On the day after the election, Nov. 6, X experienced its largest user exodus since Elon Musk bought the platform in 2022. NBC News spoke to six people who have joined or committed to using Threads and Bluesky in place of X after the election because of Musk. In the past five days, Wurtz said people she used to follow on X have started to trickle over to Threads. “I have a private personal account for friends and family and a public account for Taylor Swift, so nobody drowns in my Taylor Swift content,” Polo said. Currently, X users can go to the site’s settings and opt out.

The messaging app is fueling Meta's non-advertising revenue growth. That was mostly driven by WhatsApp's business messaging product, which lets companies pay to chat with current or prospective customers. Since the third quarter of 2022, Meta has repeatedly cited WhatsApp business messaging as a key source of revenue growth. AdvertisementGenerative AI could boost the efficiency of Meta's messaging business going forward, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg told investors in April. Still, each of Meta's messaging products is distinctly different in who it connects, where people are using it, and how Meta can monetize it.

Beata Zawrzel | Nurphoto | Getty ImagesWith Americans heading to the polls on Election Day, social media companies like Meta , TikTok, X and YouTube are under intense pressure to handle what's expected to be a flood of disinformation, heightened by the rise of artificial intelligence. The video amassed hundreds of thousands of views within hours after it was posted on Elon Musk's social media platform X. And TikTok failed to catch ads containing false election information despite its ban on political advertising, according to an October report from Global Witness. On Facebook and Instagram, Meta said it's adding fact-check labels to election content that's been debunked. In sharing dozens of posts a day on X, Musk regularly amplifies false election information to his more than 200 million followers.

Snapchat says it averages 850 million monthly users. Meanwhile, Twitter's current owner, Elon Musk, says his service has 600 million monthly users. Back in April, Meta said Threads had 150 million monthly users. Some of them click on Threads posts they see there, and become Threads users that way. Threads doesn't seem like it's ever going to be that, and Meta doesn't seem very interested in trying to make that.

Threads has added a green dot that shows when you're online. Instead, it's a green dot that signals when you're online. The green dot is turned on by default, but you can turn it off completely, or enable it to be seen only by mutual followers. But do you need a green dot to indicate you're talking about the Mets game or whatever is on Bravo at that moment? I don't imagine the green dot will change the way I engage with people, but I like to lean into the creepiness.

Meta is sharing new advice for creators on Threads about engaging content and how often to post. We spoke with Meta's head of Threads about what the platform is advising creators to do on the app. If there's one takeaway that Dalton Smith has for creators using Threads, it's that they should remember it's "a real-time conversation app." Advertisement"Most of the content will be distributed in just a few hours over the course of the day," Dalton Smith told BI. As news of the Olivia Nuzzi-RFK Jr. scandal tore through media and government circles over the past week, with increasingly titillating details emerging, those inside the New York magazine fold began to wonder about their own fallout. Read previewTeenagers across the world will experience something slightly different when they open Instagram over the next few weeks: Meta will now designate users under 18 as "Teen Accounts" — by default. The teen settings will automatically apply to newly made accounts and existing ones. Teen Accounts will have "Sleep Mode" enabled by default. For younger teens, parents can see who their children direct message with — but won't be able to read their DMs. Accounts of 16- and 17-year-olds will automatically default to Teen Accounts, but they'll be able to change the settings on their own (unless a parent has already signed onto parental controls).

Read previewA new feature for Instagram's Stories encourages community — the company just doesn't want this activity happening in closed groups away from advertisers. The social-media behemoth is launching a new tool that lets users leave comments under their followers' Stories. Only followers can see these comments, and only the people a user follows back can leave a comment. AdvertisementOne consequence of users spending more time in Instagram DMs is that there are fewer eyeballs for advertisers to target through Meta's powerful marketing platform. If this feature can successfully encourage users to start conversations within a Story instead of in DMs, they'll be more likely to keep swiping through Stories that show ads (a win for Instagram).

