On Monday, AWS's CEO, Matt Garman, told employees that the company had hired Julia White, a former SAP and Microsoft executive, as its new chief marketing officer. Before that, she spent almost 20 years at Microsoft in various roles, including corporate vice president for the Azure cloud computing unit. The company recently added Colleen Aubrey, a former Amazon advertising executive, as a senior vice president of AWS Solutions, and Baskar Sridharan, an ex-Google Cloud vice president, as a vice president of AI/ML services.

Amazon 's cloud boss on Thursday gave employees a frank message about the company's recently announced five-day in-office mandate. Staffers who don't agree with Amazon's new policy can leave, Amazon Web Services CEO Matt Garman said during an all-hands meeting at the company's second headquarters in Arlington, Virginia. "If there are people who just don't work well in that environment and don't want to, that's OK, there are other companies around," Garman said, according to a transcript viewed by CNBC. The company's previous return-to-work stance required corporate workers to be in office at least three days a week. The move has spurred backlash from some Amazon employees who say they're just as productive working from home or in a hybrid work environment as they are in an office.

That continues a trend from 2023, when generative AI companies raised $25.9 billion for the full year, up more than 200% from 2022. The average round for AI companies is 140% bigger this year compared with last, the data shows, while for non-AI companies the increase is only 10%. Most venture investors are bullish on the potential for generative AI to eventually create big returns at the application layer. John-David Lovelock, an analyst at Gartner and a 35-year veteran of the IT industry, sees a big opportunity for generative AI in the enterprise. Yet, in 2024, only 1% of the trillion dollars spent on software will be from businesses spending on generative AI products, he said.

Amazon said Thursday that revenue in its cloud division increased 19% in the second quarter, beating analysts' estimates. The company reported revenue for Amazon Web Services of $26.28 billion. While AWS continues to lead the cloud infrastructure market, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud have been gaining momentum, due in part to early deployments of AI models. On Tuesday, Microsoft said revenue from Azure and other cloud services jumped 29% in the quarter, and last week Google said its cloud revenue, including cloud infrastructure and Workspace productivity subscriptions, also rose 29%. Companies have started consuming cloud services to deploy generative AI models that power technologies such as OpenAI's ChatGPT chatbot.

Amazon will double the value of credits it offers some startups to use its cloud infrastructure, CNBC has learned, as the company faces heightened competition from Microsoft in artificial intelligence services. Seed-stage startups will still be eligible for $100,000 in credits, AWS said. But Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud are growing more quickly, and are benefiting from rapidly advancing AI models. During Selipsky's time at the helm, Microsoft and Google increased their share of the cloud infrastructure market. Participants will be able to access up to $1 million in cloud credits, according to the website.

"I'm not aware of anyone using AWS chips in any sort of large volumes," Rasgon told Business Insider, referring to Amazon's AI chips. This time, the idea is to avoid paying for expensive Nvidia GPUs, while still providing cloud customers with powerful AI services. An obvious response to this would be to have cloud customers use Amazon's AI chips instead. However, some of the largest AWS customers have not been willing to use these homegrown alternatives, the documents said. For example, AWS's AI chips still have "compatibility gaps" in certain open-source frameworks, making Nvidia GPUs a more popular option.

"It's very early days in generative AI," said Jassy, who succeeded Jeff Bezos as CEO in 2021. Davidson, told CNBC that Amazon was "caught flat-footed" by the generative AI boom. During a Q&A session on Wednesday, Jassy was asked twice about the status of Amazon's generative AI efforts. He said the company is "seeing a lot of momentum" in generative AI within AWS to where it's now a multibillion-dollar business based on annualized revenue. Amazon has previously said it intends to use generative AI to make Alexa more conversational.

Adam Selipsky, the chief executive of the cloud computing unit, will step down from his role next month, the company announced Tuesday. Selipsky, who first joined AWS in 2005 — before its services were even publicly available — has led the business since 2021, when previous AWS CEO Andy Jassy was promoted to lead all of Amazon. Matt Garman, currently vice president of sales, marketing and global services, will take over as AWS CEO starting June 3. Amazon Web Services’ sales have grown more than 85% since Selipsky’s takeover.

While Microsoft Azure's reported 30% year-over-year revenue growth and Alphabet's Google Cloud posted 26% annual revenue growth during the same period, Amazon's results nevertheless indicated the softness in cloud spending is rolling over. Amazon said it expects accelerating AWS revenue trends to continue in 2024, which is good news for the stock. In a poll of more than 1,000 U.S. consumers about their expected spending, Amazon remains the preferred e-commerce destination "by a wide margin." Another encouraging finding in the Wedbush survey: Amazon Prime members said they are seeing "modest improvements" in their experiences, with 39% saying they received an order on the same or next day.
