More than half of non-retired US adults (53%) overall said they expect they will need to use Social Security to pay for necessary expenses, according to a new survey from Bankrate. Social Security benefits only replace a portion of Americans’ pre-retirement income. Indeed, only 31% of the non-retired adults surveyed said they are not planning to rely on Social Security benefits in retirement, with just 14% saying they will “not (be) at all” reliant on them. Their “normal retirement age” is 67 for the purposes of collecting Social Security benefits.

A Dallas anesthesiologist was sentenced to 190 years in federal prison in a case where he was convicted of injecting drugs into IV bags, leading to at least one death. He was sentenced in federal court Wednesday to a total of 2,280 months, which the judge ordered to be served consecutively. Doctors began to suspect an issue with the IV bags in August 2022, after a 18-year-old patient’s condition became critical during a routine sinus surgery, prosecutors said. A homeless Florida man was arrested Wednesday and charged with plotting to bomb the New York Stock Exchange to force a "reboot" or "reset" of the U.S. government, according to a criminal complaint. WASHINGTON — Members of the House Ethics Committee will meet behind closed doors Wednesday afternoon to discuss whether to publicly release a report detailing their sweeping investigation into former Rep. Matt Gaetz, President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for attorney general. Several Republicans and Democrats in the Senate have said they want to review the House report before a Judiciary Committee confirmation hearing for Gaetz next year. She argued that there is precedent for the Ethics Committee to publish reports after members of Congress have resigned. If the committee declines to make the Gaetz report public, any House member can try to force a vote to release it. In September 1996, House Democrats tried to force the Ethics Committee to release a report from an outside counsel about its investigation of then-Speaker Newt Gingrich, R-Ga.
