In 2020, the US revoked visas for more than 1,000 Chinese students and researchers deemed security risks. Indians have become the biggest group of international students in the U.S., surpassing Chinese students this year for the first time in 15 years. New data released by the State Department in conjunction with the Institute of International Education shows that there are now 331,602 Indian international students in the U.S. (a 23% growth from last academic year), compared with 277,398 Chinese international students (a 4.2% decline). South Korea, Canada and Taiwan follow distantly as the next most common countries of origin for international students, with numbers all well under 50,000. Long the most populous at U.S. colleges and universities, Chinese international students have been falling in number every year since the pandemic. Up until Monday, the 2025-26 FAFSA was only available to limited groups of students in a series of beta tests that began on Oct. 1. Now, the form is open to all and the Department of Education has said it will be out of testing entirely by Nov. 22 — which puts the official launch ahead of schedule. This year, the plan was to be available to all students and contributors on or before Dec. 1. Students who submit a form during this final "expanded beta" phase before Nov. 22 will not need to submit a subsequent 2025–26 FAFSA form, the Education Department said.

Twelve students at Salisbury University in Maryland have been charged with hate crimes after they allegedly targeted a man over his sexual preferences by inviting him to an off-campus apartment where they beat him and used derogatory names, police said. The students, aged 18 to 21, have been charged with first-degree assault, false imprisonment, reckless endangerment and associated hate crime charges, the Salisbury Police Department said in a news release Thursday. Police said they were contacted by the Salisbury University police department on Oct. 31 about an assault that allegedly occurred in an off-campus apartment complex for college-aged students. Salisbury University President Carolyn Ringer Lepre wrote on X that the students arrested have been placed on suspension, which includes being restricted from campus and barred from academic coursework. “It’s very unfortunate that Salisbury University has jumped to conclusions by suspending these young men before there has been any findings related to this incident,” he said.
