CNN —Plenty of young golfers have sent crowds into a frenzy at Augusta National across the 88 years of The Masters, but perhaps none quite as young as Dakota Watson. Bubba Watson’s nine-year-old daughter delivered a putting masterclass during the par three contest on the eve of the major on Wednesday, showcasing the sort of golden touch around the greens that helped her father clinch two green jackets. You’ve never seen Dakota until today,” broadcaster Sean McDonough asked co-commentator Curtis Strange on ESPN’s live coverage of the contest. Now that they’re getting older, they can hit shots, we can have fun with it,” 45-year-old Watson, making his 16th Masters start, told reporters. That’s what this is all about.”After a two-and-a-half hour delay due to bad weather, the first round of The Masters got underway on Thursday.

The total solar eclipse plunged Augusta National Golf Club into darkness shortly after 3 p.m. local time in Georgia, bringing the major’s first practice round to a standstill as players, caddies and patrons turned their gazes skyward. 1 Scottie Scheffler – though only after being provided with a pair of viewing glasses by one helpful young fan. Caddies also donned solar glasses. “This is timed up pretty good; get to watch the end of the world at Augusta National,” the American said, laughing. An eclipse hasn't coincided with Masters week since 1940.

Sep 27, 2023; Rome, ITA; Team Europe golfer Matt Fitzpatrick addresses the media in a press conference during a practice day for the Ryder Cup golf competition at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club. The Englishman lost all five matches he contested across his Ryder Cup debut at age 22 in 2016, when the United States won 17-11, and in Europe's 19-9 defeat at Whistling Straits two years ago. Fitzpatrick, 29, said he is a better player after those experiences and knows how to prepare for tournaments such as the Ryder Cup after winning a major championship last year. Fitzpatrick said he was disappointed by his previous two appearances in the event but added that, in hindsight, he felt 2016 was too early for his Ryder Cup debut. The 44th Ryder Cup begins at the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Rome on Friday.

CNN —It’s been a Block party all week at the PGA Championship, and the man at the heart of festivities is not done partying just yet. Michael Block, the 46-year-old club pro who teaches golf lessons at a public course in California, is schooling many of the game’s biggest stars on New York’s notoriously challenging Oak Hill East Course. In the 105 years of the PGA Championship, no PGA Professional has ever finished inside the top 10. Not since Steve Schneiter in 2005 has a PGA pro finished inside the top-40. Should he remain eighth at the end of play, Block will earn $545,000, according to CBS Golf – even 30th place would see him take home $110,000.
[1/3] May 19, 2023; Rochester, New York, USA; Michael Block hits a tee shot on the 18th hole during the second round of the PGA Championship golf tournament. After making his first major cut, the head professional at Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club in Mission Viejo, California was asked what golf fans, most of whom had never heard of him before this week, should know about him. "I knew if I looked at that, I might get ahead of myself, and I didn't want to do that," said Block. I've made the cut, which is obviously, like I told you, a huge goal," said Block. With plenty of confidence going into the weekend, Block was not shy when asked what the ultimate "why not?"

Conners had started the day level with Scheffler one back of pacesetting Bryson DeChambeau and finished it in the same position also signing for a 68. World number 11 Hovland began his round with back-to-back birdies and then drained a five-foot birdie putt at the 18th to join Conners and Scheffler on five-under 135. "The tournament is halfway done," said Scheffler, who can reclaim the number ranking with a win on Sunday.
Keegan Bradley, who won the 2011 PGA Championship, was two shots off the pace with Norway's Viktor Hovland and New Zealand's Ryan Fox. DeChambeau, who missed last year's PGA Championship as he was recovering from surgery on his left hand, started on the back nine and reached the turn at one under. "It was a grind today," said 2022 Masters winner Scheffler. It marked the first time the top player in the rankings had carded a six over or higher at the PGA Championship since Greg Norman in 1987. It marks Mickelson's return to the PGA Championship for the first time since 2021 when, aged 50, he defied the odds to become the oldest major winner in history.
