Leah found out she was five weeks pregnant on the same day that the Arizona Supreme Court upheld an 1864 law banning nearly all abortions in the state. The law is not expected to take effect until June, but Leah, 29, worried that the state’s abortion clinics might be overwhelmed by an influx of patients or shut down abruptly. And she could not afford to take time off from her job installing bathroom showers to travel to another state for the procedure. “I might have taken a couple more weeks” to consider her options, she said. “But I kind of felt like my hands were tied.”

Andreas "Andy" Von Bechtolsheim, co-founder of Arista Networks Inc., speaks during a Bloomberg West television interview in San Francisco, California, U.S., on Thursday, May 2, 2013. Andy Bechtolsheim, the co-founder of Sun Microsystems and Arista Networks , has reached a settlement with the SEC on insider trading charges that will cost him close to $1 million and bars him from serving as a public company officer or director for five years. Cisco announced its agreement to buy networking company Acacia for $70 per share in a $2.6 billion deal, driving Acacia's stock up 35%. "While the SEC announcement did not involve any trading in Arista securities, Arista takes compliance to the company's code of conduct and insider trading policy seriously," an Arista spokesperson told CNBC in an email. Bechtolsheim, who lives in Incline Village, Nevada, co-founded Arista in 2004 and took the company public a decade later.

PUEBLA, Mexico (AP) — A four-year-old giraffe named Benito arrived Tuesday at his new home in a large animal park in central Mexico. The 7.5-acre (3-hectare) enclosure at the Africam Safari park in central Puebla state already holds seven giraffes, including three females. At the Africam park, Benito will start eating leaves from the acacia tree, one of the favorite foods of giraffes in their native habitat in Africa. The trip to the Africam Safari park, which started late Sunday, took around 30 hours, less than originally expected. At the Africam Safari park, the giraffes live in a much larger space that more closely resembles their natural habitat.

Some posts on social media in the wake of the fires on the Hawaiian island of Maui, however, suggested that the fact some trees had remained standing showed proof that the fires were somehow engineered or steered to intentionally burn homes and vehicles, leaving trees unscathed. Reuters photographs and satellite imagery of the Lahaina Banyan Court area produced by Maxar Technologies shows buildings, vehicles and trees damaged following the fires (shorturl.at/bpsTX), (here). Other trees were more heavily damaged, but remained standing, Reuters pictures show (here), (here). Regardless, the fact that some trees could remain standing or were less damaged than cars or buildings during a fire is not abnormal. Trees sometimes survive severe damage during fires due to factors including their water content and the ways a fire spreads.

Acquire Licensing RightsNEW YORK, Aug 16 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Intel (INTC.O) can thank China later. The chipmaker on Wednesday terminated its $5.4 billion acquisition of Tower Semiconductor (TSEM.TA), after failing to secure approval from the country’s State Administration for Market Regulation. Beijing’s trustbusters are providing a helpful escape route from the intensifying technology trade war. Reuters GraphicsAdding Tower would have helped Intel boss Pat Gelsinger with his strategic pivot to making semiconductors designed by others. Tower uses old technology, however, while Intel’s new customers, including the U.S. Department of Defense and Qualcomm, want cutting-edge fabrication.

Starboard Value's Jeffrey Smith has called artificial intelligence "an enormous opportunity," and there are hints of his enthusiasm in his latest, quarterly 13F filing to SEC. The activist investor drastically increased his stake in Wix.com , making it his ninth-biggest holding at the end of June. The hedge fund manager said there's more room for Salesforce to grow and the stock can rally another 30% on the back of the AI boom. Nine years later he spun out his New York-based hedge fund and became the CEO. The hedge fund manager also added a relatively small stake in British life science company Abcam PLC last quarter.

The fighting in Sudan has frozen trade of raw gum arabic both within the country and across its borders. Photo: ashraf shazly/Agence France-Presse/Getty ImagesThe conflict in Sudan has disrupted the supply of a little-known but crucial ingredient in soft drinks, chocolate bars, red wine and many other products, sparking concerns over shortages later in the year. The deadly power struggle between the East African nation’s top generals has claimed over 500 lives, left thousands injured and displaced many more. A lesser consequence of the fighting has been to choke the supply of gum arabic—80% of which is produced by Sudan’s acacia trees.
Cloetta AB, (CLOEb.ST) a Swedish confectioner which makes Lakerol lozenges that use gum arabic, has "ample" stock of the ingredient, a spokesperson said in an email. Global production of gum arabic is about 120,000 tonnes a year, worth $1.1 billion, according to estimates cited by Kerry Group. "Both buyers and sellers are clueless on when things will normalise.”Alwaleed Ali, who owns AGP Innovations Co Ltd, a gum arabic exporting business, said his customers are looking for alternative countries to source gum arabic. It accounts for the livelihoods of thousands of people and the more expensive variety can cost about $3,000 a tonne, according to Gum Sudan. There is a poorer quality, cheaper gum from outside of Sudan, but the preferred ingredient is only found in acacia trees in Sudan, South Sudan and Chad, Alnoor said.
Cloud shadows darkened sections of the leafless rim and the tan crater floor. A silvery green lake spread out on the left, and a patch of emerald woodlands near a stream stretched out on the right. In the rainy seasons, the expansive floor is lush and teeming with animals, including massive herds of migrating wildebeests. And because nearly all of the inhabitants are herbivores, we saw no chasing and fleeing. Instead, the wildebeests milled about or rested in acacia shade, and the zebras did a lot of standing around, motionless, like they were trying to remember something they’d just forgotten.

Then just days later, a gunman entered the city’s sole LGBTQ dance club, killing five people and injuring 19 others. Colorado Springs has long been considered a stronghold of evangelism, an identity of Christianity that has a history of opposing LGBTQ equality. The city has very few spaces where its LGBTQ people say they feel a sense of freedom and acceptance. Christopher Aaby, 39, moved to Colorado Springs when he was about 6. Jimmy Gomez-Beisch, 40, a gay burlesque dancer who was born and raised in Colorado Springs, struck a more hopeful tone for the community’s future.
Parker Grey stopped going to the LGBTQ nightclub Club Q about a year and half ago “because of the growing hatred for our community that started in” Colorado Springs, Colorado. While no motive in the shooting has been disclosed by authorities, the violence comes amid heightened tensions for the LGBTQ community. The movement that advocated for that amendment started in Colorado Springs, they said. "I don’t know that we ever believe that we’ve fully grown out of that," Smith, 32, a longtime Colorado Springs resident, said. Most recently, in Colorado Springs, a transgender girl was kicked out of the homecoming dance because she wore a dress, Smith added.
