid an odd compliment to former President Donald Trump in her much-talked-about memoir. "He really doesn't think he's better than anyone else," Noem wrote on Trump, a claim that even the former president might protest. "I love to watch her figure things out, in ways that grown-ups like me, would never consider, because that's just how we've always done things, Noem wrote.

I worked at Foursquare and Google, and in 2014, I started my business, Tech Ladies. I was proud of the mission, but I never exercised or took a vacation, and I rarely saw friends. From retired to unretiredWhen I retired, we moved from New York City to New Jersey for my husband's job. I started weightlifting and took long walks with new friends. The truth is, I never had balance in my worklife before, but I owed it to myself now to try.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Alabama on Friday will mark the 60th anniversary of one of the most heinous attacks during the Civil Rights Movement, the 1963 bombing of a church that killed four Black girls in 1963. On the morning of Sept. 15, 1963, dynamite planted by Ku Klux Klan members exploded at the church, killing the girls and shocking the nation. The girls were gathered in a downstairs washroom to freshen up before Sunday services when the blast rocked the church. The explosion killed 11-year-old Denise McNair, and Cynthia Wesley, Carole Robertson, and Addie Mae Collins, all 14. McNair has asked city churches to join in tolling their bells Friday morning to mark the moment when the bomb went off.

[1/2] U.S. Supreme Associate Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson waves during a photo opportunity outside the U.S. Supreme Court following an investiture ceremony for Justice Jackson at the court in Washington, U.S., September 30, 2022. Jackson used part of her speech as a warning against "complacency and ignorance." "Learning about our country's history can be painful, but history is also our best teacher," she said. Jackson's speech comes at a time of conflict in several states over the teaching of history in schools, especially in Florida, which has restricted some educational efforts regarding racism, slavery and LGBTQ rights. In July, the state sparked controversy by approving new guidelines on teaching Black history, including how enslaved people acquired skills for "personal benefit."

There is little to be gained from getting overly attached to source material. When a story told first in one form is adapted into another, it becomes a different creature — in the details and sometimes the broad outlines, too. The book is a quiet, gentle thing, and it takes its time, layering in the details of Addie and Louis’s pasts and presents. Each has been lonely since long before their spouses died: his marriage marred by a scandalous affair, hers numbed by the death of a child. When Addie’s young grandson, Jamie, comes to stay with her, he’s lonely at first, too, and scared of the dark.