Read previewAfter finally ditching his daily navy tees to show off more of his personal style, Mark Zuckerberg is taking his fashion journey a step further. Since then, Mark has made his own gold chain meme (using Meta AI, of course.) In April Zuckerberg said he was working with a jewelry designer to create the perfect gold necklace dedicated to his daughters. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg predicted that smart glasses, enabled with AI technology, will become commonplace. The platform became the world's fastest-growing app when it launched after hitting 100 million users in just five days. Zuck said last week the X rival now has more than 175 million monthly active users. In a recent interview with Platformer, Threads and Instagram boss Adam Mosseri said the aim was still overtaking X. In April, Sensor Tower estimated Threads had averaged 28 million daily active users in the US, while X averaged 22 million. An Instagram add-onWhile Meta still backs Threads to overtake X, the platform still very much exists alongside Instagram.

Read previewIf you opened Instagram last July 5, the buzz about Threads was hard to miss. Threads plans to become more independent, but Instagram still drives a lot of the trafficRecent data from Emarketer found that Instagram has been a big driver of users to Threads — out of Threads' 29 million US users in 2023, 21% were Instagram users, while in 2024, that share rose to 29% out of 41.7 million users. Head of Instagram Adam Mosseri confirmed in a recent interview with Platformer that a lot of the platform's users were "coming over from Instagram." However, Instagram still reminds Threads users who dropped off to keep using the platform, like Kristin Bousquet, a creator who has 5,412 followers on Threads. "Just having the ability to go to someone's Instagram account from Threads, and vice versa, keeps it top of mind," he said.

In April 2019, David Ginsberg, a Meta executive, emailed his boss, Mark Zuckerberg, with a proposal to research and reduce loneliness and compulsive use on Instagram and Facebook. In the email, Mr. Ginsberg noted that the company faced scrutiny for its products’ impacts “especially around areas of problematic use/addiction and teens.” He asked Mr. Zuckerberg for 24 engineers, researchers and other staff, saying Instagram had a “deficit” on such issues. A week later, Susan Li, now the company’s chief financial officer, informed Mr. Ginsberg that the project was “not funded” because of staffing constraints. Adam Mosseri, Instagram’s head, ultimately declined to finance the project, too.

The app, dubbed Whee, pitches itself as a platform to "keep you connected with your close friends through life's spontaneous moments." Whee's arrival on the charts — it's 27th among social-networking apps in Apple's App Store, outranking Skype and Signal — comes as Instagram is also leaning into features for close friends. After spending years leaning into influencer content, to the chagrin of some users, the big social platforms are betting big on close friends. But as the platforms prioritized creator-made content, like on Instagram reels, everyday users' content seemed to take a back seat.

This disastrous mindset has hollowed out Silicon Valley's ability to innovate and caused regular people to grow increasingly frustrated with everyday tech. The large platforms have generally ignored this feedback for one big reason: The tech industry has been taken over by career managers. Now Google Search is more profitable and worse, elevating spammy content and outright scams, a problem exacerbated by artificial intelligence. AdvertisementBut today's tech products feel built to sell a dream of the future rather than solve a customer's existing pains. As long as the tech industry is controlled by people who don't build things, it will continue to build products that help raise growth metrics rather than help consumers with tangible problems.

How Mark Zuckerberg turned against the news

Mark Zuckerberg held regular discussions in 2017 and early 2018 about how to make news on Facebook more trustworthy and reliable. "Giving people a voice is not enough without having people dedicated to uncovering new information and analyzing it," Zuckerberg wrote. Zuckerberg also considered a permanent subsidy through his philanthropy the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative. Murdoch and Zuckerberg's yearslong relationship, while never outright friendly, turned "tense, very tense," when Australia passed the NMBC, a person who worked with Zuckerberg said. When Canada passed a law similar to Australia's last year, Meta simply and decisively turned off news content on Facebook and Instagram.

Last month, the company rolled out a new temporary "Spring Bonus," which he said was called Spring Bonus and not the "permanent bonus program" because he wanted to set expectations. For Instagram's bonus program to be successful, it would need to meet three criteria, according to Mosseri:It's a sustainable model, and Meta is not "burning cash." 'The thing I'm most excited about is subscriptions'The bonus program wasn't the only feature top of mind for Mosseri. Advertisement"The thing I'm most excited about is subscriptions," Mosseri said.
